‘Developing Young People for a Sustainable Future’

Workshop OverviewsVivienne Brown, Careers Scotland ‘Career development: the chain reaction’This workshop will look at the links between career guidance and development and positive learning and skill development. It will explore how and why career development raises self-confidence and self-belief, how it improves motivation, well-being and willingness to take calculated risks, based on improved understanding of work and learning goals. The workshop will investigate how supporting individuals to set career goals drives stronger educational ambition and career aspiration.

Carole Brown, Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) ‘Just in time careers advice for students’School life runs at an incredibly fast pace. Career advisors in schools have little time for in depth one-on-one counselling with their students, all too often having to make do with giving career advice ‘on-the-run’ in an ad hoc and uncoordinated way. This workshop will look at strategies to ensure that career advice given in this context is still relevant and meaningful.

Lesley Tobin, Dusseldorp Skills Forum ‘The Y Green project’This workshop will examine the development of the Y Green project. Inspired by the Californian Youth Energy Service project, the Y Green project is a project where young people are trained and subsequently employed as home sustainability advisers, helping residents to reduce their utility bills. The young people involved in the project participate in a nationally accredited course in Home Sustainability Assessment delivered by the Western Sydney Institute of TAFE. The aims of the project include providing skill development for young people in an emerging ‘green’ employment area, increasing awareness of all participants of the need for, and ways to improve energy and water efficiency, and encouraging local youth into further education and training.

Michael McQueen, The Nexgen Group ‘Storytelling: the secret to impacting and influencing Gen Y’This workshop will explore ways of engaging Gen Y. Seen in every culture, used throughout the centuries and understood from even the youngest age, stories are a powerful tool for teaching and learning. Similarly, when it comes to engaging Gen Y, never underestimate the power of narrative.

Vanessa Whelan, ACT Government/Vanessa Morris, SEE-Change ‘Working Green’This workshop will look at a Canadian model, ‘Working Green’ as a career guide for young people motivated by concern about critical issues facing our planet. It investigates professionals from both traditional fields and new interdisciplinary programs, who in their daily working lives strive for sustainable solutions. “As educators our focus is in the creation of a sustainable future. ‘Working Green’ gives students a chance to critically view our current societal paradigm, and offers them a direct path in changing our course.” - Rhea Rose, Teacher, Coquitlam Alternate Basic Education, Coquitlam, BC.

‘Developing Young People for a Sustainable Future’

Vicki Larkman, ACT Department of Education and Training ‘Supporting students as carers’A considerable number of our students, many of whom choose not to disclose, care for another family member. As teachers, we are often unaware of the enormous responsibility these young people carry outside of school life. This workshop will examine the pressures faced by young people as carers so that we can better understand their situation and provide them with the appropriate support and assistance they undoubtedly need.

Moir Holmes, Canberra Institute of Technology ‘Australian Flexible Learning Framework’This workshop will look at the way in which e-learning currently supports vocational learning in schools and the various software and platforms available. It will examine developments in e- learning, such as ‘e-portfolios’, and what the future of vocational learning might look like in this context. For example, how does a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) support vocational learning? What do you need to make e-learning flexibility work for you and your students? What is the Australian Flexible Learning Framework and what practical assistance does it offer to help you start teaching and training online?

Sue Hepperlin/Chris Whitton, ACT Accreditation and Registration Council ‘Sharing best practice amongst college RTOs’ RTO compliance and the auditing process can often seem incredibly daunting. But this need not be the case. This workshop will examine some best practice case studies, provide an easy ‘how to’ guide and offer useful tips for taking the stress out of RTO compliance and audits.

Michael Hastings, RMIT ‘The economic downturn and future of work - what does it mean for career development of students?’The impact of the economic downturn is a challenge facing not only young people but the entire nation. This workshop will explore the issues and consider strategies for helping young people steer the course in a positive and sustainable way.

Australian National Schools Network (ANSN) – ‘Rethinking schools for a changing world’This workshop will investigate issues presented through the increases in the number of Australian high school students now working part-time while studying full-time. Over the past decade, the problems of juggling school and work have come under scrutiny from teachers, parents, employers, unions, and young people themselves. The ANSN believes that the time has come to craft an inter-generational Compact for Australia’s young people. The purpose of this compact is to promote fair conditions for young people at school and at work, and to support them as they seek to manage the competing demands of study and part-time employment.

Judy Lundy/Rod Hattch, Wisdom ‘Achieving training excellence’Wisdom provides a range of services in areas such as training/education, business planning and consulting. After having achieved the highest possible level of training excellence with Training Excellence – Gold, through AQTF 2007, Wisdom won the 2008 Australian Small Business Champions Award in the category Business Services. This workshop will provide insights to achieving training excellence. Kate Castine, Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC)/ Sally Rahmani, Daramalan College ‘Career Advice Australia Lighthouse Projects’This workshop will present examples of good practice in career education from a leadership perspective. It examines the role that career advisors have to play in implementing good practice in schools. Daramalan College has been selected as a successful Lighthouse School for 2009 for their project ‘Validating a Careers Education Program’. Sally Rahmani is the careers advisor who spearheaded the project and exemplifies the leadership that is needed in schools.

‘National VET sector sustainability policy and action plan’ The vocational education and training sector has a significant role to play in the transition to a low carbon, sustainable economy while supporting the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Agenda and Productivity Agenda. This workshop will examine the implications of these agendas for the VET sector, including the integration of green skills within core competencies for all apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications and the standards for RTOs to be certified as green skills providers.

Gary Scott , Canberra Institute of Technology ‘Environmental Sustainability’’This workshop will explore Canberra Institute of Technology’s (CIT) training program in sustainability, CIT Green, which aims to provide students with the core skills and knowledge to successfully apply sustainability principles. The workshop will look at teaching students how to reduce their environmental impact and what they can do in their corner of the world to really make a difference.
