Firstly, congratulations to for hosting the squash segmentof the inaugural Great Barrier Reef Masters Games. Secondly, I would liketo particularly acknowledge all the people behind the scene who made theevent possible and a wonderful success. It is my understanding that

ran an awesome tournament.

This month we are focusing on attracting more girls to squash. With only29 girls in the NR rankings its time to search for ways to get more girlsplaying our great game. If you need to secure funding for a girls specificprogram I would be willing to assist your club.

Last month I invited submissions from readers to recognise volunteers. Here is a wonderful opportunity to thank a person who has given of theirtime and energy to build a club and/or contribute to club activities.

Is there a volunteer at your club that deserves to be recognised for theirefforts? Every club has that special person who always seems to be therehelping out in some capacity.

They love what they do and are not looking for anything in return so everynow and then it is important that we recognise them and thank them fortheir valuable contribution.

So if you would like to recognise one of your volunteers please contact meon the email below so we can put a story together to say .

If you can provide a photo and a list of what the volunteer does or evenhas done over the years I will put a story together.

Remember ... every volunteer likes to know they are appreciated.

Girls Girls Girls !!!eMag 2013-09

Attracting girls to our sport is arguably thesingle most important initiative any clubcan undertake.

The opportunities for girls to succeed in squashare without doubt the highest they have everbeen. With such limited numbers competing fortitles the chances of succeeding are greatlyenhanced. Getting an early start to learning thenecessary skills involved will help emensly.

A successful player or group of players canbring all important media attention to a club orcentre. Success creates a buzz and an allimportant energy. Everyone feels good as aresult.

Funding for a isnot guaranteed but is generally viewed as aworthwhile initiative by the various forms ofGovernment because they are always trying toget more girls active and participating in someform of organised sport.

Squash has been rated the healthiest sport inthe world. Combine that finding with the factthat squash is a sun safe sport and all of asudden the sport becomes a very attractiveoption for kids and parents.

Here is a suggested plan of attack:

1. Develop a small 1/2 day introductionprogram.

2. Incorporate an exhibition game between 2proficient young girls.

3. Use the exhibition to briefly explain the aim ofthe game and some simple rules.

4. Develop a series of physical activities whichare short and fun to test which girls might be

Girls Development Program

well suited for squash. See who can reallysprint. See who can skip. See who is naturallygifted with eye ball racquet co-ordination.

5. Provide them with appropriate junior racquetsand ball for their age and size. No point givingan 8 year old a full sized racquet and doubleyellow dot ball. They will soon become verydespondent! So make that small investmentand have sufficient modified equipmentavailable.

6. Target existing club members to see whohave kids aged between 5-10 and try to gettheir girls involved. The chances of getting ayoung girl to play squash, who has a mother orfather already playing the game are very high. They already have a support network.

7. Develop a logo and/or a little poster topromote the fact that you are trying to build ayoung girls development group. Highlight thebenefits of squash and promote the details ofhow they can get involved and have a go.

8. Find a person (preferably a female) toorganise and introduce new players to thegame. A squash playing teacher or mother ofone or two girls might be the idealCo-ordinator.

SQUASH

Squash needs to attract more girls to our sport.

They might also become the girl's first coach!

9. Find a person to become a talent scout. Itcould be the same person. Have the talentscout target girls at school athletic carnivals, cross country running, netball and any othersports and look for those players showing signsof speed and endurance. Offering them anopportunity to try squash will potentially bring“athletic” girls into our sport.

10. Once all the foundations are in place, thenseek Government funding to offer moreintensive school holiday camps to reallydevelop the girls skills over a 3-5 day period.Such an event would quickly boost their skillsdevelopment.
