Message from the Future

Page 14: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Your Mission You have been selected to become a

Planet Protector to save the future of this planet. You will begin training immediately. Once your training in each area is completed successfully you will receive an official Planet Protector badge. When all of the areas are complete and you have received 3 badges you will then be an Official Planet Protector!

Page 15: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Do you accept your mission as a Planet Protector???

Yes I do!

No, I do not.

Page 16: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Get ready!

The adventure starts here!

Page 17: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Because you said no, you have now given up all of your Phys. Ed classes and recess for extra math worksheets until the end of the year.

Do you want to change your mind?-Yes-No

Page 18: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I’m sorry, but because the world is headed for destruction,

saying no is not an option.

If you do not do something now there will be no future.

I accept my mission.

Reducing

We should always reduce first. This is because if we reduce what we use and what we waste that means we are using less energy and fewer natural resources. If we have less waste, that also means that less land is going to be put aside for landfills.

Page 21: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

You’re packing your lunch for school. What’s for lunch?

a) A sandwich in a plastic bag, a juice box, and a pack of individually wrapped cookies

b) A sandwich wrapped in plastic, a can of pop and a packaged granola bar

c) A sandwich in a reusable container, juice in a reusable bottle and a banana

Page 22: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Nice job!

You definitely know how to reduce when packing a lunch

Page 24: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Here is a list of ways you can help reduce waste:

1. Put leftovers in reusable containers2. Pack your lunches in lunch bags or boxes instead of using paper

bags. Also by using plastic containers instead of waxed paper, sandwich bags or aluminum foil you will be cutting back on waste, and your food won’t get squished!

3. Use both sides of a piece of paper when you are doing your homework. This will make your paper last twice as long!

4. Get a library card, by using it books and magazines can be used many times by the whole community, instead of just you.

5. If you are buying a small item at a store, tell the cashier that you do not need a bag for it.

6. Get a library card and use it. Books and magazines can be used many

times by the whole community instead of just once by you. 7. After you buy a small item, take it home in your pocket. You do not

really need a bag.8. Buy in bulk, or get larger packages and then put the amount you

need in reusable containers. This will save you money and on the amount of packaging that has to be used. 9. Save energy by turning off tvs, radios, and lights when you are not using them.

• You’re in a store buying some new clothes because you’ve grown taller and nothing fits anymore. You see 10 new shirts that you like. What do you do?

a) Buy them all because you can never have to many clothes

b) Buy them all because you can always give them to your little brother or sister

c) Buy only what you really need

Page 26: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Nice job!

You definitely know how to properly reduce!

Page 28: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Congratulations! You have just obtained your ‘Reducing’

badge. You are now an expert on waste reduction and are on your way to becoming a Planet Protector!

Way to go!

Page 29: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

ReusingReusing an item refers to using it twice, or even many times, instead of just once. This helps by keeping it from becoming waste.

Some ideas for reuse include using glass or plastic jars after they're empty, or taking a cloth sack to the store when you shop (you don't need a bag, and you can use the sack again the next time).

Take along washable cups or travel mugs instead of disposables; a lot of restaurants and convenient stores will be glad to fill or refill your own mug.

Save your old clothes for a garage sale or give them to a charity. If they are ripped or torn and cannot be repaired, then use them for cleaning rags (cut off and save the buttons first).

Use a hand towel for drying your hands and dish cloth or sponge for wiping up spills. They can be cleaned and used again instead of being used once and thrown away.

• You finish a carton of milk while having your morning cereal. What do you do with the carton?

a) Put it in the paper recycling

b) Make it into a bird feeder or some other crafty project

c) Put it in the trash bin

Page 31: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Way to go!

Reusing

When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates, utensils, and plastic food storage bags, don't throw them away! Wash and reuse them!

When you decide to replace something large and "reusable", be sure to donate the old one to charities. Most of the time the item can be repaired by someone, and then given to others, instead of being put into landfills.

Hold a yard sale or give-away. And ask your neighbors to join in too -- this shares the work and increases the number of unused things that can find new homes and new uses

Use cloth gift bags and stop ripping the paper off gifts! If you remove the wrapping paper carefully, you can use it again, and there's nothing wrong with doing just that!

Don't forget to tell your mom or dad to use canvas or cloth bags when shopping so they don't need to make the choice between "paper or plastic."

Page 34: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

• After school, your Mom makes you clean up your room. You find lots of clothes that don’t fit anymore. What do you do with them?

a) Donate them to charity

b) Throw them outc) Hide them under your bed.

Page 35: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Congratulations! You have just obtained your ‘Reusing’

badge. You are now an expert on reusing materials and are on your way to becoming a Planet Protector!

Nice work!

Page 38: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Recycling• Finally, there is recycling. This is when used items

are changed back into raw materials, to make new objects.

• This helps save energy, our natural resources and stops our landfills from becoming full.

• Things such as paper, notebook, playground equipment and carpet are all made from recycled material.

Page 39: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

• On your walk to school, you see an empty pop can on someone’s lawn. What do you do?

a) Pick it up and put it in a recycling bin on the way to school

b) Kick it down the street c) Throw it in a trash bin

Page 40: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Nice job!

Way to make 5 centsfrom recycling!

Page 41: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Whoops!Try that one again!

Page 42: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Recycling• Did you know that just about anything in your

home or school that you can’t reuse can be recycled into something else!? A t-shirt can be made from a recycled pop bottle, and one of your school text books might have started off as a phone book!

• You should never throw anything away that could be recycled!• This list shows some of the items that should always be

recycled (or even reused)– Aluminum cans (pop or soup cans)– Cardboard– Electronic equipment (like tv’s or computers)– Glass– Magazines and newspaper– Plastic bags– Tires

Page 43: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

• Which is the first step in recycling waste?

a) Sort the waste at the recycling plant

b) Sort the waste at home

c) Deposit all the waste in your neighbour’s yard
