The Magi did homage to the newborn
King. Having been warned in a dream,
they departed the country another way.

Dear Parishioners:
On this Solemnity of the Epiphany, Catholics throughout the world mark on our doors the Blessing of the Magi's adoration of the Baby Jesus. Passing in and out, on our daily routines, we are always to adore Christ Jesus dwelling within each of us. The formula (for 2017) is 20 + C+M + B + 17. First, the letters represent the initials of the Magi — Caspar, Malchior, and Balthazar — who came to visit Jesus in His first home. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the beginning and the “17” at the end, mark the year.
To Bless your home on Epiphany, pray: "May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us; and may we seek and serve, in everyone we meet, that same Jesus who is your Incarnate Word, now and forever. Amen. God of heaven and earth, You revealed Your only-begotten One to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect Your love. We ask this through Christ our Savior. Amen." After this heart-felt prayer, write 20 + C+M + B + 17 above the entrance of your home and door of your heart. Yes, indeed, the wise still seek Him!!
Christmas Blessings upon you,
Fr. Gabriel

Nonviolence: a Style of Politics for Peace At the beginning of this New Year, I offer heartfelt wish-es of peace to the world’s peoples and nations, to heads of state and government, and to religious, civic and community leaders. I wish peace to every man, woman and child, and I pray that the image and likeness of God in each person will enable us to acknowledge one another as sacred gifts endowed with immense dignity. Especially in situations of conflict, let us respect this, our “deepest dignity”, and make active nonviolence our way of life. Jesus himself lived in violent times. Yet he taught that the true battlefield, where violence and peace meet, is the human heart: for “it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come” (Mk 7:21). But Christ’s mes-sage in this regard offers a radically positive approach. He unfailingly preached God’s unconditional love, which welcomes and forgives. The Dubuque Archdiocesan Respect Life and Social Justice Office promotes the dignity of all human life – created in the Image of God – as the basis for the fundamental human right to life. The office, there-fore, seeks to protect and promote the intrinsic dignity of each and every human person through prayer, formation, advocacy and helping the people of God apply Catholic Social Doctrine in their daily lives. Coinciding with the Feast of Holy Innocents (December 28) and the anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision of Roe v. Wade (January 22), the office offers the following videos and discussion questions to explore the topic of the dignity of the human person from conception through birth and childhood.
(For Grades 1-6) Video: Kid President's Letter To A Person On Their First Day Here! https://safeshare.tv/x/ss585814d23d6a6 Discussion Questions: Raising a baby is not easy. Kid President says, "being a person is hard sometimes." What can we do to help moms and dads in our community who are raising a new baby or have a new baby on the way? What can you do to love and respect the life of each person you meet?
(For Grades 7 to Adult) Video: When Does A Human Life Begin? https://safeshare.tv/x/8wURL0rVLbY Discussion Questions: What does the Church teach about the origin and dignity of human life? How can science help us explain to others why abortion is wrong? When do you believe life begins? Do you agree or struggle with Catholic beliefs or methods that re-spect/promote life, e.g. adoption rather than contraception? What makes you struggle?
Pray Together: Loving God, grant wisdom to those who govern us, compassion and courage to those who work to defend human life, and safety and care to every human being. For you alone who formed us in our mothers’ wombs, and who call us home to heaven, are God, for ever and ever. Amen.
FOCUS ON FAITH
GRACE 2.0 AP Leader Comments: Epiphany is always a day of blessing! Our parish is a special blessing to our fami-lies as we grow faith together. We share many opportunities to build community. Our hospitality ministers will distribute door blessings today. As we pass through a chosen doorway in our home, let us bless one another and know that God’s grace is with us through this and every day. Like the shepherds of yore, let us find the stars that guide our living and follow them with courage.
