Rector’s Message Dear Saints of James, As I turn the page of the wall calendar that hangs beside our wall phone at home, a beautiful picture of Lake Margrethe in Au Sable State Forest, Michigan, appears. In the foreground, the trees at the edge of the still water are silhouetted against the fading pink and blue of the late afternoon sky. Leaves of red and yellow cling to bending branches and are reflected on the surface of the lake. A sense of peace and gratitude radiate from the picture as November lies before me. Captured by this image, my mind wanders down the path of thinking about gratitude, Gratitude Sunday, (November 14 th ) when in thanksgiving to God for all we have been given, we pledge to share our time, talents and treasures. Then I think about gracious and generous giving, and the evidence I have seen of this at St. James; I give thanks. I am reminded of a meditation I read from Uncommon Gratitude by Joan Chittister and Rowan Williams, reflecting on wealth and generosity. They write, “Clearly, the purpose of wealth is not security. The purpose of wealth is reckless generosity, the kind that sings of the lavish love of God, the kind that rekindles hope on dark days, the kind that reminds us that God is with us always. It creates in the holy heart a freedom of spirit that takes a person light-footed through the world, scattering possibility as it goes. The only security holy wealth looks for is fruit of the good business practices it takes to keep on making enough money to give it away to those who need it more. Most of all, perhaps, holy wealth brings in its wake the kind of simplicity that makes wealth a commodity to be shared rather than a product to be flaunted. The wealthiest family I know lives in a small cul-de-sac on the edge of the city in a ranch style house on a residential street. No great wrought iron gates here. No Olympic swimming pool in the backyard. No private plane at the airport. Nothing but a lifetime of philanthropy and good works, both private and public, both known and unknown, both great and small. It is the kind of wealth amassed to make the world a better place for all of us. We sing alleluia to the wealth that invests in what can be—as well as what is. This kind of wealth seeds the hopes of tomorrow today. My favorite philanthropist is a woman whose heart is as broad as her soul, whose mind is as rich as her bank account, who has spent her entire life teaching her children to give away what hard work, privilege, and inheritance have given them. This is the kind of wealth that makes a social contribution that long outlives the life of the giver. (Continued on page 2. . .) Rector’s Message Continued . . .

For this kind of wealth we all sing alleluia. There is no room here for resentment or smallness of soul. These are not people whose wealth we begrudge. These are people who show us that love is not dead, that God is not miserly, that unrequited love is possible.

They teach us what Seneca knew in the first century—that “a great fortune is a great servitude.” It puts us in bondage to the needs of the rest of the world. Like the women in the Gospel of whom Luke speaks when he says that “[the women] provided for him out of their own resources,” it gives us the power to do good. It is not the amount of money a person has that determines her or his real power; it is what that person does with it that measures her or his lasting influence in a society. Where force can only require us to do something, wealth can enable us to do more than we are. What greater alleluia can there be in the world?”

As Gratitude Sunday approaches, may you share the wealth of your time, talents and treasures with generosity and thankfulness of heart. SEB+

If there is a name that is hard to pronounce, please let the Rector know of the correct pronunciation.

November 21, 2010 is United Thank Offering Ingathering.

The United Thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal Church. The mission of the UTO is to expand the circle of thankful people. By offering daily thanks and prayers as a part of your life in Christ and taking the opportunity to put an offering in your UTO box or envelope, you join others to support mission projects at home and around the world. Since the first offering was held in 1889, each year 100% of the collected offering is used for grants. As we become more aware of God’s blessings, let’s remember to give to UTO on Sunday, November 21. UTO boxes are available at the display in the parish hall and envelopes will be in the pews a week prior to the ingathering. Please take time to learn about the many ways UTO has helped people around the world.

St. James collected $528.19 during our May Ingathering and your generous contributions were greatly appreciated. Certainly, we are greatly thankful people!

Thank you, Doris Mattox 2010 UTO Chair

Baptismal Dates for 2010- 2011: “Holy Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saint’s Day or the Sunday after All Saint’s Day, the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord, (the first Sunday after Epiphany.) It is recommended that, as far as possible, baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a bishop is present.” The Book of Common Prayer, page 312. The Baptismal dates for St. James in 2010 and 2011 are: November 7, All Saints Sunday; The Baptism of our Lord. January 9; the Easter Vigil, April 23; the Day of Pentecost, June 12; and All Saints Sunday, November 6, 2011. If you would like to be Baptized or have a child you would like to be Baptized, contact the Rector. Christmas Poinsettia: If you would like a beautiful poinsettia that will adorn our church during the Christmas and Epiphany Seasons, we will be ordering 20 red 7-inch pots and two white 8 1/2 inch pots that will go on the altar. The 7-inch is $7.99 and the 8 1/2 inch is $12.99. Please make your checks to St. James marked for poinsettia. If you have any questions please call Lynn Wright (904-5439). If you would like a poinsettia, please fill a form found on the counter in the parish hall or in the Connection and return it to Lynn or the church office. There is also an option if you would like to contribute to the Endowment Fund or the St. James Building Fund. The deadline to turn in the form is December 20, 2010. NEWS FROM THE VESTRY . . . At the October 18, 2010 meeting, the Vestry did the following:

• Heard the Rector report that we had received a $1,000 grant from the Diocesan Outreach Committee -- $600 for our local outreach program through the Williamson Road Clergy emergency Fund, and $400 for the Sudanese Christian Fellowship to buy Arabic English Bibles for the Sudanese Christians.

• Received word that Mother Sue will take vacation days beginning November 24 and returning November 29. Father Bob will be available during those days, and will conduct the services on November 28.

YOUTH NEWS . . .

Thank you to all who supported our youth in the CROP walk on October 11. We were part of a group of 238 walkers that raised over $20,000 to alleviate hunger.

Thanks also to Carl and Pat Ball for donating a DVD player to the Youth room. We may never want to leave our cozy home!

Upcoming Youth Events:

Nov. 19th-21st FYE "I Heard It Through the Grapevine..." Join us for a weekend of discovering what it means to be an Episcopalian. Rev. Phyllis Spiegel will be with us to introduce us to the three legged stool...come find out what that means! This event is for all youth in grades 8th -12th. Held at Phoebe Needles. Transport available to and from this event on the St. James Bus. January 28th-30 th: Y@C – because it just doesn’t get any better than this! For 6th – 12th grades. February 25 – 26: St. James youth will host the 30 – Hour Famine involving all the RAEY youth from all the Roanoke Area Episcopal Churches. More information about this event will be forthcoming, but plan now to join us (grades 6-12) for this lock-in event to explore hunger issues and take part in ministry in our Area with organizations that fight hunger here in our hometown! This event will start after lunch on Friday when participants pledge to have that be their last meal for the 30-hour famine. We will gather at Church after school, spend the night and through team building, activities, projects, and prayer, we will explore what it really means to be hungry. Did you know that 2 BILLION people go to bed hungry every night – and this includes the ones in our neighborhood too? Pledged and Unpledged Support: In September, St. James received $7,561.00 in pledged and unpledged support. The monthly budgeted income amount was $8,653.35. Please make every effort to keep your pledge payments current. If you are behind in your pledge, please bring it current as we approach the end of the year. Ongoing efforts to reduce the deficit continue through various fundraisers. Kroger Gift Cards: The Kroger gift card rebates continue to keep adding up. In September, we have received a rebate check for $414.25 bringing the year-to-date total to $4,497.44. By using the Kroger gift cards purchased through St. James, we receive 5% of the total monthly gift card purchases. Simply load your gift card before you begin your grocery shopping and use it to pay for groceries and gas. If you do not use your Kroger gift card for a period of 90 days or longer, it will expire and you will have to get a new card. Kroger cards make great gifts. If you would like to purchase a gift card for $5, please see Mother Sue, Dorothy Herndon or Connie Bierly. Treat of the Week: Each Sunday, we will be offering a treat during coffee hour following the 10 o’clock service. Donations are accepted for each treat. All proceeds will go to the Building Fund. Don’t miss an opportunity to receive a treat and contribute to the Building Fund. If you would like to donate a treat, please contact Helen Campbell.

Stewardship Notes

On Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, the annual Stewardship Breakfast was held. We were treated to a delicious breakfast prepared by Karen Smith-Moretz followed by a video produced by Grace Aheron in collaboration with the Stewardship Committee. Pledge cards for 2011 were passed out at the breakfast. If you were not able to attend the breakfast, you can view the video on YouTube through this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVlUnolnGXs.

Your pledge card will be mailed to you. If you attended the breakfast, we hope you enjoyed the food and video, and thought you might like to see the video again. If you are interested in a DVD copy of the St. James Stewardship 2010 video, please contact Mother Sue or Connie Bierly with your request.

As a demonstration of their commitment and support of God’s work at St. James, pledge cards were received from every member of the Stewardship Committee and Vestry to kick-off the Stewardship campaign for 2011. The next step is yours. When we combine our gifts, we are much stronger and better equipped to do God’s work. When we share our gifts, we please God by showing our love for Him, each other and the world. Sunday, November 14, 2010 has been designated as GRATITUDE SUNDAY when we will have the opportunity at both the 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock services to return our thanks to God by pledging our time, talent and treasure. As Gratitude Sunday approaches, please prayerfully consider what St. James means to you and respond by giving generously as we “strive to seek and serve Christ in all persons.” If for some reason you can’t be with us on the 14th, please return your pledge card and time and talent form to the church prior to that date. By letting us know what you are able to pledge on or before this date, you enable the Vestry to formulate a budget for the coming year. “All things come of you O Lord, and of your own have we given you.”

Pledge cards for 2010 are attached to this month’s Connection. Completed pledge cards will be collected on Gratitude Sunday, November 14, 2010. You may also mail in your pledge cards to the church at 4515 Delray St., NW, Roanoke VA 24012.

St. James partners with neighborhood churches in the Williamson Road area to provide emergency financial assistance and referral services to individuals and families in financial distress. Each of the participating churches is asked to make a financial commitment to this outreach program. The Williamson Road Ministerial Association has established $800 as a minimum donation for each member church, double what was requested in 2008.

To meet our outreach commitment, we will be distributing Jimmie Jars in November and ask that you put your loose change in the jar for the Williamson Road Ministerial Emergency Relief Fund. The jars will be collected in late February.

FROM THE LEGACY COMMITTEE . . .

You can endow your giving through your will.

Time &Talent Here at St. James, we are blessed by so many people volunteering to help. Counting the children that are Crucifers, Acolytes and Torch Bearers, there are approximately 100 people who signed up

on last year’s Time & Talent sheets. Many of these people volunteer for multiple things. There are many opportunities to volunteer here at St. James, and we hope that everyone will consider helping in some way. We can always use additional volunteers to be Coffee hosts, Ushers and Nursery attendants, to name just a few. Plus, the committees would love to welcome new members. We ask that everyone try to turn in the Time & Talent Sheets by November 14th. They can be put in the box in the Parish Hall, in the plate or turned in to the Office. Please remember that even if you want to continue doing the things that you were doing this year; please turn in a sheet so that we know that you want to continue. A Time & Talent Sheet is included as an insert in this newsletter. Thank you, Pat Ball NEWS FROM THE ECW . . . The semi-annual business meeting of the St. James ECW was held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 with nine members in attendance. It was decided to purchase 12 new prayer books for the church for needed replacements. The 2010 Newcomers’ Luncheon was a success, but not as well attended as usual. We only served 51 people, but 13 jars of Jackie’s yummy spaghetti sauce was sold and we cleared $133 after expenses. Since this undertaking is so labor-intensive, we may consider giving newcomers a gift basket rather than providing a luncheon. We will discuss this further in 2011. Ladies Night Out in June was well attended at Veranda’s Restaurant and everyone enjoyed it. The Holiday Craft and Bake Sale will be at 9 am on Sunday, December 5 in conjunction with the Advent Intergenerational Workshop. We will meet on Saturday, December 4 at 11 am to set up. We will need homemade cookies, fudge, candies and cup cake liners to fill the Holiday tins that were so successful last year. Also needed, any home baked goods and crafts to sell. We will make more bookmarks after Prayer Group on Tuesday, November 9. Please join us.

I think she is adjusting well and likes the food, asking for seconds. She has care, activities, and will have 6 weeks of therapy for leg and hip. Address: Richfield Retirement, Jane Lewis, Room 441B East, 3615 W. Main Street, Salem, VA 24153. Again, many thanks! God bless and caring thoughts, Douglas Ann Slusher (Jane’s sister)
