an autumn rain. Of
course, the weather at
the beginning of autumn is superb … not too hot
and not too cold … it is
just right.
Scripture bears out the
righteousness of autumn
and its weather as a covering of our Lord’s
faithfulness. Like
jumping in the pile of
those newly fallen
cornucopia of colors enhanced by the musk of
the outdoors and of
timber, you find yourself
enveloped by the
faithfulness of a God who loves us too much to just
leave us alone. The
prophet Jeremiah
throughout his writings
would refer to the cyclical natural wonders like
rains as evidence of a
God who brings ever
present assurance: Let
us fear the Lord our God, who gives autumn and
spring rains in season,
who assures us of the
regular weeks of harvest. Jer. 5:24
Some people miss the wonders of autumn
Be glad, people of Zion,
rejoice in the Lord your
God, for he has given you the autumn rains because
he is faithful. He sends
you abundant showers,
both autumn and spring
rains, as before. Joel 2:23
I am not sure if it is just
because I am a
September baby or
because I have much
experience in living in Ohio … but I love the
autumn … its air, its
smells, its feel, its leaves,
and its
memories. Memories of bonfires and hayrides and
football and hobo dinners
(if you haven’t
experienced this one you
need to let me know). The sights and
sounds and times with
family and friends around
a fire or a football is as
vivid as the colors of leaves on the trees after

because they can only concentrate on the
winter that is around the corner. They dwell
on the distress of past winters and become almost despondent over the forecast for
winter to come.
Don’t miss life’s autumn moments as
directed by our gracious and generous God,
who gives us the present joys of the season
as we await the predetermined joys of the future, a future outlined in a Father’s
faithfulness.
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until
the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer
waits for the land to yield its valuable crop,
patiently waiting for the autumn spring rains. James 5:7
Our Prayer: Make It Rain Lord! Make it Rain!
The slurry walls of lifeAs horrific as 9/11 was, it could’ve been even
worse if not for a 30-year-old engineering feat.
Reaching some 70 feet underground, a 3-foot-
thick concrete structure called a “slurry wall”
surrounded the base of the World Trade Center complex. Designed to prevent the Hudson River
from flooding the basement, this wall prevented
New York’s subway system from flooding and
countless additional people from dying on
September 11, 2001.
A slurry wall is constructed by pouring a thick,
goopy mixture of powdered clay and water into a
deep, narrow trench. The solution coats the
sides, preventing water and soil from collapsing the trench. Pipes are then inserted through the
slurry, and concrete is pumped into the trench,
pushing the slurry up and out. At the WTC, the
concrete formed such a strong wall that even two
airplanes and the falling towers didn’t fracture it. Part of the slurry wall still stands at the 9/11
Memorial site, a symbol of resilience.
Sometimes God uses life’s “slurry” to make us
stronger than we ever thought possible. We might wish something yucky hadn’t happened —
until we discover it was part of what sustained
us, making us resilient and enabling us to rise
out of destruction and death to awe-inspiring new life.

Dear Friends,Thank you for the beautiful
flowers that arrived following my stay at Northside Hospital. They were delivered by the best friends God ever gave anyone (Bill & Marty Snyder). My new pacemaker and I are doing fine. Thanks, too, for the cards and most of all for your prayers. Our congregation might not be the biggest, we may not have programs for this or for that, but when it comes to love and support we can't be beat! With love,
Marty Shinn

Our September Phillips "Ph"amily profile: Cody Opsitnik
William "Cody" Opsitnik is the son of William and Milissa (Shinn) Opsitnik and resides with them on Salem Grange Road in Salem, Ohio. He was born on June 12, 1995. He has one sister, Ali, age
18. His grandparents are Bob and Marty Shinn who also attend Phillips.
Cody graduated from United High School in 2014 and his accomplishments there were: Class President, Band President and National Honor Society Treasurer. His extra curricular activities were
playing in the Marching Band and Concert Band. Cody had the privilege of visiting China in 2013 on
a United school trip. When he returned, he shared his photos with the church while his Mom sang
"What a Wonderful World" and "I Believe" which was very appropriate for his experience.
Cody works, when he can, at Das Dutch House in Columbiana. He works primarily in the Bakery
Department, but also works ringing up customers on the register. He started out as a bus boy,
dishwasher and cook over the two years he has been employed there.
Currently, Cody is continuing his education at Kent State University, Main Campus, in Kent, Ohio. He
resides there and comes home on weekends to attend church, Relay for Life (he is co-captain of
PCC team) events and being with family. His college major and long term goal is to become a high
school math teacher. He is also working on a minor in mathematics and business administration.
While attending the university, Cody is involved with being a tour guide and Student Success Leader, where he is assigned to 18 incoming freshman to guide them with their first year in college. This year
he will be joining a college organization called "Student Ambassadors" where he will meet with the
President of the University to discuss and share opinions of college students.
Most Sunday mornings, you will see Cody in a shirt and tie. As a soon to be math teacher, he will be
wearing shirts and ties everyday, so his goal is to have 180 ties so he can go an entire school year
without wearing the same tie twice. To date, he has collected 90 ties towards his goal before
graduating from KSU. Good Luck, Cody!
Cody's many duties at Phillips are: being responsible for the front church sign, administration of
PCC’s online website and Facebook page and managing the Media center in the back of church. He
also puts up our beautiful Nativity scene in front of church yearly and is an assistant Sunday School
teacher when needed. Cody's favorite story in the Bible is Noah and The Ark. His favorite hymn is any of the old classics. The big family atmosphere at Phillips is what he likes about being a member
here. Cody has a favorite fast food restaurant and that is Arby's. His favorite store he says he can
spend hours shopping in is Staples. Color favorite is Blue.
A few favorite phrases Cody likes are "If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet, how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is
something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person." Mr. Rogers from Mister
Rogers Neighborhood.
Cody is very interesting teenager, who does a lot for our church here and anywhere he is in his life.
Thanks for your story, Cody............... - Submitted by Diana Reiter

The Joy of TeachingWhat an awesome job I’ve got,
to nurture these dear precious tots
and help them know their lives were bought
when Jesus gave his blood and sought
to save the soul of every tot.
What an awesome job I’ve got,
to share the gospel with these tots
and plant in them with every thought
the prize of heaven Jesus brought
to save the soul of every tot.
What an awesome job I’ve got,
to teach against the devil’s plot
and amplify what Jesus taught
and glorify what God has wrought
to save the soul of every tot!

The “body” of a church has
four kinds of bones:
1. The WISHbones are those folks who
spend all their time wishing someone else
would do all the work.
2. The JAWbones are those who do all the talking and very little else.
3. The KNUCKLEbones are those who
knock everything anyone else tries to do.
4. The BACKbones are those who get
under the load and get the work done.
What kind of bone are you?
