Roll Call and volunteer hours Teresa Nolan – 45 Pat Griffith – 2 Linda Cope – 25 Janell Ketelsen – 2 Sheri Godfroy – 4 Christy Dwyer – 2 Donna Kester – 15 Elaine Peterson – 10 Darlene Pittsenbarger – 10

The evening of March 19th started with a potluck put on by the American Legion Auxiliary for the Legion members to celebrate the Legion’s 100th birthday. Even though it was a small crowd, the food was great, and the fellowship was even better. Chaplin Linda Cope opened the meeting with 9 members present. Chaplin Linda Cope started the meeting with a prayer and then the normal operating procedures were followed. Linda Cope took roll call and recorded 115 volunteer hours for the past month. Last month’s minutes were read by Linda Cope and approved by Pat Griffith. Sheri Godfroy second the motion. All were in favor. Treasurer Pat Griffith gave the monthly treasurer report and copies were distributed. She reported all dues are paid now for our unit. The first subject discussed was the scholarship that is to be given to a senior graduating from West Central and living in Redfield. It was discussed the amount to offer and it was agreed on one scholarship in the amount of $400 would be offered. Christy Dwyer will send a letter to all the seniors graduating asking if they would like to apply for the scholarship and instructions on how to apply. Darlene Pittsenbarger motioned to approve. Janell Ketelsen second the motion. All were in favor. Next was the upcoming Dallas County Meeting to be held at Redfield next Tuesday, March 26th. Linda Cope explained to the group how the rooms were to be set up (as she is going to be gone and is the Dallas County President) and had notes written to help. She also explained that there was information that needed to be provided at this meeting by the President of the unit. Since Barb Horn is out of town this falls on our Vice President Janell Ketelsen. Linda Cope explained what she needed to have ready and in what format. The meeting was then closed with a prayer by Chaplin Linda Cope.

Redfield Clinic News Avoiding Sunburn: Now that spring is here, it is especially important to avoid sunburn. Remember that fair skinned, blue eyed, or red headed individuals sunburn quite easily. Experts advise using sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30, or cover up, especially between the hours of 10AM to 4PM when the sun is highest in the sky and most intense. As the dermatologists say the only safe tan comes in a can. Studies show that 4-5 severe sun burns increase the chance of developing malignant melanoma, the most life threatening form of skin cancer by more than 60%.

Morels, Poison Ivy, Ticks and Chiggers: Dog ticks can spread Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, a potentially fatal febrile illness. Lyme disease is an illness causing fatigue and fever. It is caused by a germ spread by deer ticks. The initial infection is characterized by a bull’s eye shaped red circular spot with central clearing. Deer ticks are hard to spot as they are the size of a period at the end of a sentence in a newspaper. Dog ticks vary in size from period size for young ones to adults the size of a capital “o” in a newspaper. Both are characterized by movement and a tendency to attach to a person’s skin. Wearing long sleeves and pants that are tightly sealed at the ankles and wrists with elastic helps prevent the ticks from attaching to you. Use DEET insect repellant and check your entire body, including your hair, for ticks promptly after going into the woods. If ticks are removed before being attached for more than 12 hours, they are much less likely to spread disease to humans. Chigger bites are intensely itchy bumps that usually occur within 1-3 days after being bitten by nearly invisible insects that can e found in grassy or weedy areas. Avoidance measures are the same as those for ticks.

Poison ivy is a green three leafed plant or vine that emerges in the early spring. It can cause a red intensely itchy blistering rash that 85% of us get when we come in contact with the plant. The rash often lasts for more than two weeks. Pictures of poison ivy and ticks and further reliable information are available at the center for disease control at CDC.gov or at WebMD.com.

When hunting for morels be sure to check with experienced and reliable sources if uncertain about the identity of the mushrooms you find before eating them. Eating the wrong mushroom can be a fatal mistake.

Redfield Development President, Jim B. called our meeting to order with 21 members in attendance. Pam Danielsen was a guest. Minutes were read, and Treasurers report was given. Pam Danielsen spoke with the group about the Mobile Food Pantry, she needs to have the form signed for us to sponsor it. Darci motioned and Tiawny M 2nd to sign. All yes. Old Business:

• Chicken & Noodle Dinner – We had the dinner on a night where a lot of other activities were going on. Despite that, we had a good turnout. We were short on help, due to the activities, and had some left over but not really any different than last year at this time. Thank you to everyone who donated desserts and helped. We appreciate it.

• Story Walk – Obie M provided an update. There was a few things to get done. He needs to have a date to get materials, and a shop day to finish putting the boards together. He thinks it will take 3 or 4 hours. There is not a completion date yet.

New Business:

• Bingo: Martha B discussed the possibility of getting new Bingo cards. Ours are in rough shape. A suggestion was brought up to speak with the Redfield Lions Club to see if there is any interest in going together to purchase some new ones. Frank W will speak with them at their next meeting.

• Brick Donation – Tiawny M - Glen Gary Brick has some 2nds they are wanting to donate and she spoke with them about the possibility of what we may need for the walking path. There was a lot of discussion on this, and Tiawny will work out the details and come back to the group. With Redfield’s history of 2 brick yards, this may be a good opportunity for us to pave with bricks. We also discussed the Callum Foundation, as they are accepting grants right now. She would like to apply, to defray the cost of the bricks, and laying, should this be the direction we chose to go.

• Bacoon Ride – Saturday, June 15, 2019 is the annual event. Heather P discussed her meeting with Mike Mott. More information to come on this, as we are in the beginning planning stages. Ideas were discussed of what we would like to do, and discussed some feedback we had from bikers last year. Heather will get back together with Mike, and then to the city to discuss. Any organization wanting to get involved is encouraged.

The Depot - Jim B is wanting to have some help with the Depot over the summer, to handle the money and phone calls to get help. A few people discussed this, will decide by next month’s meeting. Also we will get the T-shirt information from the middle school for t-shirt designs.

Motion to adjourn: Darci motioned, and Dustin L 2nd – all yes.

Next Meeting is April 15, 2019 at the Redfield American Legion, everyone welcome!
