Attracting Jobs to the UK

Central Government tries to attract jobs to the UK. This helps to reduce poverty, as it reduces unemployment. Schemes to help areas of unemployment are called Regional Assistance. In Scotland, these can be through:

• Scottish Enterprise• Scottish Development International

• Aims to help existing businesses get bigger, help new businesses start up, attract foreign investment and improve skills of workforce.

• Ways to achieve this include giving grants or loans to new companies and giving companies exemption from paying certain taxes if set up in ‘blackspot’ areas.

Scottish Development

International Specifically tries to encourage foreign companies to come to Scotland.

Eg. Markets Scotland abroad as a good place for industry and provides incentives (grants, loans etc).

Modern Apprenticeships

•The Modern Apprenticeships programme recruits and trains the technicians and supervisors of the future.

• It is open to anyone aged 16 and above

•Modern Apprenticeships are designed by employers because employers are best placed to know the skills and attributes required in their employees.

•As a Modern Apprentice, you are employed from day one and can train in a whole range of jobs at craft, technician and even trainee management level. Your training will equip you with the skills to meet the future needs of your chosen industry.

SKILLSEEKERS Employed SkillseekersAs an employed Skillseeker you will be paid the usual rate for the job by your employer. Your training could take place at work or elsewhere (e.g. college or a training centre), or it could be a mixture of both. 

Non-employed SkillseekersNon-employed trainees are currently paid a minimum of £55 per week.Your training must involve a named employer.  Wherever you're based, you'll have the chance to improve your job hunting skills and get extra help with things like going for interviews, letter writing, literacy, numeracy and confidence building.Taking part in Skillseekers as a non-employed trainee will increase your chances of getting a job. You will have the opportunity to gain work experience, improve your qualifications, develop new skills and get references.

National Minimum Wage

Current NMW ratesThere are different levels of NMW, depending on your age and whether you are an apprentice. The current rates are:£5.93 - the main rate for workers aged 21 and over  £4.92 - the 18-20 rate £3.64 - the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 £2.50 - the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Free Nursery Places

• All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free nursery education for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age. This frees up parents to look for work.

Jobcentre Plus

• Jobcentre plus helps lone parents find employment. Helps to provide an action plan to get back into work and advice on childcare once in work. Also arranges a work trial to see if the job suits their routine.

In Work Credit

• Benefits when in work. Many lone parents will be eligible for In Work Credit, which is worth £40 a week (£60 in London), tax-free, on top of your salary.

Jobseekers Allowance

• JSA allowance is more flexible for lone parents. Normally claiming JSA means that you are available to work straightaway. For lone parents claiming this you are given more time- you are given 28 days before you need to start work. You can also arrange the hours that you are available to work.
