COLUMNS

Page 2 Riverside Temple Beth El Chai Lights October-November 2013

T his column is either a rip-off of or an homage to The Press-Enterprise’s Dan Bernstein who has written about his sheep-

dogs. I am dedicating my column this month to my dog Shoshi. My husband and I rescued Shoshi ten years ago from the street. At the time, she was 4 or 5 and had just given birth, though we never saw her puppies. A neighbor found her and Jordan said to me: “You should see this cute dog next door.” I was never a fan of dogs, had always been a cat person. But I took one look at this black poodle-terrier mix with big, sad brown eyes, and I fell in love. “I want that dog,” I said. Another family was scheduled to come see her for possible adoption, and I was terrified they would take her. They did not. So the next day, I became Shoshi’s proud and loving mother. When we first got her, Shoshi was terribly nerv-ous and shy. She had clearly been abused. But Jordan

and I gave her so much love – she was our little baby – that she finally came out of her shell. In the beginning, she did not know what it meant to play, but she soon became an avid chaser of balls and of me, often herding me as if I were a sheep. Shoshi reciprocated our love, and was fiercely jealous of any attention we paid to the cats we had also rescued. I could be in another room petting a cat, she would start crying and I would have to instantly leave the cat and pet her, reassuring her that she was my very favorite. A few months ago, Shoshi began to slow down. She became very weak and we discovered (hundreds of dollars in

tests later) that she had Addison’s disease, diabetes, and arthritis, for which we gave her medication daily. That helped for a while but, eventually, she was unable to get up by herself. We had to carry her out-side to go to the bathroom, and bring food and water

Restoring the Patio

O ur patio is often used for a Kiddush and Motzi after a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, serving as a beautiful setting to drink wine

and break bread. The patio area is also used by the Religious School. At other times, it is a nice place to sit and relax at one of the many tables. Some of you may remember a time when the patio area was in fact the front entrance to Temple Beth El, facing Central Avenue. The brick walls between the columns facing Cen-tral were installed many years ago, perma-nently turning our parking-lot back entrance into our main entrance. As a reminder of the original entryway, the dedication plaque still faces the patio area, reminding us that we ap-proach the building’s 50th anniversary next Septem-ber. I can imagine congregants from years past flow-ing into the building, passing the big Podocarpus tree that is still there today. How they must have noticed the tree grow slowly, symbolically anchoring our presence in the community, growing bigger and stronger with each passing year. After so many years, the tree’s roots pushed the concrete up, making the area hazardous. We consid-ered removing the tree but, faced with the prospect of

losing it, Eric Lesser spearheaded an ef-fort to keep the tree. Just before Rosh Hashana, the affected concrete was re-moved, some of the tree roots were shaved down or cut, and a couple of elec-trical outlets were removed. The area around the tree has been replaced with decomposed granite, and the concrete be-yond it has been redone. Eric also donated and planted several wonderful plants on both sides of the patio. What we have now is a beautiful, usable space once again. In the middle is our Podocarpus tree, standing tall and proud, reaching high into the sky, continuing to provide shade to the patio. The next time you are

at the temple, take a moment to walk into this space to see how wonderful it looks now. Our thanks again to Eric, and to Mitch Lavine (Building and Grounds) for their efforts. Most of you know that Eric also played Kol Nidre on the cello during Erev Yom Kip-pur – for the second year in a row! We are very grate-ful for all his contributions. I enjoyed talking with some of you over the High Holy Days. Like many of the other Board

to her. She still loved to eat so we were faced with the question of whether we should put her down. The vet would not give us a straight answer. I kept asking my-self whether and when I had the right to take the life from a living being. How could I play God? When it finally got to the point that Shoshi was breathing with difficulty, I realized that we had come to that moment we had been dreading. It was the second day of Rosh Hashanah. In order to make it as comfortable for her as possible, we called a vet who did in-home euthanasia. Unfortunately, this gentleman lacked grace in his bedside manner, and the experience was a very unpleasant one. Mercifully, it went quickly. I know many of you have had a similar experi-ence. You know how much an animal can become a part of your family and nestle in your heart. Making the decision to end your pet’s life is traumatic, and losing your pet is heartbreaking. Jordan and I have been extremely sad. We miss Shoshi terribly. We try however to focus on the fact that we gave her a happy life for 10 years. Worse than losing her is thinking about the abuse she suffered before we found her. An-imals are part of God’s Creation and do not deserve to be mistreated. That is why I am so grateful to our B’nei Mitzvah students who have volunteered their time at shelters to rehabilitate a variety of animals, as well as to many congregants who have adopted pets from shelters, and to those who have spent their time rescuing animals. In memory of our beloved Shoshi: We have been sustained and our souls protected and nurtured by the life of our beloved companion, Shoshi, who has been taken from us. The ragged tear death has rent in the fabric of our lives cannot be mended. Yet love is as strong as death, and the bonds of love know no boundaries. We still meet; we still love – if not in the world of physical reality then in the gentler world of dream and memory. (adapted from Rami Shapiro) We have rescued another dog, Ollie.

An Evening of Klezmer Music

It has been over 10 years since Klezmer music has entertained a Temple Beth El audience in the Sanctuary. The wait is over! The entire family is invited to experience live Eastern European Jewish folk music, which is precisely what Klezmer music is. The band Hot Pstromi pushes Klezmer music a step further, by fusing it with new Jewish music, Gypsy, Chasidic, world beat and Balkan music as well. The band’s leader and violinist, Yale Strom, visited Temple Beth El last January and entertained the ladies of Temple Beth El at the Annual Sisterhood Membership Brunch. Many congregants asked to bring Yale back with his band to perform a concert for all to enjoy. Hot Pstromi is a sextet, consisting of Yale at Violin, his wife Elizabeth Schwartz: vocals, Lou Fanucchi: Accordion, Leo Chelyapov: Reeds, Duncan Hunter: Percussion and Jeff Pekarek: Bass. Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi will perform on Sat-urday, December 7th at 7:00PM. A Dessert Reception hosted by Sisterhood will follow the Concert. All pro-ceeds from the event will benefit the TBE General Fund and Sisterhood. We thank The Legacy Fund for helping to sponsor this event. Please see the enclosed flyer for details on tick-et prices and ordering your tickets. Contact Susan Tenenbaum for information on the Klezmer Concert.

The Torah is a Tree of Life to them

that hold fast to it and all who sustain it are happy.

Sisterhood News Now that a very busy September has ended, Sisterhood wishes to thank Shira Rich for volunteering her time, after read-ing from the Torah on Rosh Hashanah morning, in helping with the Temple daycare. Shira, as well as Geoffrey and Kimberly Youngerman, helped with Temple daycare on Yom Kippur morning and we thank them as well. Back in August, Sisterhood organized a successful morning of steam cleaning the upholstery of the Temple Social Hall chairs. Our appreciation goes to Lore Magnus, Felice Pope, Christine Leapman, Leila Price and Jessie Yarmoff for working so hard to bring a sparkle to our chairs. Many thanks also go to the many congregants who baked and brought a little sweetness to the Oneg on the night of our S’lichot Service on August 31st.

Two years ago, Sisterhood sponsored a very delicious Sun-day morning in which congregants tasted chocolate products from Dove Chocolate Discoveries, led by our very own congre-gant Sally Loeb. Sally will be back on Sunday, October 20th at 10am for another chocolate infused morning in the Temple Beth El Social Hall. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Dove products will be donated to the TBE Sisterhood. Please join us for a sweet experience!

Finally, Sisterhood joyfully donated a $5,000 check to the TBE GENERAL FUND representing Sisterhood’s annual dona-tion to our beloved Temple. We also donated $500 to the Reli-gious School and paid for the first Religious School lunch of the School Year. Rachael and Carlton Brown: B’nai Mitzvah

Jim and Andrea Brown are proud to announce the upcoming B'nai Mitzvah of their children Carlton and Rachael. They will be leading the Shabbat morning service on Saturday, November 16, 2013, the Friday evening service on November 22, 2013, and an afternoon service followed by Havdalah on Saturday November 23, 2013. The twins are enjoying Matthew Gage Middle School where they excel in science and played on the school basketball team. Carlton also plays on the Matrix travel basketball team and swims for Tidal Waves. Rachael swims for Tidal Waves and is an active member to National Charity League. They both earned the Tidal Waves high point trophy in their age group this summer. Carlton and Rachael also enjoy body boarding, stand up paddle boarding and camping with their family and friends. Since August of 2012 Carlton and Rachael have been involved with the Jeremiah Society for their Mitzvah project. The Jeremiah Society is a group of Jewish adults with special needs who meet at Temple Bat Yahm in Newport Beach once a month for Jewish educational and social activities. This has been an uplifting experience for the whole Brown

family. A poster board about this wonderful organization will be on display in the Temple lobby close to the B'nai Mitzvah. The Browns are excited to share this simcha with the congregation and with family and friends traveling from China, Mexico, New York, Massa-chusetts, Colorado, and all over California.

Twins Carlton and Rachael Brown will lead the morning service on Saturday, November 16 as B’nai Mitzvah.

Members making calls, I heard many good comments about the activities and programs that are going on at Temple Beth El. The comment we heard more fre-quently than any other was how much Rabbi Singer is appreciated. I offer my thanks to those of you who have pledged or made a donation towards Rabbi Sing-er’s full-time salary in response to our High Holy Day drive. If you did not at least get a phone message from one of our Board Members, I apologize. (You may still make a pledge, of course!) And just as a New Year begins, we are saying goodbye to one of our long-standing traditions. This will likely be the last printed edition of the Chai Lights. For many years, an anonymous donor has paid the costs of printing. We switched to bimonthly issues to reduce costs and stretch this contribution for as long as we could. Without a sponsor, the printing costs have become too high to justify using our gen-eral funds. But now that we have a weekly email and a beautiful new website (thanks to Jordan Lund), we are already using inexpensive, yet more effective ways to reach you. Flyers for upcoming events, and other printed materials, will continue to be sent out. We will be changing to an all-electronic Chai Lights starting with the next issue. An electronic bulletin of-fers many better ways to keep you informed, includ-ing the ability to link to image galleries and videos, as well as relevant websites. I want to thank our Com-munications Director, Jason Winston, for producing our printed Chai Lights for the past several years. Over the last year, Jason also had help from Ken Shoji and Sarah Keller. Todah rabbah to you as well. I will be working with Jason to find the most effective way we can transition into this new phase of commu-nication with our members, including coming up with ways to reach those of you who might be unable to view an electronic bulletin. We welcome suggestions.

L’Shana Tova,

Morris Maduro

Creative writing teacher and congregant, Linda Nurick, was inspired to offer this workshop after hearing Rabbi Singer’s High Holiday sermon based on Bruce Feiler’s Hap-py Families. In this book, Feiler suggests that chil-dren feel more secure and in control of their lives when they know the story of their family and feel that they are part of something larger. For further information, please contact our Rabbi or the Religious Committee Co-Chairs, Regina or Sandie.
