• What comes to mind when you hear the word Renaissance?

• Definition: • a period of European history• from about 1300 – 1600 CE • Where a renewed interest in culture led to
changes – art, – Learning – views of the world.
RENAISSANCE
• So what?• The Renaissance was a time of tremendous int
ellectual growth throughout Europe. Artists, scientists, writers and mathematicians made advances in their respective fields that left an indelible mark on history.

• …is the French word for REBIRTH…
• Is rebirth a good term for this period in history?
PRE - RENAISSANCE
• Middle Ages (500-1500 CE) – Concern with the church
and religion– How do I get to heaven?
– Black Death (plague) • killed 1/3 • scary and dangerous. • people turned to God and the
church… why?

• Europe emerged from Middle Ages very strong..– Financial, artistic and
scientific growth.
What changed?
• Art and architecture– New materials, subjects and techniques• Oil paints• Perspective• Humanistic
What changed?
• Innovations in navigation and cartography – New trade routes– led explorers to sources of exotic foods, spices,
silks, gold and silver. – Slaves?
What changed?
• Significant inventions and advancements – mathematics, machinery, medicine, astronomy
and physics.

• What is humanism?
• How does this differ from what was going on the Middle Ages?
