Recognitions and Awards

A. AFS Ambassadorship/Exchange Program – Rylie Conway Rylie spoke about the intercultural learning program that brings cultures together by helping people connect through an exchange program. The program was started by ambulance workers during World War II who wanted to celebrate the differences in ethnicity and cultures. “We are expected to bring back lessons learned in this experience to our home districts.” The application process consisted of essays and interviews. Fifty-five students were selected. Mrs. Kriss and Mrs. Richter spoke about how proud they were of her efforts and initiative.

B. Amy Henris Commendation Mrs. Fletcher, Hauppauge Middle School Principal, said that the next recognition is special, unique and wonderful. Ms. Henris is a substitute teacher who drew cafeteria duty. During her duty period she spotted a student’s who appeared to be in distress. presented certificates to Pat Lesser (Board Achievement Award-75 Points); Eileen Mass (Board Excellence Award-150 Points); Geri Richter (Board Mastery Award-250 Points). Mrs. Kriss sad that this represents a great deal of personal time that board members devote to these professional development opportunities. “Thank you for the time you spend for our district.”

Superintendent’s Update

Mrs. Kriss mentioned the following in her update: “Mrs. Richter, Mr. Pitrelli, Mr. Stucchio and I were in Cincinnati

attending the second US Department of Education conference ‘Collaborating to Transform the Teaching Profession.’ We were asked to share our ideas and the progress that has been made since Denver. We shared initiatives that are helping us reach our goals and that we maintain a focus of respect, trust, consensus and providing quality education for our students.”

Congratulations to Mrs. Michele Rothfeld who has been given the PTA Lifetime Achievement Award in the Pines. She was the first recipient of this award at the Pines.

NYS has been granted a waiver on NCLB legislation by the Federal Government. This may affect the status of the middle school that was labeled as in need of improvement.

Tri-State Consortium is here for their visit. They are asking three essential questions as part of their program review. We anticipate receiving their report in the summer. Thank you to Dr. Michael and Mrs. Gordon for the work that they put onto this visit. We are looking forward to recommendations to strengthen our writing program.

There was a question from a community member regarding the amount of agreements relating to the overpayment of several employees, from a previous agenda. The total amount of those agreements was $31,489 and of that $23,616 will be repaid. Working this out will save additional legal fees.

There was an article on Patch.com recently related to the resignation of Mrs. Ruthkowski, Principal of Bretton Woods. Mrs. Ruthkowski and her family are relocating to another state. We are sorry to see her go.

Tonight we are recommending the appointment of Mr. George Gagliardi, currently Assistant Principal at the high school, to that position. Additionally, we are recommending that Dr. Donald Murphy be appointed as Director of Mathematics and Information Systems.

Adoption of A. Motion made by Mrs. Lesser, seconded by Mr. Schnebel that the

Minutes minutes of the Regular Meeting of April 24, 2012 be accepted as printed carried by vote of 7-0.

B. Motion made by Mrs. Mass, seconded by Mrs. Macaluso, that the minutes of the Regular Meeting of May 8, 2012 be accepted as printed carried by vote of 6-0-1. (Mrs. Todaro abstained.)

C. Motion made by Mrs. Todaro, seconded by Mrs. Hodosky, that the minutes of the Annual District Meeting of May 15, 2012 be accepted as printed carried by vote of 6-0-1. (Mrs. Lesser abstained.)

D. Motion made by Mrs. Mass, seconded by Mrs. Hodosky, that the minutes of the Regular Meeting of May 22, 2012, be accepted as printed carried by vote of 6-0-1. (Mrs. Richter abstained.)

8. Tenure Recommendations/Celebration / Personnel Items

Item 9.1A-1 – Appointment of Donald Murphy as Director of Mathematics

& Information Systems Motion made by Mrs. Macaluso, seconded by Mrs. Lesser carried by vote of 7-0.

Item 9.2A-2 and 9.2A-4 – Appointment of George Gagliardi as Elementary Principal and Resignation of George Gagliardi as Assistant Principal Motion made by Mr. Schnebel, seconded by Mrs. Macaluso carried by vote of 7-0

Item 9.2B-2 – Retirement of Linda Ryczak as District Clerk Mrs. Richter read the following statement: “I’ve held this seat for less than a year and have sat at this table for less than eight. Some of the board members sitting here have been here much longer than that, but no one has had a seat at this table longer than our district clerk of 23 years, Linda Ryczak.

She’s worked with countless boards, board presidents and superintendents. She’s been through Hauppauge’s high times and low points. Through it all, Linda has done a magnificent job of supporting the school board and providing consistency and deep dedication to the Hauppauge School District. It is with fondness and regret that I ask for a motion to accept the resignation of Mrs. Ryczak.

Motion made by Mrs. Lesser, seconded by Mrs. Mass carried by vote of 7-0.

Tenure Recommendations:

Item 9.2A 2.2 Motion made by Mrs. Mass, seconded by Mrs. Hodosky Mrs. Ruthkowski, Principal of Bretton Woods, spoke about Luann Audus, a reading teacher at Bretton Woods. Luann was recognized as “teacher of the year” from Senator Trunzo. With high praise she gave her unqualified recommendation for tenure. Mrs. O’Connor spoke about Chris Dowd, technology teacher at the high school. She spoke about the many activities like Robotics and Science Olympiad that have established him as an important part of our high school staff. He is amazing. Mrs. Carey, Director of L.O.T.E./Integration of Instructional Technology, spoke about Miriam Schwartz, Second Language FLES teacher. She said she is collaborative with the teachers in the school and supports content area instruction to allow students to learn Spanish and complement instruction in other content areas. She is a team player. Mrs. Fletcher spoke about Michelle Bernardo, teaching assistant at the Middle School. She said that Ms. Bernado is warm and thoughtful. She works with special needs students. Staff in the building has wonderful things to say about her and she is proud to recommend her for tenure. Two other teaching assistants, Dana Verelli and Jeffrey Almonaitis, also received tenure. They were unable to attend this meeting. Motion carried by vote of 7-0

Discussion:

Regarding the ECAF report, the Middle School yearbook fund has a very large balance. When the Aquilla had a large balance, they were asked to distribute the funds. Why would they carry such a large balance? Mr. Stucchio said he would get the answer for the board and put it in an update.

Are the Suffolk Transportation contracts for all buses? No, they are for the vans. This is both school year and summer program.

What about Atlantic Express? We have an extension on that agreement that will cover next year.

Consent Agenda Motion carried by vote of 7-0. Correspondence Mrs. Richter said that the Board received a letter from several third grade

Pines parents regarding the FLES program.
