On Saturday August 11 Our Redeemer was alive with the sounds of Elvis. Endter Hall was decorated in a complete Hawaiian style in preparation for the movie "Blue Hawaii" staring Elvis Presley. Before the movie, an Elvis impersonator really rocked the hall with great singing and dancing. Elvis certainly made his way around the hall singing to all the lovely ladies. A great Hawaiian meal was served and then everyone traveled to Hawaii (if only in their minds) while watching "Blue Hawaii". This was one memorable evening at Our Redeemer.

Dear Friends:

We just finished tenting our entire facility to kill termites and any other bugs in our facilities. We had the money to cover the entire cost in our building fund, which continues to grow each month to replace what was spent.

Financially, we also ended the summer in the black. We have been able to put money into a fund for an intern beginning September of 2019, and our operating budget is solid.

Our pre-school has also gone from needing to borrow money from the church to meet its bills last year, to having a reserve of money to make it through the summer and prepare for the fall school season. Kudos to our new preschool director Cindy Myers who is doing a great job!

Between 200-300 children were enrolled in summer swimming classes. For the 4th year Kristin Dickerson coordinated the program and the parents raved about how well their children were being taught.

All the children were invited to our VBS program, and we had over 85 children and 25 youth helpers attend. Most children and helpers were non-members from the community. It is my favorite week of the year as so many children have such a positive exposure to faith in Jesus. Wendy Fitzharris again coordinated the program along with Patty Erickson. Wow, what an incredible outreach.

Our Elvis night was a huge success. Around 90 people attended the show, ate Hawaiian pulled pork, teriyaki chicken, tropical fruit, salads, and an Elvis cake prepared by Nancy Shager. Wendy Taylor actually did slave over a hot stove making all the pork and chicken for the event. After dinner we watched and sang along with the movie, “Blue Hawaii.”

We’ve already made plans for next year. Elvis will call a session of Bingo, we’ll have a Las Vegas buffet, and watch and sing along with the movie: “Viva Las Vegas.” Check the church website for videos of this past year’s event, and don’t miss it next year.

Over 30 people have signed up for our annual Labor Day church retreat at Luther Glen. It is a fun weekend with lots of crafts, camp activities, campfire devotions and singing, wine and cheese tasting, fresh food from the Luther Glen farm, and this year we are learning about the 12 apostles of Jesus. We learned both what the Bible says and what early church historians, church Fathers, and non-Biblical sources tell us about their lives.

As we begin the fall, there is a lot happening. Our music program resumes with choirs for adults and youth alike. Look for details in this newsletter. Bible studies and women’s circles resume their regular schedule and this year we are beginning a new grief support group. The group is for anyone who has experienced grief and loss and would like to be a part of a caring community as we explore the dynamics of grief together. The group will begin using a video that is based upon C.S. Lewis’ book: A grief observed. The group will meet Thursday mornings at 11a.m.

It’s hard to believe that this October I will celebrate my 40th anniversary of ordination and this November I will have completed 12 years as your pastor. This year I was elected to a 3 year term to serve on the church council of the Pacific Synod. I continue to find great joy in serving as your pastor. You are an incredible congregation that finds great joy in worship and service to others. You are generous and responsible.

I’d be lying if I said a day in the office is better than a day on the golf course, but every day serving as your pastor is better than retirement or anything else I could think of. Looking forward to another great year with you, another intern coming next September, and continued joyful service in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year. For those of you who are new to ORP, my name is Cindy Myers and I am the Preschool Director. I am very excited to start the new school year with all of you. I have worked with preschoolers and families for the past 18 years and I love it!! I have an amazing husband named Brandon and I have two wonderful children, A daughter named Kamryn Bryce, 9 years old and a son named Dominic Anthony, 1 year old.

Our Redeemer is thrilled to welcome back our Outstanding Staff.

Jean Milligan Started at ORP in 1994. She has her B.S. Degree in Child Development from Cal State Fullerton. She loves working with the littles ones. She lives with her family in Tustin and enjoys camping. Both of her children are Alumni of ORP. Charlee Arvizu Has been with ORP for 12 years. She obtained her Early Childhood Education Certificate from Santa Ana College and her ECE permit from the Orange County Department of Education. She has been working alongside with Miss Jean for 9 years. Miss Cherlee lives in Garden Grove with her husband and son, Liam. On her time off she likes going to Disneyland and spending time with her family. Debra Yamashiroya Has been with ORP for 11 years. She lives with her husband and daughters Drew and Demi. Miss Debra enjoys going to Disneyland and spending time with her family. LaDonna Mays I have worked in the Early Childhood Education field for 20 Years. I also love playing RPG games.

Here are a few reminders from your teachers: * Make sure that you arrive at school by 9:00, so that you don’t disrupt the morning rugtime. * Please help your child use the potty and/or wash their hands before they go to class in the morning. * Please remember to mark jackets and lunch boxes with your child name. * If your child is having a difficult time separating in the morning please hand your child over to the teachers, rather then have the teachers try to take them from you.

Lynda and Jerry Engelhardt Renewal Center Groundbreaking

On Saturday August 11, 2018 the groundbreaking for a new renewal center took place in San Bernardino, Califor-

nia. The center will be named after Lynda and Jerry Engelhardt who are the main donors for the center. It has

always been a passion of Lynda and Jerry to help the less fortunate. This will be their way of helping provide for

those in need.

This center will address the problems that could be clustered around the word ”poverty”—homelessness, hunger,

lack of adequate educational opportunity, and lack of medical care. Hope for the less fortunate comes in the form

of hot meals, food bags, shelter and a shower, clothing, and aerobics class, sewing co-op, or home and support

programs, and a place for kids to come and study, eat, and play after school.

Hope also comes by being one of the many people involved in providing this comfort.

The model of this mission and center is that “charity”—acts of love and generosity-- go hand in hand with

“justice”. That is, each of us in the community is an individual with dignity. Each of us yearns for the same

sense of giving and receiving, of using our skills and having those appreciated, of growing, healing, and having

hope for a better future.

The work at Central City Lutheran Mission (CCLM) is designed not only to address emergency and desperate

conditions facing disadvantaged populations, but also to help create the conditions for physical, mental, and spir-

itual health, deep and abidng hope, and sustainable empowerment through education and self-determination for all

in this community. Mutual transformation is the goal of this project.

Welcome to Sunday Cool! We begin in worship with our families. Pastor Brian has a children’s time after the first set of worship songs. Then we head to North Hall (the brick building on the North side of

campus). Mrs. Sharon Edmondson, our children’s choir director has a short opening with music and fun.

Sunday, September 2nd-Labor Day Weekend!!! We will stay in worship today! Sunday, September 9th-Mrs Sharon will lead the opening and Miss Mary will be starting the new curriculum! She will start out at the beginning with Adam and Eve from Genesis 2: 4-25. Mr. Will is continuing with the older students-they love him! Sunday, September 16th-Mrs Sharon will lead the opening and teach the younger ones about Ad-am & Eve and the First Sin from Genesis 3:1-24. Mr Will is continuing his series with the older stu-dents. Sunday, September 23rd-Mrs. Sharon will be leading the opening and Miss Araceli will be teach-ing about Joseph and His Brothers from Genesis 37:1-28. Mr Will is continuing his series with the older students Sunday, September 30th-We will Worship Together in the Sanctuary-No Class The younger class is using Spark-Activate Faith and the older class is using David C. Cook.

We had a busy summer with the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston and VBS. We took a break from our Sunday night meetings this summer. We will be having a fall planning meeting and decide the best day to meet. Watch for details.

Our VBS was amazing. We had 85 students and 53 helpers. We have several strengths in our VBS. Swimming (obviously!)-we had 3 wonderful lifeguards for VBS-two worked the pool

area and one watched over the water play! Of the 53 helpers 48 were with us the whole week (yup-they gave us the whole week-took time off of work, set aside there other activities and spent the week serving Jesus). More than half of the volunteers were from the community-many had gone through VBS and wanted to come back and serve. Some attend other churches but most consider Our Redeemer their home church. Wendy Fitzharris and Patty Erickson oversee VBS. Pastor Brian Taylor is our Bible time leader and leads the students into a deeper understanding of scripture, Mrs. Sharon is our music leader and the students love her-her love of music is evident and the students learn a little music theory along with the songs, Patty Erickson leads crafts but it is really Anita Griswold and Donna Lee who keep the week going. Becky Vinson made us some fabulous snacks along with her faithful crew.

Our mission project this year was Luther Glen seeds and trees project! We raised $693 to buy vegetable seeds and fruit trees for the farm. The food raised by Luther Glen will be used for Central City Lutheran Mission so families and client can have fresh, healthy food. We learned about this project at Winter Camp and it really spoke to us. At CCLM after communion they ask if everyone has been fed-we want to be part of the project to make sure no one is hungry!

Thank you to all who supported us with prayer, time and supplies! Your donations of food and supplies were a huge blessing.

We are very excited about next year-our theme will be “Super Heroes” and we will have VBS the week of July 29th-August 2nd. Mark your calendars so you can be part of this amazing ministry!

Unfortunately our AED (Automated External Defibrillator) was stolen from Endter

Hall. We informed our Community Health Nurse at Hoag and she arranged for us to get

a new AED and Case given to us. We were very thankful for it. We now have our new

AED located in a case in the Sanctuary hallway by the Choir Room. It should be more

protected there.

On Tuesday, August 7th, we had a successful Diabetes Presentation led by Dr. Harsimran Sinh from the Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag. She shared lots of good information and answered many questions which were very appreciated by the group.
