Reminder Yass Public School now has a student who is allergic to all nuts and is in danger of having
an anaphylactic reaction. Parents are all encouraged to ensure that no foods that
contain nuts (eg peanut butter and Nutella) are packed in lunch boxes or brought in for
class parties or Birthdays. All students are taught not to share foods at school.
Please reinforce this important health message at home.
Term 4 Calendar of upcoming events is available on the website.
University Awards.
Newsletter Our fortnightly newsletter is available on our Website at www.yass-p.schools.nsw.edu.au
and is emailed to all our students and families who have requested an emailed copy. If
you would like an electronic copy sent to you but we do not have your email, email the
school at [email protected] with your email address and we will then email
you a copy.
Term 4 paper copies of our Newsletter will only be sent home if families specifically
request a hard copy. Please help us reduce our paper consumption.
Sincere thanks to Amanda Grieves who has very generously made, installed and donated
new blinds for the Laidlaw Street office windows of the Kindergarten building. Together
with the newly painted exterior, it has made a wonderful difference to the street frontage
of our school.
Yesterday we welcomed our new Kindergarten students to an activity afternoon. It was
wonderful to see so many eager young children, ready to start their schooling. Thank you
to Therese Marinan and other P&C representatives for providing afternoon tea and
welcoming our new parents.
Today Mrs F. and several of our Primary students attended a 3 on 3 Vibe basketball
competition in Goulburn. I’m looking forward to hearing how their day went.
Finally, please contact the school if you do not intend to return in 2012 or you will be
returning later than the first day of term (Monday 30 January). If you know of families
who plan to enrol next year, please encourage them to contact the school.
At this stage we cannot be sure if we will have 8 or 9 classes- every student counts!

School Facilities Standards Review – Online Survey
The School Facilities Standards (SFS) outline how school facilities are designed and built.
A review of these Standards was announced by the Minister on 13 July 2011.
The objective of the Review is to ascertain whether the SFS are still appropriate given
changes in the delivery of education, advances in technology and community
expectations, and also to ensure that the Standards support the delivery of high quality
education programs and enhance the learning and teaching environment into the future.
In order to allow members of the wider school community to have an opportunity to have
their say, online surveys are being launched on 28 October and will close 28 November,
2011. Separate surveys have been developed for Staff, Students and Parents.
Parents and Students are encouraged to complete online surveys which can be accessed
through:

Author Visit
On the 9th of November year 5 students participated in an author workshop at Berinba
Public School. The author, Jenni Mawter, had travelled all the way from Sydney to teach
us many different writing techniques.
The first technique she taught us was speed writing. In this technique you are required to
keep writing for 2 whole minutes non stop. When you have completed this you choose a
word, phrase or sentence that you like and elaborate on it.
She also taught us that unusual is more interesting. The first line in any story is the most
important because it grabs the reader’s attention and makes them want to keep reading.
She told us if your plot is unusual it is a lot better because it isn’t repetitive and is more
interesting.
She was very generous and gave us all a writing goody bag which included a bookmark,
pen, eraser and a notepad. Jenni had also given us a book of her own called Team Dream.
This experience had inspired many Yass Public students to become writers, illustrators
and many different jobs in the writing industry.

FOCUS CLASS. K/1B
K/1 B has had an exciting and busy start to the term. We visited the Canberra Zoo and Aquarium where students got to hold a snake and feed the emus. Then it was practise, practise, practise to make sure we were ready for our class performance of ‘The Paper Bag Princess.’ All students performed beautifully on the day and lots of fun was had during rehearsals. Last week we saw a Kids Alive do the Five performance where we all learnt the importance of swim safety. In class we have been learning about Workers in the Community, writing response texts, and experimenting with new techniques to create some interesting artwork. Writing by K/1 B On Friday I went to the Zoo and Aquarium and I saw some penguins. All of the penguins were trying to swim. – Caleb S. We went to the zoo on Friday. I went to see the penguins. The zoo was fun because I got to hold the snake. – Jake M. On Friday K/1 B went to the Zoo and Aquarium. I liked the meerkats the best because they kept twitching their heads. I saw the tigers too. They were lazy. – Talia H. On Friday I went to the zoo. I saw a snow leopard and a shark. I was scared of the shark. – Charlie H. Last week on Friday everyone in kindergarten to year 2 went to the zoo. I loved the white lions. I thought the penguins were cute too. – Ariella M.

Nutrition at school.
Education at school takes many forms and education about Nutrition is one
area that we actively promote. It is a concern that many children are coming to
school without lunch or replacing lunch with unhealthy snacks: such as chips
or twisties. If your older child is packing their own lunch each day I encourage
parents to check what they are bringing to school. It is a parent’s
responsibility to make sure that your child has sufficient nutrition throughout
the day.
