The God of Small Things

Novel message what the author would like to changeAuthor political activist, now journalistIndia late 60s settingThemes The cast system the untouchables parawans, strata of society - patriarchal family roles of men and women in itGod of lossOnly people who adhere to the society able to survivePossibility of change through communismRahel + Estha twins, one person, information immediately given (joint identities)Rahel (more lively, gregarious) knows Esthas dreams, gets up to open the door and knows that he is there, Chacko uncle is not surprised, Rahel knows about the orange drink lemon drink man (on napastvovao Esthu).Estha quieter, withdrawn, most horrendous things happened to him at the cinema while watching a musical about a family, orange drink lemon drink man incident happened on a family occasion, he doesnt say anything, things change for him fear, starts making plans (escape routes) feels guilt for Sophies death, he has to identify Velutha (only Velutha shows unconditional love to the twins), Estha manipulated by Baby Kochima, has to save his mother and betray his father (Velutha not his biological father) end of Esthas childhood withdraws form the world stops speaking, no jobs, tries to clean himself and walks.Rahel expelled from several schools, does strange things, doesnt fit in, goes to America, marries, but is an absent person (cannot create a meaningful relationship with anyone) marriage falls apart, reunited (no verbal communication) much later Rahel and Estha have 31 years then incest (not to shock the reader, incest a lesser taboo in india) at the end of the novel, quietness and emptiness like a healing process, theyve become one person again.Amu also victim of the society inferior because she is not male, watched how father abuses her mother, she rebels against the family marries the first man she meets her husband prostitutes her, she is afraid he would hurt her children, she knows what will happen if she divorces but does it anyway very brave, she will remain unmarried, no career, look after children no prospects, looks wild everyone a bit afraid, prone to introspection, she is a good mother, makes mistakes but loves children, she loves Velutha because he loves the children, she notices him as a man when he carries one of the children, did not notice him as a man before, he is an untouchable. Velutha irresistible in the novel, physically extremely attractive, linked to nature a life birthmark, looks after his brother caring, political man, intelligent, the last possible joy in the world with him, love scene very delicately and beautifully described, only positive male character.Chacko contrasted to Amu, has the privileges, money invested in his education, loved him more at home, went to study in England, Margaret treated him differently he loved that, he becomes a lazy man and a slob, doesnt do anything, he doesnt make any effort to bring her and daughter back, takes over mothers business when he comes back destroys it, not a good uncle to the twins not supportive, inconsistent and moody, blames twins for Sophie Mols death, banishes them from view, doesnt offer any support, stops his father from beating his mother only positive thing, he is spineless.Mammachi she doesnt want Chacko to love and have any special relationship any other woman, feel threatened by Margaret. Double standards Chackos divorce is ok, Amus divorce is not, Mamachi vise voli Chackovo dete, obsession with who you should love more and who less, very traditional, Oedipus complex, very good businesswoman strange, not supportive towards Amu both beaten by their husbands.Pappachi very envious, not very present in the novel, najvise voli auto koji sam vozi, very resentful and bitter did not receive recognition for a new kind of moth not a beautiful creature, did not let Mammachi play the violin for her to be more important, afraid people would be more important, he wants to shame her in public, no positive relationship with anyone in the story. His moth appears on Rahels heart insecurity.Baby Kochima doesnt stand anyones happiness, she is interested in jewellery, described so well, treated differently when young than her brother, only cares about social status, very lonely, unreturned love, obsessive love for a man who doesnt know that forbidden love (he is a priest), very manipulative, ugly on the outside fat, and ugly on the inside, lives together with a maid, everything barricaded, they sit in the dark. Velutha mouthpiece for authors opinions for the cast system, her of the novel, contrast him with his father (Velutha doesnt accept his place in society) a traditional parawan fully accepts his position doesnt want anything to change, event wants to sacrifice his own son, eternally grateful to Mammachi willing to kill his son for her, Velutha beaten to death policemen dont know how far to go with beating because he is not a man (he is just some creature) they are exercising fear.
