Understanding Dynamic GPU Performance Mode

WiththeRelease280drivers,NVIDIAGPUclockspeedswillincreasemorequicklyinresponsetoincreasedgraphicsdemands.Conversely,withlowergraphicsusetheGPUclockspeedslowsdownmorequickly,conservingasmuchpoweraspossible.

IntheRelease280drivers,someusersreportedanoticeablefluctuationinclockspeedswhileengaginginvarioustasksonthePC.WiththeRelease285drivers,adjustmentshavebeenmadetoreducethesensitivitytolevelssimilartotheR275driver.

OnanSLIsystemwitheachSLIGPUdrivingadisplay,thedisplayconnectedtotheslaveGPUistheprimarydisplay(alsotheSLIfocusdisplay).InordertoswitchtheprimarydisplaytotheoneconnectedtotheotherGPU,themasterandslaveGPUconfigurationmustalsoswitch.InordertoreassignwhichGPUisthemasterandwhichistheslave,thedrivermustbereloaded.Ittheprocessofreloadingthedriverthattakestheadditionaltime.

Understanding the DirectX Version Shown in the NVIDIA System Information Window

TheSystemInformationwindowaccessedbyclickingSystemInformationatthebottomleftcorneroftheNVIDIAControlPanelprovidestechnicalinformationabouttheNVIDIAgraphicscardsanddriverinstalledinthesystem.

ItalsoprovidesinformationabouttheWindowsversionaswellastheDirectXversionthatisinstalled.

However,inordertousetheversionofDirectXreportedintheSystemInformationwindow,theNVIDIAGPUandgraphicsdrivermustalsosupportthatDirectXversion.

Forexample,driverversion197.45andWindowsVista(withavailablepatch)supportDirectX11.ButonlyNVIDIAgraphicscardsbasedontheFermiarchitecturereleasedin2010supportDirectX11.SoyoursystemmusthaveoneofthesecardsinstalledinordertotakeadvantageofDirectX11performance.

Using HDMI Audio with Displays that have a High Native Resolution

TouseHDMIaudiowithsomedisplaysthathaveanativeresolutionhigherthan1920x1080,youmustsetthedisplaytoalowerHDresolution.

SomeHDMIdisplayshaveanativeresolutionthatexceedsthemaximumsupportedHDmode.Forexample,displayswithanativeresolutionof1920x1200exceedthemaximumsupportedHDmodeof1920x1080.

ApplyingthisnativemoderesultsindisplayoverscanwhichcannotberesizedusingtheNVIDIAControlPanelsincethemodeisnotanHDmode.

Toavoidthissituationandprovideabetteruserexperience,thedrivertreatscertainTVssuchastheViewsonicVX2835wmandtheWestinghouseLVM37w3asaDVImonitorwhenapplyingthenativemode.BecausethedriverdoesnottreattheTVasanHDMIinthiscase,theHDMIaudioisnotused.

Using HDMI/DisplayPort Displays that do not Support Audio

SomeHDMI/DisplayPortdisplaysdonotsupportaudio,orhaveissueswithGeForce9seriesandearlier,andGeForceGTX200seriesNVIDIAgraphicscards.

TheNVIDIAdriverattemptstoidentifysuchdisplaysandautomaticallydisablestheaudio.Forexample,theNVIDIAdriverdisablesHMDIaudioforallPhilipsHDMITVs,asthesehavebeenidentifiedashavingissueswithGeForce9seriesandearlier,andGeForceGTX200seriesNVIDIAgraphicscards.

Theremaybecaseswhereeitherthedriverdisablesaudioeventhoughthereisnoproblem,ordoesnotdisabletheaudiowheninfacttheaudiodoesnotwork.Thefollowingsectionsdescribethesesituationsandprovidesguidanceforhandlingthem.

Corrupted video and no audio

TheNVIDIAControlPanelflatpanelscalingcontrolsontheAdjustDesktopSize&PositionpagearenotintendedtobeusedforTVmodes,andnormallythecontrolsarenotavailableforTVorHDTVdisplays.

However,MicrosoftrequiresthatcertainTV/HDTVmodesbeavailableforalldigitaldisplays,includingDVIandHDMI,eveniftheyarenotHDTV.
