Referral Marketing Kit Helps Members Build Networks To assist physiatrists in building and maintaining a strong referral network, AAPM&R recently created and distributed the Referral Marketing Kit. Mailed to AAPM&R members in March, the kit in- cludes tools and resources designed to help physiatrists enhance and strengthen their referral bases. It contains tips on building and maintaining referrals and tools that members can use in their prac- tice. Developed by AAPM&R’s Market- ing Committee, the kit provides advice on designing a strategy to cultivate a referral network, useful guidelines on communi- cating with referral sources, and sample letters and surveys. Complete contents of the Referral Mar- keting Kit, including sample letters and documents, are available for easy down- loading in the Member section of the Academy’s website at www.aapmr.org. The Referral Marketing Kit is just 1 of many tools and resources that are available to Academy members through the PM&R Awareness Initiative. Others include slide presentations, community outreach, and member education. Slide Presentations AAPM&R has developed both general and specific presentation programs that consist of slides, instructions, prepared script, and references. These slide and script programs are flexible and can be customized by members to include rele- vant cases from their own practices. Pre- sentations suitable for a professional audi- ence include: Understanding PM&R: Partners in Quality Health Care (For Physicians) Understanding PM&R: The Role of PM&R in Managed Care (Managed Care Executives/Insurers) Low Back Pain (For Physicians) Stroke Rehabilitation (For Physi- cians) AAPM&R has also produced general and specific slide presentations that are suitable for a public audience including: Understanding PM&R: The Role of PM&R in Providing Quality Health Care Understanding and Treating Your Low Back Pain What You Should Know About Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation Traditional versions of these slide pro- grams can be purchased from AAPM&R’s national office, but members can also download them in electronic format free of charge from AAPM&R’s website. Community Outreach Community outreach activities, such as speaking engagements at community meet- ings and local hospitals and participation at health fairs, are the cornerstone of marketing to the public. In 1999, AAPM&R distributed 2 community outreach kits containing fill- in-the-blank news releases, sample letters to the editor, calendars identifying national health observances, reproducible fact sheets, and idea sheets on hosting community events along with instructions and back- ground material. Part of the PM&R Aware- ness Initiative, these kits were designed to provide members with a turnkey package to conduct outreach and to generate awareness in their local communities. Contents are available to members via AAPM&R’s web- site. Member Educational Resources The Academy has also developed edu- cational resources for members as part of the PM&R Awareness Initiative. More than a dozen articles on marketing and managed care topics have been published in The Physiatrist newsletter. With topics ranging from understanding capitated pay- ments to creating a practice brochure, these articles are available online via AAPM&R’s website. Additional Marketing Help In addition to these and other grassroots tools and resources for individual mem- bers, the PM&R Awareness Initiative fea- tures a number of components designed to build awareness of the specialty at the national level. Among the projects under- taken in the last several years: PM&R insert in national edition of USA Today; targeted mailings to managed care medical directors and case managers; exhibiting at national meetings of managed care executives, case man- agers, and primary care physicians and other sources of referral; outreach to medical students and phy- sicians-in-training; national media relations activity to generate press coverage of the spe- cialty; and major expansion of the consumer sec- tion of AAPM&R’s website, www. aapmr.org.
