1st C O M M A N D M E N TALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.

This is the most important firearm safety rule. A safe direction is one in which an acci-dental discharge will not cause injury to yourself or others. Never allow your firearm topoint at anything you don't intend to shoot. Be especially careful when you're loading orunloading. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. And make it a habit to know wherethe muzzle is pointed at all times, even when your firearm is un-loaded. No one will beinjured by an accidental discharge if you keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction.It's as simple as that.

Load your firearm only when you're in the field or on the target range and ready to fire. Never let a loaded firearmout of your sight or out of your hands. Unload it as soon as you're finished shooting - before you bring it intoyour car, camp or home. Remember, unloading your firearm means unloading it completely, so there is no ammu-nition in the chamber or in the magazine. Before handling a firearm or passing it to someone else, visually checkthe chamber, receiver and magazine to be certain they do not contain ammunition. Always keep the firearm'saction open when not in use. Never assume a firearm is unloaded even if you were the last person to use it. Alwayscheck for yourself.

Safety is Critical to Performance.A superbly crafted firearm is only as good as the hands that hold it. You can never be too careful. Shooting acci-dents are often caused by careless oversights such as failing to control the direction of the muzzle, failing to fullyengage the safety, leaving ammunition in the chamber or using improper loads. These oversights can result in thedestruction of life, limb or property. There's no calling back a bullet once it's been fired, so it's critical that youknow the principles of safe firearm handling and storage before you ever take your new Remington firearm outof the box.

The proper use and performance of your firearm depends on correct assembly and maintenance, so it's criticalthat you familiarize yourself with the information in this instruction book. Even if you're a veteran shooter witha collection of Remington firearms, take the time to read this literature. Not all firearms are the same.That meansthe first step in safe handling is to learn the features and requirements of your new Remington.

• Let common sense rule when you carry a loaded firearm. If you're in a situation thatcould risk accidental discharge - such as crossing a fence, wading through a stream orclimbing a tree - always unload your firearm. Never pull or push a loaded firearmtoward yourself or another person. Never carry a loaded firearm in a scabbard, detachedholster or gun case.

• Certain firearms (including some Remington® rifles and shotguns) are equipped withinternal security devices to prevent unauthorized use. In addition, some firearms own-ers use external devices, such as cable locks and trigger blocks, for the same purpose.Even if you use such a device, you should still keep your firearm unloaded when storedor not in use. And using internal or external devices cannot substitute, however, forsecuring your firearms and ammunition in a separate, locked location.

• Safe storage of firearms is just as critical as safe handling. Never store firearms loaded. Be sure to keep yourfirearms in a secure place where unauthorized persons cannot get their hands on them without your knowl-edge.

• Take special care if there are children around. Children are fascinated by firearms. It's a natural curiosity thatcan have tragic consequences when not properly supervised. Store your firearms in a locked gun safe or someother location that physically bars a child from gaining access.

• Ammunition should be stored and locked in a location separate from your firearm. Never leave an unsecuredfirearm or ammunition in a closet, dresser drawer or under the bed. Remember, it is your responsibility to makesure that children and others unfamiliar with firearms cannot get access to your firearm and ammunition.

3rd C O M M A N D M E N TDON'T RELY ON YOUR FIREARM'S SAFETY

Treat every Firearm as if it can fire at any time, whether or not there's pressure on the trigger. Your firearm hasbeen carefully designed to maximize performance and safety. However, because a firearm's safety is a mechanicaldevice, it could fail.

Human error is a more likely reason for a firearm safety to fail. By mistake, you may think the safety is on when itreally isn't. Or the safety may have been disengaged without your knowledge. Or you could think your firearm isunloaded when there's actually a cartridge or shell in it. A mechanical safety is not a substitute for common sense.It's merely a supplement to your proper handling of a firearm.

Never touch the trigger on a firearm until you are ready to shoot. Keep your fingers away from the trigger whenyou're loading or unloading. And don't pull the trigger when the safety is engaged or positioned between safe andfire.

Before using your firearm, read this instruction book to understand the exact location and operation of yourfirearm's safety. Even when the safety is on, maintain control of your loaded firearm and control the direction ofthe muzzle. In other words, don't rely on your safety to justify careless handling. If your firearm's internal mecha-nisms are broken or have been altered, your firearm may fire even when the safety is on. Remember, you and yoursafe firearm handling practices are your firearm's best safety.

4th C O M M A N D M E N TBE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND IT.

You can't stop a shot in mid-air, so never fire unless you knowexactly where your shot is going and what it will strike. Neverfire at a sound, a movement or a patch of color. A hunter in

camouflage can easily be mistaken for a target by an impulsiveshooter. Before you pull the trigger be absolutely sure of your target and

what's behind it. Make sure the shot has a backstop such as a hillside or densematerial like sand. Remember, bullets can travel great distances with tremendous

velocity. Know how far your shot will go if you miss your target or the bullet ricochets.

5th C O M M A N D M E N TUSE PROPER AMMUNITION

Every firearm is designed to use a certain caliber or gauge of ammunition.Using the wrong ammunition,mixing ammu-nition or using improperly reloaded ammunition can cause serious personal injury or death.And it only takes one car-tridge or shotshell of the incorrect caliber or gauge, or which has been improperly reloaded, to destroy your firearm.It's your responsibility to make sure the ammunition you use exactly matches the caliber or gauge of your firearm.Referto this instruction book to find out the specific requirements of your firearm. Always read and heed the instructionson ammunition boxes.

Confusing shells or cartridges can cause serious personal injury or death and destroy your firearm. Examine your shellsor cartridges closely and use only the precise caliber or gauge for your specific firearm. For example, suppose you acci-dentally loaded a 20 ga. shell into a 12 ga. shotgun. Because the 20 ga. shell is too small for the chamber, the 20 ga.shell could travel down the barrel and get lodged in the bore. If you then loaded a standard 12 ga. shell behind it andfired, the 12 ga. shot will slam into the lodged 20 ga. shell and may cause the barrel to explode right in your hand.Thisis commonly called a 12/20 burst, and it can kill you.

Check all ammunition before you load it to make sure it matches your firearm's requirements. Every Remington® car-tridge and shell is head-stamped with its caliber or gauge for easy identification. Likewise, you'll find the caliber orgauge of your new Remington firearm imprinted on the barrel.

Reloading Requires Extra Diligence.If you're an ammunition reloader, you are responsible for personally assuring that the loads and components of yourreloaded ammunition meet your firearm's factory-tested standards. Never use ammunition, which has been reloadedby someone else!

Many shooters handload as a hobby or to save money on commercial, factory-made ammunition. However, it requires athorough knowledge of reloading procedures and a deep respect for the explosive potential of gunpowder.

Firearms are designed, manufactured and proof-tested to standards based on factory-loaded ammunition. Handloadedor reloaded ammunition that deviates, either intentionally or accidentally, from load or component recommendationscan be very dangerous.

Reloaders must observe all possible safety precautions and practices related to the proper handling of explosives.Whether you're a seasoned reloader or just starting out, you should study the subject, watch reloading demonstrationsand talk to experienced reloaders.

The first rule of reloading is to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the components you're using.They'll tell you to follow certain guidelines. Namely:

1. Don't mix or substitute powders or primers.2. Don't use unknown or substandard components.3. Use only suitable components that have been factory-tested by reputable ammunition,

powder and bullet manufacturers.4. Always be sure to use the manufacturer's recommended recipe when reloading.

Not following these guidelines could result in severe injury to yourself or severe damage to your firearm. Dangerously highpressure and explosions can result from an overcharge of powder or other deviations from established reloading guide-lines.Be very careful.The process of reloading exposes you to environmentally hazardous material.Lead,which is knownto cause cancer and birth defects, is the most common substance in bullets and shot. It is important to handle lead bul-lets and shot with extreme care.Work only in a well-ventilated area and always wash your hands after exposure and beforeeating. Never smoke while reloading.

Primers and powders are also highly toxic and flammable. So after reloading be sure to clean up all materials from yourwork area. Don't leave primer or powder spills anywhere on the floor or bench top. Dispose of all waste material inaccordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Finally, when reloading or hand loading concentrate on what you're doing at all times. Do not be distracted by talkingto others, listening to the radio or watching TV while reloading. Never reload after consuming alcoholic beverages ordrugs of any kind. You are working with extremely hazardous materials and you can't risk even a few seconds of dis-traction. Remember, if you reload, you are the ammunition manufacturer and you are responsible for the performanceand safety of your reloaded ammunition.

6th C O M M A N D M E N TIF YOUR FIREARM FAILS TO FIRE WHEN THE TRIGGER IS PULLED, HANDLE WITH CARE.

If for some reason the ammunition doesn't fire when you pull the trigger, stop and remember the 1stCommandment of Firearm Safety - always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Keep your face awayfrom the breech, then put the safety on, carefully open the action, unload the firearm and dispose of the car-tridge safely. Remember that anytime there's a shell in the chamber, your firearm is loaded and ready to use.Even if you tried to shoot and your firearm didn't fire, treat your firearm as if it could still discharge.

7th C O M M A N D M E N T

Your sight and hearing risk injury from shooting and should be protected at alltimes. Wear protective shooting glasses to guard against falling shot, clay targetchips, powder residue, ruptured cartridge cases and even twigs and branches inthe field. Also be sure to wear eye protection when you're disassembling or clean-ing a firearm so that tensioned parts (like springs) and cleaning solvents don'tcome in contact with your eyes. Continued exposure to shooting noise can per-manently damage your hearing. On the range, where shooting volume is the loudest, be sure to use the maxi-mum protection of a headset. Learn to use ear protection at all times.

8th C O M M A N D M E N TBE SURE THE BARREL IS CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SHOOTING.

Before loading your firearm, open the action and make sure there's no ammunition in the chamber or maga-zine. Check the barrel for any obstructions or debris. Even a small amount of snow, mud, excess lubricant orgrease in the bore can dangerously increase pressure and cause the barrel to bulge or burst when firing. Use acleaning rod and patch to wipe away anti-rust compounds or any other residues or obstructions in the barrel.Never try to shoot out an obstruction by loading another shell and firing!

When firing, rely on your instincts. If the noise or recoil of your firearm seems weak, stop everything, unloadyour firearm and be sure nothing is lodged in the barrel. Remember the 12/20 burst? That's what can happenwhen the barrel is obstructed. Always be sure you're using the correct ammunition in your firearm and thatit's free of obstructions.

9th C O M M A N D M E N TDON'T ALTER OR MODIFY YOUR FIREARM AND HAVE IT SERVICED REGULARLY.

Your firearm has been designed to operate according to certain factory specifications. You'll jeopardize yoursafety and that of others around you by attempting to alter its trigger, mechanical safety or other mecha-nisms. So never alter or modify your firearm in any way.

Like any mechanical device, a firearm is subject to wear. It must be maintainedand periodically serviced to assure optimum safety and performance. Only aqualified service facility should service, repair or modify your Remingtonfirearm. Consult your instruction book for instructions on how to send yourfirearm to the factory or for the location of the nearest Remington authorizedrepair station.

Proper cleaning and lubrication are also important to firearm maintenance andare necessary to assure accuracy, safety and reliability. Before cleaning, alwaysmake sure that your firearm is completely unloaded. And always clean the

barrel from the chamber end to the muzzle when possible.

Make it a practice to clean your bore every time you're going to shoot. Be sure to clean your entire firearm beforeand after long-term storage and no less than once a year. It's also important to clean your firearm whenever it'sbeen exposed to adverse conditions such as rain, dirt, mud, snow, sleet or saltwater.

ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND EAR PROTECTION WHEN SHOOTING.

For safe and dependable operation of your firearm, all parts of your firearm must be properly cleaned andlubricated. Periodically inspect the internal workings of your firearm to be sure they're clean and free of rust,unwanted dirt and debris.

Use recommended lubricants on your firearm and do not over-lubricate. Excessive use of a non-recommendedlubricant could adversely affect the function and safe operation of your firearm. Remember, you are responsiblefor the proper care and maintenance of your firearm. Failure to properly maintain your firearm cannot onlydamage or ruin your firearm, it can expose you and others to unnecessary risks of personal injury or death.

10th C O M M A N D M E N TLEARN THE MECHANICS AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUR FIREARM.

Not all firearms are alike. They have different mechanical characteristics that dictate how you should carry and han-dle them. Anyone who plans to use a firearm should first become totally familiar with the type of firearm it is andthe safe handling procedures for loading, unloading, carrying, shootingand storing it.

Before you even unpack your new Remington firearm, read this instruc-tion book from cover to cover and familiarize yourself with the differentcomponent parts of the firearm.Then read, understand and follow theTen Commandments of Firearm Safety in this manual.

General OperationAll Remington® centerfire bolt actuatedrifles operate similarly. The firearm iscapable of firing multiple shots after eachpull of the trigger and cycle of the bolt. Atthe start of the firing cycle, after the trig-ger has been pulled, and a cartridge hasbeen discharged; the action is unlockedand the firing pin is cocked by rotating thebolt handle upward. As the bolt movesrearward, the spent cartridge case ispulled from the chamber. When the spentcartridge clears the chamber the cartridgeis expelled from the firearm through theejection port. As the bolt moves forwarda new cartridge is stripped from the mag-azine and is placed into the chamber. Thecycle is completed by rotating the boltfully downward, locking the bolt and car-tridge into the firing position.

Serial Number and CartridgeDesignation:The serial number is located on theshooter’s left side of the receiver. SeePicture 2.

Specifications for the correct caliber andcartridge intended for use in your firearmis located on the shooter’s left side of thebarrel. See Picture 3.

WARNING! Only use the specified car-tridge type and caliber of ammunitionspecified for your firearm as designatedon the barrel. Use of an improper car-tridge in your firearm could result in prop-erty damage, personal injury and/ordeath.

The Safety Mechanism:The manual safety mechanism of yourbolt action firearm provides protectionagainst accidental or unintentional dis-charge under normal usage when proper-ly engaged and in good working order.This safety mechanism is not a substitutefor following the rules of safe firearm han-dling. The safety mechanism blocks thetrigger, preventing the trigger from beingpulled when fully engaged in the “S” or"SAFE" position.

The safety mechanism is located on theshooters right towards the rear of thereceiver. To engage the safety mecha-nism, pull the safety lever fully to the reartoward the “S” position until the safetyarm stops. See Picture 4.

Always engage the safety mechanism bymoving the safety lever fully rearwardbefore handling, loading or unloading thefirearm.When you are ready to discharge thefirearm, disengage the Safety Mechanismby pushing the safety arm forward to the“FIRE” position, marked with a “F”. Youhave now disengaged the SafetyMechanism and the firearm is ready toFIRE. See Picture 5.Do not touch the trigger while moving thesafety mechanism. Your fingers and allother objects should be kept outside of thetrigger guard and away from the trigger untilyou are actually ready to discharge thefirearm.Never attempt to pull the trigger when theSafety Mechanism is activated in the "S”or “SAFE” position.

WARNING! The firearm will dischargewhen the trigger is pulled and the safetymechanism is OFF or in the "F” or“FIRE" position. Failure to control themuzzle direction of the firearm when it isdischarged may result in property dam-age, personal injury, and/or death.

Even when the safety is engaged in the"S” or “SAFE" position, careless handlingmay cause the firearm to discharge. Seethe “Ten Commandments of FirearmSafety”, on page 2.

WARNING! Do not alter, modify, bypass,or render the safety features of thisfirearm inoperative. Altering the firearm’ssafety may lead to property damage, per-sonal injury and/or death.

The Cocked Indicator:The cocked indicator is a pin located at therear of the bolt plug of the bolt. (SeePicture 5). When the pin is visible or flushwith the end of the bolt plug, the boltassembly is cocked and the firearm isready to be discharged.WARNING! The firearm will dischargewhen the bolt is cocked (Cocked Indicatoris visible), the safety mechanism is disen-gaged or in the “FIRE" position, and thetrigger is pulled. Failure to control themuzzle direction of a firearm when it isdischarged may result in property dam-age, personnel injury, and/or death.

Additional Features:In addition to the manual safety mecha-nism and the trigger release, the Model783 Bolt Action Centerfire Rifles incorpo-rate passive features providing additionalprotection against accidental or uninten-tional discharge under normal usage andin good working order. These passive fea-tures such as the inertia firing pin system,steel alloys and/or their metallurgicaltreatments, the sear, the trigger engage-ments, the trigger release, the breechlock-up system, head space, and the trig-ger guard all work without direct inputfrom the user as long as your firearm iskept clean and in good working order.

Cocked Indicator

The Locking Device:This firearm was originally sold with a key-operated locking device to assist theowner in protecting against unauthorizeduse. These are storage locking devices.The firearm should be completelyunloaded when stored or not in use.These locking devices DO NOT eliminatethe need for safe firearm handling andstorage, including keeping this and everyfirearm unloaded and locked in a secureplace when not in use. Read and followthese and other safety rules in thisinstruction manual. Failure to read, under-stand, and obey these rules can result inserious personal injury or death. See the“Ten Commandments of Firearm Safety”,on page 2.Keep your locking device engaged whenyour firearm is not in use. Keep the keysin a secure place, inaccessible to others.DO NOT leave your keys or any ammuni-tion with your firearm, which should bekept unloaded and locked in a safe place.

The Bolt Assembly:The bolt assembly locks the cartridge intothe chamber, containing the dischargedpressure of the ammunition within thechamber. The bolt assembly is a two piecestriker system, manufactured specificallyfor your firearm to maintain proper headspace (distance between cartridge and thebolt face). The bolt assemblies are notinterchangeable between rifles. To helpensure the bolt assembly and receiversstay paired-up, the bolt assembly will bemarked with the last three digits of thereceiver’s serial number. For your safety,keep your bolt assembly paired-up with itsrespective receiver.Ensure the last three (3) digits of the serialnumber match the numbers stamped onthe bolt. See Picture 7.

WARNING! Only use the original boltassembly with in your firearm. Do Notattempt to insert or use a bolt on anyfirearm which was not purchased withthe firearm. Use of an improper bolt andreceiver combination may cause propertydamage, personnel injury and/or death.

To Install the Bolt Assembly:1. Always keep the firearm pointed in a

safe direction.2. Engage the safety mechanism by mov-

ing the safety arm fully rearward to the“SAFE” or “S" position.

3. Before inserting the bolt assembly intothe receiver, make sure the firing pinassembly is cocked. When cocked, thefiring pin cocking arm will be located inthe small cocked notch. See Picture 8.

4. If the firing pin assembly is NOTcocked (as shown in Picture 9), cockthe assembly by holding the bolt bodysteady while turning the firing pinassembly clockwise until the cockingarm is resting in the small cockednotch as in Picture 8.

5. Before installing the bolt assembly,make sure the bolt head pin isinstalled. See Picture 7.

The Trigger Assembly:Pulling the trigger DISCHARGES thefirearm.The Model 783 bolt action rifles areequipped with custom designedadjustable trigger assembly. The triggerassembly is a single action system whichhas been set at the Remington factory foroptimal trigger pull weight. The factorysettings provide a crisp, clean trigger pullfor superior out-of-the-box accuracy forhunters, plinkers, and general targetshooting. Rifles with trigger pull weightsettings lower than the factory setting areconsidered “Target” firearms, used onlyfor precision competition shooting, underfiring range or bench firing conditions.The Model 783 rifles trigger pull weightcan be adjusted within limits.With safety as our primary concern, thetrigger assembly design requires the userto place their finger squarely over thetrigger release (see Picture 11). Pullingthe trigger from the side or not directlyrearward, may not disengage the triggerrelease. Which will keep the trigger fromstarting the firing sequence.

4. Push the rod completely through thebarrel until the rod can be seen at themuzzle.

5. If an object cannot be easily pushedout of the barrel with a cleaning rod,return the firearm to the factory or toa Remington Authorized RepairCenter.

Cleaning, Lubrication andMaintenanceWARNING! 13. Push the cleaning rod through the bar-rel several times.

14.Remove the brush from the rod andattach a tip with a cleaning patch.

15. Push the cleaning patch through thebore.

16.Repeat steps 11 through 15 severaltimes, using a new cleaning patcheach time until the patch is removedfrom the barrel without fouling residue.

17. Push a clean patch saturated withRem™ Oil through the barrel.

18. Push a clean dry patch through thebarrel to remove excess lubricant.

19. Apply a light application of Rem™ Oilto the outside of the barrel with a softclean cloth.

If the trigger does not fullyreturn to the forward position each time itis released, then your firearm is NOT in asafe operating condition and it must NOTbe used until you have had it repaired bya Remington Authorized Repair Center.Discharging a firearm which does notfunction properly may lead to propertydamage, personal injury and/or death.19.If the trigger completely returns asspecified in step 18, pull and hold thetrigger rearward while using a smallpunch or screwdriver to depress andrelease the sear multiple times. If the sear does not return tothe full upward position without hesitation,then your firearm is NOT in a safe operat-ing condition and it must NOT be used untilyou have had it inspected and repaired bya Remington Authorized Repair Center.Discharging a firearm which does notfunction properly may lead to propertydamage, personal injury and/or death.20.If the sear freely returns to the fullupward position as specified in step19, release the trigger and operate thesafety mechanism from the "FIRE" tothe "SAFE" position multiple times.The safety mechanism must operatefreely. 21. Place the safety in the "S" or "SAFE"position and lightly spray Rem™ Oil onall the external surfaces of the triggerassembly and receiver. Wipe offexcess oil.

To Disassemble the BoltAssembly:1. With the bolt assembly removed from

the firearm, (see “To Remove the BoltAssembly,” on page 10), compress thefiring pin spring by hand or by placingpliers on the firing pin head and boltplug. Picture 20 is shown for refer-ence. The firing pin head is shown inthe uncocked position. If pliers areused be sure to take precautions notto mar the bolt plug.

2. Rotate the bolt plug and firing pinassembly clockwise 1/8th of a turn.See Picture 21.

2. Air dry or use compressed air to thor-oughly dry all components in the boltassembly.

3. Apply a light application of Rem™ Oilto all surfaces of the bolt assembly.

4. If desired, apply grease to the cockingnotch.

To Reassemble Bolt Assembly:1. Slide bolt friction washer onto shaft of

bolt head. See Picture 23.

2. Push the bolt head into the bolt body. .Orient the bolt handle 180 degreesfrom the ejector, as viewed from thefront.Align the bolt head pin and boltbody holes as shown in Picture 24.

WARNING! When the bolt head pin isNOT in the bolt assembly, the firearm isNOT safe to use. Discharging thefirearm without the bolt properly assem-bled with the bolt head pin may lead toproperty damage, serious personnelinjury and/or death to you and others.

3. Insert the bolt head pin through thebolt body and bolt head. If assem-bled correctly, the bolt handle will be180 degrees from the ejector, asviewed from the front. See Picture25.

4. Insert the firing pin assembly in thebolt body, with the firing pin headapproximately 1/8 of a turn clockwisefrom the small cocked notch. SeePicture 26.

5. Compress the bolt plug, then rotate1/8 turn counter-clockwise unit thecocking arm is located in the smallcocked notch. See Picture 27.

To Disassemble theDetachable Magazine (DM):NOTE: For instruction how to remove

the magazine from the firearm, see“To Load the Magazine,” page 12.

WARNING! Use extreme care whenremoving the magazine bottom, as themagazine spring is under compression.failure to wear eye protection may leadto personal injury.

1. Remove the magazine base fromhousing by placing a small flat screwdriver blade between the magazinehousing locking tabs (3) and themagazine base. Gently pry the twocomponents apart. See Picture 28.

2. Remove the magazine base, spring,and follower assembly from maga-zine housing.

3. If the firearm is a .223 or a .222 cal-iber, do not remove the syntheticmagazine insert.

To Clean the Magazine:1. Thoroughly spray, flush and brush all

magazine assembly componentsusing RemTM Action Cleaner.

2. Air dry or use compressed air tothoroughly dry the magazine assem-bly components.

3. Apply a light application of Rem™ Oilto all metal surfaces.

To Reassemble the Magazine:1. Insert the follower/spring assembly

into the magazine housing from thebottom. Orient the follower’s cartridgebias to the shooters left. See Picture29.

2. Place the magazine base on to themagazine spring with the Remington“R” at the front of the magazine box.See Picture 30.

3. Compress the spring with the maga-zine bottom on to the magazine hous-ing until the bottom snaps into place.

4. Ensure the follower moves freely.5. Reassemble if follower does not move

freely without hesitation.

To Reassemble the Barreled/Action to Stock:

1. With the bolt assembly and magazineremoved, place the barrel/action intothe stock.

2. Replace and tighten (clockwise) thetakedown screws with a 9/64 AllenWrench to the following torque speci-fications:Front Screw: 30 to 35 inch poundsRear Screw: 20 to 25 inch pounds.See: Picture 17, on page 17.

5. Push the magazine box into the receiv-er’s magazine well until the latch fullyengages.

6. Ensure the safety is engage by placingthe safety mechanism in the “Safe” or“S" position.

To Function Test the Firearm:When the firearm is fully reassembled, a shortfunction test should be conducted to ensure prop-er operation before loading or discharging thefirearm. If the firearm does not function asdescribed in any part of the Function Test proce-dure, then the firearm should be reassembled andfunction tested again. Do NOT discharge thefirearm. If the firearm fails the Function Test again,DO NOT discharge the firearm. The firearmshould be sent to a Remington AuthorizedRepair Center. See page 26 “How To ObtainService,” for instruction how to find aRemington Authorized repair center nearestyou.

WARNING! Completely unload the firearmbefore Function Testing. Look into the ejec-tion port and visually check the chamber andmagazine to make sure there are no car-tridges in the firearm. Failure to follow theseinstructions may lead to property damage, per-sonal injury and/or death.

1. Always keep the firearm pointed in asafe direction throughout theFunction Testing process.


3. Open the action by raising the bolthandle, then pulling the bolt fullyrearward. The bolt should stop onthe bolt stop at the rear of thestroke.


5. Remove the magazine by disengag-ing the magazine latch while pullingthe magazine from the firearm. SeePicture 13.

6. Slide the bolt forward, then push thebolt handle down, locking the boltinto the firing position.

7. With the safety engaged, pull thetrigger rearward and release. Thefiring pin should not release.

8. Disengage the safety mechanism bymoving the safety arm fully forwardto the “F” or “FIRE” position.

9. Pull the trigger rearward andrelease. The striker (firing pin)should release.

10. Ensure the trigger returns complete-ly to the forward position each timethe trigger is pulled.

11. Cycle the bolt and repeat steps 9and 10 multiple times.

WARNING! If the trigger does not fullyreturn to the forward position each timeit is released, then your firearm is NOTin a safe operating condition and it mustNOT be used until you have it inspectedand the problem corrected by aRemington Authorized Repair Center.Discharging a firearm which does notfunction properly may lead to propertydamage, personal injury and/or death.12. If the trigger and trigger release

completely return as specified insteps 10 and 11, cycle the bolt.

13.With the safety mechanism in the“FIRE” position, pull the trigger with-out touching the trigger release. Thestriker should not release. SeePicture 32.

15. With the safety disengaged, pull andhold the trigger rearward while usinga small punch or screwdriver todepress the sear then releasing mul-tiple times. The sear must return tothe full upward position without hesi-tation. See Picture 33.

WARNING! If the sear does not returnto the full upward position without hesi-tation, then your firearm is NOT in asafe operating condition and must NOTbe used until you have it inspected andthe problem corrected by a RemingtonAuthorized Repair Center. Discharging a

firearm which does not function properlymay lead to property damage, personalinjury and/or death.16. If the sear freely returns to the full

upward position as specified in opera-tion 15, release the trigger and oper-ate the safety from the Fire “F” to theSafe “S” position multiple times. Thesafety must operate freely. The safetyarm must be positioned in the fullSafe “S” or the full Fire “F” position.

17.Repeat steps 15 and 16 multiple time.WARNING! If the safety does NOT freelyreturn to the full Safe “S” or full Fire “F”position after repeating steps 15 thru 16multiple times, then your firearm is NOTin a safe operating condition and it mustNOT be used until you have it inspectedand corrected by a Remington AuthorizedRepair Center. 21. Disengage the safety by placing thesafety mechanism in the “FIRE” or “F”position.

22.Close the action smartly (with force)by moving the bolt assembly fully for-ward quickly. Once fully forward, pushdown on the bolt handle, caming thebolt into the locked position.

23. The striker (firing pin) must Notrelease and the empty magazineshould remain latched in position.

24. To check if striker (firing pin) released,(with the safety mechanism disen-gaged), pull the trigger fully rearward.The stricker (firing pin) shouldrelease.

25.Repeat steps 22 thru 25 multipletimes.

WARNING! If the striker (firing pin) doesNOT remain cocked when the bolt isclosed smartly, the firearm is NOT safe touse. Return the firearm to the factory or
