REGION 4 Regional Data EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Pikes Peak region (Region 4) is composed of El Paso, Park and Teller Counties. Against the backdrop and in the midst of America’s most beautiful mountains sit some of Colorado’s most thriving communities, rich in business experience with historic backgrounds of achievement. The Pikes Peak region is a diverse area with a sunny, pleasantly dry and temperate climate, with surroundings conducive to a year-long outdoor lifestyle, all contributing to a healthy and productive workforce – an extraordinary environment in which to live, work and play. The major employment and commercial center for the region is Colorado Springs, which is proud to be home to the United States Olympic Committee Headquarters and Training Center, the United States Air Force Academy, more than 35 Fortune 500 companies, the historic Broadmoor Hotel and the breathtaking Garden of the Gods. Offering a highly educated and skilled workforce, the area has outstanding educational facilities and numerous military installations including Fort Carson – one of the largest employers in the state. The South Park National Heritage Area, one of only 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States, encompasses 1,800 square miles of public and private lands that offer rich historical, pre-historical and natural resources, including two state parks and a number of state wildlife areas, portions of two national forests, national wilderness areas, as well as thousands of acres of working ranches and historic mining districts. Still active today, the Cripple Creek Mining District was formed in 1891 and has produced in excess of 25 million ounces of gold. Long known for its outdoor recreation and the fossils, rocks, hills, and valleys that make up Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, legalized gaming has also brought additional visitors to the area.
