Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

A Blessed Easter Octave and Divine Mercy Sunday. One of God’s Greatest Attributes is His Mercy. Today we, as the Universal Church celebrate that very Ocean of His Mercy. Below is some history and facts about the Message of Divine Mercy. I hope you enjoy it. Have a Blessed Week and hope to see you at the special 2:45pm Divine Mercy Holy Hour Today. Fr. Harrigan Pastor St. Pope John Paul II

The Great Mercy Pope Pope John Paul II, both in his teaching and personal life, strove to live and teach the message of Divine Mercy. As the great Mercy Pope, he wrote an encyclical on Divine Mercy: "The Message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me… which I took with me to the See of Peter and which it in a sense forms the image of this Pontificate." In his writings and homilies, he has described Divine Mercy as the answer to the world’s problems and the message of the third millennium. He beatified and canonized Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the nun associated with the message, and he did it in Rome and not in Poland to underscore that Divine Mercy is for the whole world.

Establishing Divine Mercy Sunday for the Entire Church When Pope John Paul canonized Sr. Faustina (making her St. Faustina), he also, on the same day, surprised the entire world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday (the feast day associated with the message) as a feast day for the entire Church. The feast day falls on the Second Sunday of the Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared, "This is the happiest day of my life."

Entrusting the World to Divine Mercy In 2002, the Pope entrusted the whole world to Divine Mercy when he consecrated the International Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Lagiewniki, a suburb of Krakow in Poland. This is where St. Faustina’s mortal remains are entombed. The saint lived in a convent nearby. The Pope himself remembers as a young man working in the Solvay Quarry, just a few meters from the present-day Shrine. He also says that he had been thinking about Sr. Faustina for a long time when he wrote his encyclical on Divine Mercy. Further, the Holy Father has frequently quoted from the Diary of St. Faustina and has prayed The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy at the saint’s tomb.

Beyond the Life of John Paul II Given all these connections to Divine Mercy and St. Faustina, is it any wonder that Pope John Paul II died on the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday (the evening before the feast day), which fell that year on April 3. It is also no surprise that the Great Mercy Pope left us a message for Divine Mercy Sunday, which was read on the feast day by a Vatican official to the faithful in St. Peter’s after a Mass that had been celebrated for the repose of the soul of the Pope. Repeatedly Pope John Paul II has written and spoken about the need for us to turn to the mercy of God as the answer to the specific problems of our times. He has placed a strong and significant focus on the Divine Mercy message and devotion throughout his pontificate that will carry the Church long after his death.

Weekly Holy Hour The only time Our Lord asked the apostles for anything was the night He went into His agony. Not for activity did he plead but for an hour of companionship (Archbishop Fulton Sheen). Every Wednesday there is a Holy Hour in the church beginning at 7pm. The hour begins with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The rosary is prayed with beautiful reflections followed by time for silent adoration and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The Holy Hour ends with Benediction. Please come and give Jesus the gift of your presence. This is a time of abundant blessings for all!

This will be followed by Benediction, and individual veneration of a first class relic of St. Faustina. One of our Mary Star priest will lead the devotions. The celebration will conclude with a

He told her: “On this day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary of St. Faustina 699) John Paul II proclaimed Mercy Sunday an official feast of the church in April of 2000 when he canonized St. Maria Faustina. There will be free Divine Mercy Literature in English and Spanish available on the patio after all the morning masses.

Stained Glass Window Protection

April 3, 2016 5

We’d like to thank all those who have graciously and generously donated towards our Stained Glass Window Protection project! Small windows cost $2,000.00 and larger windows cost $4,000.00 to keep safe. St. Paul the Apostle tells us that God loves a cheerful

giver. The Scriptures also tell us that it is more blessed to give than receive. Studies over the years have shown that those who give generously and willingly often experience a sense of self-satisfaction. When you give to the Stained Glass Windows Protection, you are not only helping us who are in need of your donation, but you may also be contributing to your own well-being. We continue to pray for you in our daily Masses and prayers that are offered by the Priests at Mary Star. Please contact Josephine Frka at (310) 833-3541 ext. 205. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Madonna Dell’Arco Mosaic Dedication On Sunday, Apri1 17, 2016 the Italian Catholic Federation is having the dedication of the new Madonna dell’Arco mosaic at the noon mass. A luncheon will follow in the auditorium. Price $20.00. Call Neal Di Leva at 310-433-1044 for tickets. The Italian Community has been

long devoted to the Madonna dell’Arco. The name of the Madonna dell’Arco originates from an area where there were many aqueduct with arches (arco) and columns built during the Roman Empire. On one of these columns a devoted artist painted the image of the Blessed Virgin and Child. Many centuries later, youths were playing bocce ball near this column. After a clumsy throw, the ball of one of the players hit a tree that shaded the sacred shrine. The youth, blinded by anger, retrieved the ball and threw it against the image of Our Lady, hitting her the right cheek. To the shock of all those present, the cheek was seen to bleed, as if it were of real flesh. Years later this original image was cut away from the column and placed in the Sanctuary in Naples, Italy. Many miracles were recorded since then and in March 1675 for about a month, the image of Our Lady was seen surrounded by stars, while the right cheek appeared red with blood. A portrait of the image of the Madonna dell’Arco was dedicated on January 27, 2013 at Mary Star and was placed in the Shrine of Saint John Joseph of the Cross. Three years later the portrait was replace with a mosaic donated by Mr. Joseph Scotti and on January 12, 2016 the mosaic was permanently placed on the wall in the shrine. Please join us to celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Arch. All societies to bring their banners and also bring flowers from the garden and place them in front of the Madonna dell’Arco.
