2010 EASTERN ILLINOIS PANTHER VOLLEYBALL • THE KATE PRICE COACHING ERA BEGINS

PITT BLUE & GOLD INVITE REVIEW Last weekend, the Panthers finished non-league tournament play, competing in the six-squad pitt Blud & Gold Invitational. EIU came home with a 2-2 split at the two-day event, sweeping Robert Morris (Penn.) and Saint Francis (Penn.), but dropping a tough five-set affair to Bowling Green and losing in three to #9-Washington.

PANTHERS CLAW BACK TO WIN FIVE-SET THRILLER AT WESTERN This past Monday, the Panthers traveled cross state to face the arch-rival Western Illinois squad, as the Panthers picked up a nice, hard-fought victory in five sets. Down 2-1 in sets, the Panthers countered to win the final two frames for the 19th victory over the Fighting Leathernecks in the Division I seasons. Three Panthers finished with double-digit kill numbers in the win, led by senior Kelsey Orr’s 23 put-a-ways, two shy of tying her career high. She added 16 digs to register her 21st career double-double. Fellow senior Erin Hake earned her own duo-duo behind an 11 kill-dig night, while sophomore middle Alison Berens had a nice night as she chipped in 10 additional kills. Defensively, senior Kylie Cavanah led with 20 ups, and added 17 assists as the starting quarterback in the final two frames, while junior Chrissie Albers dished out 36 assists. Senior Alex Zwettler added 16 ups, starting as the libero in the final two sets. Hake added 11 digs as did freshman Reynae Hutchinson.

THREE PANTHERS TABBED FOR ALL-TOURNAMENT RECOGNITIONS Senior outside hitter Kelsey Orr earned her second consecutive All-Tourney squad honor this past weekend, as she represented the Panthers at the Pitt Blue & Gold Invite. That follows her recent honor at the Michigan State Spartan Invite a week earlier. Both honors are the first in her Panther career. Also picking up their first career tourney kudos this season was senior outside hitter Erin Hake and junior setter Chrissie Albers, who represented the Panthers on the Harvard All-Tournament squad.

TRIP BACK FROM WESTERN ILLINOIS ONE TO REMEMBER Just downing cross-state rival Western Illinois in a five-set thriller this past Monday night would be enough excitement for the Panthers, but the addition of a nearly 10-hour trip back to Charleston only make it that much more memorable. The ride to the western part of Illinois was uneventful until the squad went to board the bus after finishing their pre-match meal at a restaurant in Macomb. At that point, the bus suddenly broke down, requiring immediate attention. Fortunately the bus ran again and the team was able to get to the WIU

campus in time for pre-match warmups and the contest itself. The Panthers then proceeded to stun the record-breaking WIU crowd of over 1,000 with a come-from-behind five-set win, upping the EIU record to 7-5 on the season and 19-12 all-time against the Fighting Leathernecks during the NCAA Division I era. But before the team could get out of town for the trip back, the bus once again failed to continue down the road. That led to many phone calls as the bus company scrambled to get another bus to Macomb. Luckily the bus quit running at a nearby car dealership, which was completely lit and even had wireless internet access for many of the student-athletes to utilize for class purposes. Plus a couple members of the Macomb police department stopped by to check on the situation and gave the players a tour of their squad car, answered various procedural questions and basically kept the players company while waiting for the new bus to arrive. Finally the new bus, which came from Peoria, arrived at 3:30 am and the Panthers eventually returned to Charleston approximately 3.5 hours later.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES OF MOREHEAD STATE First opponent this weekend will be the MOREHEAD STATE squad, which enters Charleston at 8-6 overall and sporting an early 2-0 mark in league play, having already downed the defending OVC champion Jacksonville State team in a four-set match and sweeping Tennessee Tech. Both matches were played in Morehead, however, as the Eagles have yet to win a road contest this season. MOR has four players averaging over two kills per set, with senior right side Holly Evans leading with 147 kills (2.88 kps) off a .335 attack clip and adding 38 total blocks (0.75 bps). Senior Kaitlin Craven and sophomore Ellie Roberson are a close second and third with 134 (2.73 kps) and 126 (2.52 kps) put-a-ways, behind a .176 and .164 attack, respectively for both outside hitters. Craven owns the squad’s top serve, as she has 22 aces under her belt. Sophomore Annie Gruenschlaeger, at 6-4 in

KATE PRICE was promoted to head volleyball coach at Eastern Illinois this past March following a one-year stint as a Panther assistant last season. Price becomes the 10th head coach in EIU volleyball history. Under her assistantship in 2009, Eastern more than doubled the previous season’s win total and captured three consecutive third place finishes in early-season tournament play. A former senior player on the 2007 NCAA National Championship squad at Penn State, Price becomes one of the youngest volleyball coaches to currently run an NCAA Division I squad. Prior to arriving in Charleston in 2009, the Michigan native worked as an assistant at Centenary College for coach Dan Gwitt during the 2008 season. In her four seasons at Penn State, Price competed in a variety of positions, which included playing on the right side attack, as defensive specialist and some libero work. Some of her career awards earned were AVCA Honorable Mention All-Mideast Region, Big Ten ‘Freshman of the Year’, Stanford Invitational ‘Most Valuable Player’, Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team, and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. Not only did Penn State win the 2007 National Championship, but the Nittany Lions also captured the Big Ten championship all four years that she was a member of the squad. “I am very excited for this opportunity,” Price said. “I plan to hit the ground running, because the sky is the limit for the Panther volleyball program.”

EIU RECORD WHEN ...height, obviously owns the top block numbers via 52 total roofs, which also currently leads the OVC. Senior setter Kirstie Brangers runs the Eagle offense via a 10.44 assist per set average and adding 11 aces. Defensively, junior libero Liz Schuler has 256 total ups (5.22 dps), while Brangers is second with 110 digs. Although the Panthers enjoy a 15-11 all-time series advantage over MOR, the Eagles have actually won the last six meetings between the two squads. EIU and Morehead State met just once in 2009, as the home contest at EIU was cancelled and not rescheduled, following the sudden death of Panther women’s basketball assistant coach Jackie Moore, which led to the cancellation of all Eastern athletic events that weekend.

QUICK LOOK AT THE OTHER EASTERN SQUAD EASTERN KENTUCKY will arrive to EIU on Saturday, following a Friday night match at Southeast Missouri. Prior to that contest, the Colonels are 2-9 overall and an even 1-1 in OVC action after defeating TTU, but losing to JSU. Like Morehead State, EKU has yet to win a road match. Freshman Ashley Edmond leads the EKU attack with 133 kills (3.33 kps), while the outside hitter also adds a team-high nine aces and sports the third best block total with 16. Senior Lauren Snyder is also averaging over three kills per set with 98 total put-aways (3.06 kps). Fellow senior Autumn Harms, hitting at a .208 clip, is a close third with 84 total kills (2.10 kps), but also has 20 total blocks. Defensively, long-time libero Abby O’Connor leads with 238 total ups (5.95 dps) and has the second best ace total with seven. Junior middle Hannah Groudle is a presence at the net for the Colonels, with 23 total blocks, including three solo roofs. Newcomer Robyn Hench and senior Kate Hendle both share quarterback duties with 154 and 201 assists, respectively. EIU owns a 16-12 all-time series advantage over the Colonels, but have lost five straight, including a five-set season finale thriller to EKU, with the match played on neutral territory at the University of Evansville campus. The match was rescheduled following the cancellation of the regularly scheduled EIU home match with EKU following the untimely passing of EIU women’s basketball coach Jackie Moore.

MURRAY STATE COMES TO TOWN ON TUESDAY Prior to hosting SIU-Edwardsville in the Racer’s home opener on Saturday, the MURRAY STATE squad is 5-8 overall and 2-1 in OVC action. They previously lost to Austin Peay but countered with wins over Tennessee State and UT Martin. Ashley Nenninger and Becca Lamb are the top two offensive threats for the Racers with 124 (2.95 kps) and 113 (2.63 kps), respectively, prior to facing UTM this past Wednesday evening. Nenninger also sports a team-high 23 blocks, while Jade Guo leads the offensive scheme via 432 total assists (9.82 aps). Other defensive standouts include Wendi Zickfield with 21 total roofs and libero Kayleah Sauer with 201 total ups (4.57). Like against the other two weekend opponents, Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky, the Panthers own a series advantage over the Murray State via an 18-14 lead in the all-time meetings. However, the Racers have won the last eight meetings between the two teams, including scratching past EIU in a five-set thriller on the Panthers’ home court toward the end of the 2009 season.

ORR EARNS HER TWENTY-FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE Following a fine weekend of play at the Pitt Invite and on the road at Western Illinois, senior outside hitter Kelsey Orr was able to record her 19th, 20th and 21st duo-duo for kills-digs. She had 23 kills/10 digs in EIU’s sweep of Robert Morris to begin Pitt tourney play, then followed with a 23 kill/10 dig match in EIU’s tough five-set loss to Bowling Green. The 23 kills was just two shy of her career high of 25. She again nailed 23 kills, adding 16 ups, as EIU pulled out the crucial five-set thriller at WIU. Kelsey’s five double-doubles on the season currently leads all Panthers, while fellow senior Alex Zwettler owns the highest career tally for duos, as she earned her 40th career double-double (15 kills/10 digs), and first this season, in the same five-set match with BGSU.

PANTHER HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS Since joining the OVC back in 1996, the Panthers own an 8-6 mark in home openers. In OVC home openers, however, Eastern’s record is the reverse at 6-8 all-time, including having lost the last four home league matches.

PANTHERS EARN EARLY TOP TEN OVC RANKINGS Five members of the EIU squad continue to solidify themselves as players to watch in the Ohio Valley Conference, as Chrissy Albers, Kylie Cavanah, Kelsey Orr, Brittany Wallace and Alex Zwettler having already placed their names on the Top 10 OVC list for season statistics. Junior setter Albers continues to lead all league quarterbacks, via her 10.66 assists per set average. Also in the Top 10 is back-up setter and current servicing specialist, senior Kylie Cavanah, who sports the sixth best ace average of 0.36 on the year. Following consecutive weekends of nice play, senior Kelsey Orr ranks second for total kills (3.79 kps), and No. 3 for total points scored, via a 4.16 points per set average. Junior libero Brittany Wallace is currently 9th for total digs, as she comes in at the ninth spot (3.29 dps). Senior outside hitter Alex Zwettler rounds out the Panther list with a 10th place ranking for aces (0.30 aps).

VARIOUS 2010 MATCH ACCOLADES (2010Season/Career)

DIETER TIES HER CAREER HIGH BLOCK MARK VERSUS FALCONS Senior middle blocker Jorie Dieter collected nine total roofs in the Panthers’ tough loss to BGSU at last weekend’s Pitt Invite, collecting one solo stuff and eight assisted blocks as EIU out-blocked the Falcons, 14.5 to eight. Meanwhile, Dieter also set a new personal attack mark in EIU’s five-set win at WIU this past Monday, as she committed zero errors and put-a-way eight of her 12 total attacks to register a .667 offensive clip. What makes this mark even more amazing, she was forced to wear a soft brace on her right hand due to a recent slight injury to her thumb.

TEAM-WISE, EIU RANKED IN SIX OF SEVEN OVC TOP FIVE STAT CATEGORIES With their early 7-5 start to the season, the Panthers have positioned themselves into several Top 5 statistical team listings for all OVC squads. For the third straight week, EIU owns the top league mark for blocks with 2.04 roofs per set. Eastern has the third best mark for hitting (.205%), assists (11.95 aps), and kills (12.92). Eastern is currently fourth for opponent hitting % (.205) and fifth for total team aces (1.26 aps). Rounding out the stat numbers, the lone category where the Panthers aren’t ranked in the Top 5 is in total digs (13.13), which places EIU ninth out of the ten total league squads.

BERENS MAKES WESTERN GREEN WITH ENVY The Western Illinois squad actually tried to lure sophomore middle hitter Alison Berens to attend the school during her recruiting choice, even visiting the campus. Instead, she chose EIU and in the process had one of her best matches of her career against the Fighting Leathernecks. She set four new personal bests in the five-set affair, including nailing 10 kills, off 29 total attempts, while her three aces and 15.0 point total also set a new career marks.

PANTHERS PICKED EIGHTH IN OVC PRESEASON POLL After capturing an eighth place finish in 2009, the Panthers have been tabbed to finish in the same spot in 2010 following preseason voting by league head coaches and Sports Information Directors. Morehead State earned 11 first-place votes and are expected to capture the regular-season crown, followed by last season’s winner Jacksonville State with nine first-place votes. Murray State, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech were picked in the upper half of the conference standings, with Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri are just ahead of the Panthers.
