T here are those men who pass through your life that leave a lasting impact on your heart and on your memory. One of those men was A.A. Bailey, an in- terim pastor that I worked with in the 90’s. To my knowledge, he is still making his home in Gastonia, after his wife of 67 years passed in 2010. He was her fulltime caregiver while serving in churches after his retirement. He was the ‘watermelon man,’ who pulled in the church lot with a pickup truck load full of watermelons for the church’s fel- lowship night, watermelons that he had grown in his own gar- den, four or five different kinds, and he proceeded to wax eloquent about each one and how they grow and the difference in flavor and color. He was the furniture man. You can walk into any number of the churches that he served in Gaston County through the years and find a piece of furniture that he had hand- crafted in his woodworking shop (which I’m sure must have sat somewhere alongside his water- melon garden!) He was the short order chef who rose early in the morning to go and help his son cook breakfast at the old CD Grocery in West Gastonia. After scram- bling dozens of eggs, flipping sausage and frying bacon for about 3 ½ to 4 hours, he’d show up in the Charlotte hos- pitals before 10, dressed in coat and tie, sharp and ready for a busy day of visiting our church members. He was the Greek scholar who could quote a verse in the Greek, translate, and expound on it with- out ever looking down at his notes. He was the ‘mind like a steel trap’ guy who, having never met my wife, had apparently picked up her name in an early conversation with me or with someone, and walked up to her and called her by name the first time they ever came face to face. Why do I tell you about A.A. Bailey? On his first Sunday morning in our pulpit, it must have been Memorial Day weekend, his first words were this World War 1 poem. I had never heard the poem before that day, and I have not forgotten it since. He didn’t read it, didn’t scramble in his Bible to find it, did- n’t have words on a screen, he just stood and quoted it. Men like A.A. Bailey don’t come along every day, but when they do, they leave a lasting impact and a lasting legacy. For Your Information... ON MEMBERSHIP

From the time Woodlawn began in 1960 until today, there have

been many names that have remained on our membership

records of individuals that have moved away, joined other

churches without notifying the church clerk, or have not attended

in many years.

Article I, Section 5, of our church bylaws states the following:

“Members of this Church who are physically and financially

able but who do not choose to attend or support the Church for a

period of five years or more, shall be automatically removed

from the Church Membership.”

In an attempt to maintain updated and accurate membership

records, notifications are being sent to members subject to

removal per the bylaws, providing a period of thirty days for

them to notify the church if they wish to retain church

membership at WBC.

Based on this information, the membership record will be

updated June 1, 2015.

FROM THE TRUSTEES

The Trustees would like to ask the Woodlawn family to join them

in prayer for our 48 acre tract of land near the interstate to sell.

Signs are being placed on the property to make the public aware

that the land is for sale. Proceeds from the sale of this property

would enable us to eliminate our indebtedness, which is part of

our current church budget.

FROM THE CONSTITUTION & BYLAWS COMMITTEE

The Constitution and Bylaws Committee distributed to the

church a recommended addition to our bylaws entitled:

“Marriage and Human Sexuality.” This addition to the bylaws

addresses our Biblical view of traditional family values, and our

policy as a church not to endorse same sex marriage. Please pick

up a copy of this recommendation in the foyer of the Worship

Center (or on the table in the Christian Life Center). This

recommendation will be voted on during our regular church

conference on Sunday morning, June 14th.

In Search of... In “A” Building on Sunday morning, Emily Yount had a missions

table set up in the hallway. There was a “display” necklace from

her travels on the table that is missing. She would very much like

to have it back since it is a memory from her trip. If you know

anything about it, or have it, please return it to the office or to

John Scruggs Sunday School Class room.
