wide-open plateau isthe spot; the drive be-tween Bridgeport andWaterville, over thetop as it were, is full

Goodfishing spots are hid-den here and there,old houses can bespotted from the road,and occasionally a hang glider will passby, since the plateau is good for that sortof unusual recreation.The Columbia, Methow and Okanogan

rivers provide excellent fishing, as do themany local lakes. Theres good water forskiing or just a relaxing boat ride. Withspring and the snowmelt, smaller localrivers provide plenty of good whitewaterrafting, then calm down in the height ofsummer, making for fun tubing.How about taking a hike, or maybe a

mountain bike ride, maybe even a horse-back ride? Try one of the many fun and

interesting trails in the Methow Vmore than 400 miles for the choos

There are lots of winter-time activitiesavailable in the Okanogan includingdownhill and cross-country skiing, sled-ding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

A great place for downhill skiing andsnowboarding is the Sitzmark Ski arealocated on the Havillah Road about 20miles from Tonasket. The hill has sevenmain runs and has been the traininggrounds for generations of skiers fromTonasket and Oroville. There is a chair-lift and 660 vertical foot ski run with anelevation of 4,950 feet. Runs range fromeasy to expert only. Sitzmark also of-fers ski rentals and there is also a daylodge where skiers can warm up withsomething to eat and some coffee orcocoa.

The Loup Loup Ski Bowl is locatedbetween Twisp and Okanogan near thesummit of the Loup Loup Pass. LoupLoup has six primary runs to choosefrom with a 1,200 ft. vertical drop. Thereare great tubing runs and rentals forthe whole family to enjoy at Loup Loupas well.The Loup has been a countywide effort

of ski enthusiasts since its inception;volunteers helped build it back in theday, the chair lift was paid for through

fundraising efforts, its one of the fewnon-profit ski areas around. Peoplewho want more information on skiingopportunities on the Loup can check the

website at skitheloup.com.Mount Baldy Ski Area is located north-

east of Osoyoos, B.C. and is popularwith skiers on both sides of the border.In addition to great ski runs there are 20km of marked snowshoe trails and non-groomed cross-country trails, 20 km ofgroomed cross country ski trails for dayuse and a tobogganing area.Another choice for intermediate and ad-vanced skiers is helicopter-assisted ski-ing. North Cascade Heli-Skiing, locatedin Mazama has a variety of downhill andNordic ski packages available. They offer

world-class powder skiing on 300,000square acres in the North Cascades,with some of the most spectacularscenery and best skiing conditions inthe Northwest.About three miles down the road fromSitzmark is the Highland Sno-Park with21 miles of groomed trails for those whoenjoy cross-country (telemark) skiing.There are many areas in the Okanoganto go sledding and tubing as well or fora great work out try snowshoeing.

s one of the most scenic around; theMethow River winds in and around thehighway, the landscape changes fromsagebrush and apple, pear and cherryorchards, to evergreens and mountains.Wildlife watchers will have plenty of op-portunity to look for birds ranging frombald eagles to quail, all kinds of animalsncluding mule deer, the occasional elkand maybe even a moose.Fishermen and fisherwomen, especiallyly fishing types, will love the river; trout,

whitefish or (from October to March) steel-head, the Methow River is the place. Thereare good fishing spots along the bank allhe way upriver from Pateros, including

public fishing spots maintained by the

Washington Department of Wildlife.There are plenty of opportunities along

the Methow for water-related fun too; inthe spring and early summer, the Methowboasts some of the best whitewater rafting

CarltonAround 1890 the first town in the Methow

Valley was the town of Silver. In 1894 alood completely washed away the town.Moving the town up a bench from theriver, Silver rose again with a saloon,blacksmith, three houses and a 2-storystore. The stores second story was set

for entertaining and as a dance hall. Thefirst movie ever shown in the valley wasat this hall.However, the towns of Carlton and Twisp

had taken hold and were prospering. Sil-ver eventually faded into history around1902. In 1907 W.J. Flemming bought the

vacant dance hall/store and haddown and moved by man and hthe thriving town of Carlton. Thmunity dance hall/store from Silvreconstructed and was reintroduthe Carlton General Store and wCarltons first Post Office.

They look at the spectacular views of theCascade Mountains visible from practi-cally every window in Twisp and sigh,"Need I say more?"

Well. Actually, there's a lot more to say.More to the point, there's a lot to do inTwisp. There are really spectacular viewson every side in Twisp, but both Twisp andWinthrop have long been go-to places foroutdoor enthusiasts.There's stream fishing all around, world-

class fly fishing instruction available; thereare some lakes with good fishing tuckedaway here and there around the valley.There are hiking trails galore, from easywalks to serious hikes; there are plenty ofmountain bike trails. There's rock climb-

ng, camping, river rafting. . .whew. Andhat's just in the summer.The Methow Valley is a well-known des-ination for cross country skiing, snowmo-

OkanoganWashingtons best kept secret

The town first began as a trading postestablished north of Salmon Creek byFrank Pard Cummings, but Okanogan,ncorporated in 1907, later became thecounty seat of the largest county in thearea in Washington in 1914.One of the highlights of the year for Oka-

nogan County residents is the county fairheld at the fairgrounds each September.During fair week, thousands of peoplelock to the area to find an understand-ng of the history and culture of the area.Competitions are held in hundreds ofcategories, ranging from arts and craftso dog handling, with prizes given to rib-

bon winners in each category. A rodeoand horse race are also held each year,n conjunction with the fair.The month of June is traditionally beauti-ul and sunny in the Okanogan Valley, justright for the Okanogans annual commu-nity celebration, Sunny Okanogan Days.The celebration is on the first Saturday inJune and starts off early in the morningwith the Kiwanis pancake breakfast. Mer-chants remain open during the celebrationand sidewalk vendors offer tempting food,gifts and souvenirs.The Okanogan Days Parade featuresestively decorated floats, antique autos,he old-time Okanogan fire engine spray-ng innocent bystanders, communityroyalty, horseback drill teams, and more.Music performances by local groups arescheduled throughout the day.Other events include a fun run, lots of

childrens games and activities, a kids petparade and a street dance with live music.n October the town pays homage to theareas agriculture industry with a HarvestFestival and on the day after Thanksgiv-ng, Get Lit in Okanogan is the ChristmasLighting Ceremony.Being the county seat, Okanogan is also

he home to the historic Okanogan CountyCourthouse. Its architecture is reminiscentof the old mission-style and is one of thecountys most attractive buildings. Alson Okanogan is the Okanogan CountyMuseum, which features an extensive his-ory of the county, as well as many Frank

and shop are recre-ated at the OkanoganCounty Historical Mu-seum, as is the oldOkanogan Fire Hallwith its soaring roof,designed for drying of the fire hoses. Themuseum is one of five operated by theOkanogan County Historical Society. Inthe museum, a series of dioramas, mod-els, photographs and displays of relics tellthe countys story from earliest to moderntimes. Beside the museum is a replicaof an Old West town of the early 1900s.Outdoor displays include farm equipmentand what is believed to be the Okanogansoldest structure, a log cabin built in 1879.The museum is located adjacent to theLegion Park, which can accommodateovernight RV parking (no hookup) for asmall fee, which will facilitate seeing themuseum as well as visiting the surround-ing area.For more information on Okanogan, call

OmakThe busy hub o the Okanogan

Omak has events planned for every sea-

son of the year.In summer theres the Stampede andWorld Famous Suicide Race which isalways the second weekend in August.Omak has been a rodeo town almostrom the beginning and in its early daysevery Saturday night, settlers and NativeAmericans gathered from miles around.Horse races took place down a dusty MainStreet and bucking horse contests wereheld in a crude canvas arena.Omaks Stampede and World Famous

Suicide Race has been held since 1935.The event features four rodeo perfor-

mances followed by the World FamousSuicide Race, where horse and rider racedown a steep embankment and cross theOkanogan River for the push to the finishine. There is also a Western Art Show heldn conjunction with the annual event.Other attractions include a carnival

and midway, parades, Western dances,concession row shopping, and a genu-ne Native American encampment. Theencampment is complete with over 100eepees, native dance competitions with

dancers in full traditional dress, conces-sions and more.

There are plenty of parking and camp-ng facilities. For more information, call(509) 826-1002 or (800) 933-6625. Theres fun for the whole family at the OmakStampede.During the spring, visitors can enjoy the

apple blossoms, mushroom hunting, pho-ography, fishing, golf, gardens, off-road

vehicles and many festivals.The Christmas Festival joins several

other annual traditions in Omak, includinghe Stampede Cowboy Poetry show in

March. In May, there is the Pascal Sher-man Indian School Sunflower Fest.

The town is full of recreation options,many of them around Omaks 72-acre EastSide Park. The park includes three softballields, the Stampede and Rodeo Arena,an Olympic size pool, two soccer fields,Babe Ruth and Little League diamonds,covered picnic area, archery range, horseshoe pits, lighted tennis courts and a bas-ketball court. Add to this acres and acresof green lawn and a 72-site full hook-upRV park and tent area, and the possibilitiesor fun are many.Omak also offers the Performing Arts

Center with live entertainment or take in amovie at the Omak Cinema or one at thethree-screen Mirage Theater. Downtownthere are a variety of shops, includingbookstores, jewelers, gift shops, antiques,furnishings and other items for your home,

RiversidePaddlewheelers and brisk commerce part o its past

Perhaps one of the most important townsn Okanogan Countys early day history,Riverside is still a quaint and picturesque

own, as it sits nestled between the Oka-nogan River and State Highway 97.Riverside was once a booming com-

mercial center. As head of navigation forhe Okanogan River, goods transported

up the Columbia River and further up theOkanogan could not get past Riverside.So Riverside became an important con-nection between then isolated OkanoganCounty, and more populated areas of theregion.In celebration of the importance of

Riversides past, the community holds

RiverFest, which includes a street fair,music and community auction. The annualestival is held in early August.Paddle-wheeled steamships chugged

up the Columbia from Wenatchee, con-inuing their journey up the sometimes

barely navigable waters of the Okanogan,stopping to unload their merchandise atRiverside. Much of the valleys producealso left for other markets by way of thisifeline to the world, which was only navi-gable past Brewster for six to eight weeksof each year.

Supplies for the then booming goldmines often came up the river in this way.Freight wagons then carried the supplieso the outlying mining towns. When the

railroads arrived, the steamers becameess economical and eventually died out.Until the railroads came, Riverside washe only connection between the northern

part of the county and the rest of the state,other than an arduous journey by wagonsover primitive roads.It was originally called Republic Landing

because it was an important supply pointo the booming Republic mining camp in

Ferry County. The town became Riversiden 1900 when Pard Cummings relocatedt just below an island that had frustratedsteamboats. In 1908, the push was on tomove the county seat from Conconullyo Riverside. The competition for the dis-inction included Omak and Okanogan.

Riverside was not successful and countygovernment moved to its present dayocation in Okanogan.Several things conspired to turn River-

side into the quiet community it is today

- the railroad replaced the steamshiptrade, the grab for the county seat wasunsuccessful and the 1913 Carney fire andothers leveled the downtown area.Even when temperatures hit their highest,

Riverside always seems plush and green.Farmland still surrounds the town and abridge gives one of the few accesses tothe east side of the Okanogan River. Manyfind Riverside a pleasant place to live andcommute to jobs in Omak and Okanoganto the south, or Tonasket to the north.One of the biggest attractions to River-

side is the famous Historic Detros WesternStore; there is also a well-stocked countrystore with gas pumps and a great rustic

saloon, a gun and pawnshop and an artgallery. There are parks for picnicking andtwo RV parks for travelers.In addition, there is a boat launch with

parking area managed by the state De-partment of Natural Resources. The siteon the Okanogan River is one of the mainaccess points for the upper branch of theGreater Columbia Water Trail. Riversideis also the launching point for many whotravel up to Crawfish Lake, which has anenjoyable recreation area.

Sunday morning. Also on Sunday, kidsunder 12-years-old fly free.The Okanogan River Garlic Festival, held

in August at History Park, is one of thenewer traditions in Tonasket, but is gettingquite a following. The event attracts localfarmers selling a variety of garlics, as wellas other fresh produce and flowers.If you like to see drivers crash into one

another in an effort to demolish oneanothers cars, the Tonasket DemolitionDerby on Sunday, Sept. 6 is the placefor you. The contest is always excitingand attracts drivers and machines fromthroughout the county. There are com-petitions for both men and women andthe event is a big hit with the kids.Tonasket is intersected by state High-

way 97 and 20. Highway 97, an inter-national roadway, links the town withCanada to the north, and California onthe extreme south. Highway 20 is aneast/west route from the Pacific Coastvia the North Cascades Highway, toRepublic and Spokane.
