MEMORY LANEA Look Back at Some of the Memorable Games in the Series

February 17, 2012 @ the “M Dome” Munster 69 Andrean 59

Last year’s game was actually much closer than the final score would indicate. In front of a packed house at the “M Dome”, Munster led 18-13, at the end of a fast paced first quar-ter behind a pair of threes from forward Danilo Zekovic and four points apiece from Mark Strbjak and Nate Bubash. Andrean came roaring back to lead by two at the half, 30-28, as six different play-ers found their way into the scorebook in a balanced 59’er attack. The third quarter was a back and forth affair that found Andrean still holding onto a one point lead at the end, 48-47, as Nick Davidson scored nine points and Collin Wojcik added seven for the Niners to offset seven points from Mike Schlotman and five more from Strb-jak for Munster. In the final frame Munster finally took over as the Mustangs defense held the Niners to just a pair of field goals, while Schlotman tallied eight, Bubash six and Strbjak added four more for the final mar-gin. Munster had three players in double figures: Schlotman, who led all scorers with 21 points, Strbjak with 16, Bubash with 15, and Zekovic with nine. Andrean was led in scoring by Davidson with 17, Wojcik with 16, Josh James with nine and Skyler Moss with eight.

December 16, 2006 LAC Tournament Semi-Finals @ Calumet

Munster 45 Andrean 43 In a low scoring, defensive struggle in the LAC Tournament semi-finals at Calumet, Munster prevailed on a Mike Bizoukas lay in at the buzzer after four missed Munster free throws and a missed lay-up down the stretch. Bizoukas led all scorers with 15 points while Adam Norton led the way for Andrean with 14.

January 6, 2006 @ “5959 Broadway” Andrean 54 Munster 53

In front of a raucous, overflow crowd at 5959 Broadway, Andrean handed Munster their first defeat of the season when Jesse Repay drove the crowd into delirium when he drained a baseline trey with five seconds left to give the Niners a come from behind, 54-53 win in dramatic fashion. Munster jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before Andrean’s Chris Kaba got hot. Kaba nailed seven first quarter points to help give the 59’ers a 16-14 lead at the end of the first stanza. In the second quarter Andrean took advantage of stone cold Munster shooting (1 for 8 for the period) when Luke Haran-

gody heated up, scoring eight of his twelve first half points to stake the Niners to a seven point, 29-22 lead. Munster’s defense stiffened in the third quarter however, holding Andrean to just a pair of field goals and seven points in the period while the Mustangs put 20 points of their own on the board to lead by six heading into the final frame. The 20 point blitz by Munster in the third was highlighted by six

points from Jeff Marinier, on a pair from beyond the arc, and five points from Steve Luptak. The Stangs then stretched the lead to 10 points with four minutes to play in the final quarter before Andrean started the comeback. Munster helped out the cause by going 6 for 12 from the free throw line in the frame but still led by two points at 51-49 with 35 seconds to play. At that point the game had been so tight everyone in the oxygen starved gymnasium was anticipat-ing overtime. Munster’s Mike Bizoukas hit two free throws to give the ‘Stangs a four point lead before Haragody got a put-back on the ensuing possession, cutting the lead to 53-51. Munster then turned the ball over to set the stage for Repay’s redeeming heroics. After the inbounds pass with time running out, Repay drilled a three from deep in the

corner to win the game and send the place into pandemonium. Harangody finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Bizou-kas had 17 to lead the way for Munster.

December 17, 2005LAC Tournament Championship @ Calumet

Munster 53 Andrean 51 It was a fitting game for the conference tournament champi-onship as Andrean and Munster slugged it out for 32 minutes before Munster escaped with a two point victory at Calumet. The first three quarters saw the lead change hands 20 times and the scored tied another 10 times before the Mustangs built a 10 point lead with 90 seconds to play behind center Scott Rut-kowski. Andrean staged a furious rally, hitting four threes in the 4th to close the gap to the final margin before falling short and Munster emerged victorious 53-51. Rutkowski, who went toe to toe with Andrean center Luke Harangody all night, had 20 points to lead the Mustangs. Harangody matched Rutkowski’s effort with 20 points of his own as the two centers shared game scoring honors. Aric VanWeelden had 15 and Steve Luptak added 10 for Munster. Chris Kaba and Anthony Johnson each had 15 point efforts for the Niners in the loss.

January 7, 2005 @ the “M Dome” Andrean 68 Munster 64

Luke Harangody exploded for 36 points including 12 in a 21 point Niner first quarter as Andrean outlasted Munster 68-64 in front of a capacity crowd at the “M Dome”. Trailing by eight, 21-13, at the start of the second quarter, the Mustangs responded with a 22 point onslaught of their own to take a 35-34 lead at the half behind seven apiece from Mike Bizoukas and Aric VanWeelden. Haran-gody, who had seven points of his own in the second quarter, kept the pressure on in the 3rd quarter by adding eight more to his tally sheet but Munster still managed to extend their lead to three at 51-48 at the end of the frame behind a nine point effort by Steve Luptak. The big guns for Munster fell silent in the fourth as the Stangs scored just seven points from the floor and 13 for the quarter, while Harangody dropped in 11 more to lead the Niners to a 20 point quarter and the victory. Chris Kaba added 14. Bizoukas had 15 to pace Mun-ster, who had four players in double figures as VanWeelden and Scott Rutkowski scored 12 apiece and Luptak finished with 11.

December 18, 2004LAC Tournament Championship @ Calumet

Andrean 60 Munster 57 In a typical back and forth Munster-Andrean game, the Nin-ers rallied from a 10 point halftime deficit to win 60-57 and capture the Lake Athletic Conference tournament championship at Calumet. A three point bucket from David Boarden in the closing seconds won it for Andrean. Munster built a five point, 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and an eight point second quarter effort from Jeff Marinier helped the Mustangs extend the lead to ten at the half at 37-27, before the Niners woke up. Luke Harangody threw down eight of his game high 15 points in the third quarter as Andrean trimmed the deficit to 48-46 at the end of the frame. In the fourth quarter it was the David Boarden show for Andrean. Boarden, who shared game scoring honors with Ha-rangody with 15 points, put 11 on the board in the final period while the Niners held Munster to just two field goals, setting the stage for Boarden’s buzzer beating heroics. Jeff Marinier had 12 and Steve Luptak added 11 to pace Munster.

January 9, 2004 @ “5959 Broadway” Munster 82 Andrean 80

In a high flying, high scoring affair in front of a roaring ca-pacity crowd at Andrean, Munster came out on top in an 82-80 shootout. The Mustangs had three players score 20 points or better, while Andrean had two players over 20 and one with 19. Munster came out on fire in the first period, scoring 21 for the quarter to build a five point, 21-16 lead behind 10 points from Josh Martin, who finished with 24 on the night. Bernie Talian had 10 points in the quarter to spark Andrean, including

three from downtown. Talian would finish with 19 for the game including six buckets from beyond the arc. The Mustangs continued to burn up the nets, posting 26 in the second frame behind 10 points, including a pair of triples, from Andrean transfer Pete Trgovich III and nine points from

Dustin Bothwell. “Three-Pete” had 20 in the contest. As red hot as Munster was shooting, Andrean was hotter as the 59’ers managed to shave a point off the lead with a 27 point second quarter of their own behind nine from Frank Provenzano and seven from David Carson, coupled with a pair of Talian triples. The Niners took over the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 20 to 12 to take a four point, 63-59 advantage into the final frame behind 11 more from Provenzano, who led all scorers with 26 in the contest. Eight points from Bothwell in the period kept the Mustangs breathing heading into the final eight minutes down just four. Bothwell would finish with 25 for the ‘Stangs, including three from

downtown. The offensive fireworks continued in the final stanza as Car-son, who matched Bothwell’s 25, threw down 10 points in an attempt to stave off a determined Munster comeback. It wasn’t enough as the Mustangs outscored Andrean 23-17 in the period behind nine more points from Martin to win 82-80. Both teams sizzled from long range as Andrean dropped in 11 three-point-ers and Munster 10 from beyond the arc. Despite a shaky first half at the free throw line (5-9, 55%), Munster won the game from the stripe, nailing a sparkling 11 of 12 in the second half to finish 16-21 for the contest. Andrean was 9 of 12 from the line but only got to the stripe four times in the second half.

February 13, 2003LAC Tournament Opener @ the “M Dome”

Munster 54 Andrean 52 Although Andrean had a five point, 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Niners never recovered from a 21 point Munster second period, as the ‘Stangs took a lead they never relinquished, en route to a 54-52 victory. While Munster’s defense was holding Andrean to five points in the second, the Mustangs offense rolled, with six players scoring in the frame, led by five apiece from Josh Martin and John Jamicich to give Munster a 28-17 lead at the half. Munster still held the same 11 point margin at the end of three quarters at 42-31 after the teams traded punches in a stand-off period highlighted by three long range bombs from Jamicich for Mun-ster and a pair from Pete Trgovich III for Andrean. Jamicich and “Three-Pete” each had five treys for the game. Trgovich, dropped in 11 points in the fourth to lead a furious Andrean comeback, but the Mustangs were able to hold off the rally, winning 54-52. Trgovich would lead all scorers in the game with 23. Jamicich had 17 to lead Munster while Dustin Bothwell added 13 and Jim Phelan chipped in 10 points.
