JBF Recycling on campus has been made easy – just use the colour coded bins. There are several recycling stations located across campus and additional plastic bottle recycling bins outside most buildings. Inside buildings you will find recycling bins located in foyers, offices, catering and next to vending machines. Students – use your Blue Recycling Bag to transfer all your recyclables from your kitchens to the recycling stations located outside your accommodation. Paper – The majority of paper used on campus can be recycled including coloured paper. Exceptions include A4 paper ream packaging which has a plastic coating, waxy paper cups and paper towels because they are made of low quality paper. Cardboard - Please flatten cardboard and leave next to your internal central bin/ recycling points for collection. Cardboard recycling bins are available at Halls of Residences. Plastics – Most plastics have a recycling symbol on them with a number in the middle. Please put any plastics numbered 1 to 6 in the plastic recycling bins. If it doesn’t have a number it can’t be recycled. Mixed Glass, Bottles & Jars – Please rinse out first. Only a few staff kitchens have recycling facilities for glass. Please collect glass in your area and use the glass recycling bins which are located at our Halls of Residences. Food Tins & Drink Cans – Please rinse out first. Only a few staff kitchens have recycling facilities for drink and food cans. Please collect and use the can recycling bins which are located at our Halls of Residences and at a number of other sites across campus. Batteries – You will find battery recycling tubes in most building foyers. All our refectories offer a discount on hot drinks if you bring your own cup so why not invest in a re-usablecup?-itwillbeagoodinvestmentforyouandhelpthe University slim its bin.

End of Term Re-Use SchemeEach year at the end of term the University and British Heart Foundationrunare-useschemeatUniversityownedandleased Halls of Residences. Simply bag up your unwanted itemsincluding;clothing,shoes,accessories,books,bric-a-brac,CDs, DVDs, kitchen and electrical items and drop it into one of the Red BHF donation bins.

Students in University accommodation will find the Red BHF bins on site all year round so you can donate all year!

Notinhalls?Don’tworry you can still drop off your unwanted items at the University sited bins.

BooksA book bank is located at the rear of the library.

Recycling in PrestonPrestonCityCounciloperateakerb-sidecollectionofbothrubbish and recycling. The following bins are provided for households in Preston:

*Not all houses will be in an area with garden waste collections.

This is your guide to reducing, recycling, re-use at UCLan and in Preston. Make full use of all the

opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of your waste and save yourself

money at the same time.

ReduceThe more you buy, the more waste you will produce so reduction is the best option to reduce waste and resource use.

Charity shopping – there are a number of charity shops in Preston where you can pick up some incredible bargains from everydayitemstovintageclothesanduniquepiecesofart.At the same time, you will be helping to support a variety of good causes.

Second Hand Furniture & Electricals – staff and students receive 15% discount in the British Heart Foundation furniture andelectricalshoponFriargate.It’scheaperthannewandyou will be reducing your environmental impact.

Be a Smart Shopper – choose items with less packaging, take a bag with you to the shops, purchase recycled products and seasonal and local produce when available.

Sell or donate things – to a charity rather than throwing them away; for example, at the end of your degree why not sell your core texts to new students.

Food DriveOurStudents’Unionoperateafooddriveattheendoftermto help feed local families via food banks and reduce food waste. Donate tins of food, dried food – such as pasta and rice and unopened and in date food to the Opportunities CentreintheStudents’Union.

Other WasteWaste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE)

Please do not put any waste with this symbol in general bins. Any small electrical items in working order can be donated in the Charity bins located at our Halls of Residences. Any small items for disposal can be sent to FM Waste and Recycling Service (Sizer House) for recycling.

Arrangements for Bulk Waste and RecyclingAt UCLan waste disposal is carefully tracked from the producer to collection and through to final disposal. Please ensure that the correct waste documentation is completed if you have wasteinlargequantitiesorbulkyitemsofwaste.Note:FMWaste and Recycling Service will not collect unless the correct waste documentation is attached. These documents are availableon-lineviatheStudentPortalandtheStaffIntranet.

Confidential waste consoleIt is important that confidential waste is disposed of correctly. At University shredders should be used. All the waste is recycled after shredding. At home make sure you shred personal documents to avoid identity fraud.

*Consoles are only located in some offices on campus, blue bags should be used where these are not available.

Keep on Recycling Please do not contaminate recycling bins with the wrong type ofmaterial-theUniversityreceivesanincomefrommaterialssegregated on campus and then sent for recycling but not if they are contaminated!

Office Recycling To encourage recycling the University replaced individual bins with recycling stations and desk-toprecyclers.Pleaseuseyourdesk-toprecycler to collect waste throughout the day and then segregate it into the appropriate bin.
