QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH, the ceremony of Afternoon Tea has a rich and fl avoursome history. This delectable

ritual originated in the 1800s when Queen Victoria’s friend Anna Maria Russell,

Duchess of Bedford, complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the

late afternoon, and wanted something small to satisfy her hunger.

The Duchess requested a small meal of bread with butter and petites like biscuits, cakes and other niceties be brought to her boudoir. Anna began

inviting her society friends to her dressing room to share in the

meal. When The Queen learnt of this activity, she instantly

loved the idea. Victoria was renowned for

having a very sweet tooth

and kept the confectionery cooks very busy. She particularly enjoyed having light cake with buttercream and fresh raspberries – later known as Victoria Sponge Cake – to accompany her pot of tea.

The tradition of Afternoon Tea was born, and by the late 1840s The Queen was daily hosting tea parties – always ending before 7pm to allow time to change and be ready for dinner at 9. This leisure activity for the wealthy quickly moved down the ranks to the working class who adopted an evening meal of ‘family tea’.

Afternoon Tea is traditionally celebrated between 3 and 5pm, served from silver teapots into fi ne bone china teacups set on low tables.
