For decades, University Recreation has been providing a wide variety of activities that meet the needs and programming wishes of the CWU student body.

While many of our programs take place in our award-winning facility, the majority – such as Intramural Sports, Collegiate Sport Clubs, open recreation swims and outdoor trips – takes place outside of the Recreation Center. University Recreation provides access to a number

of facilities, programs and training opportunities on campus and around town.

We invite you to engage in the CWU Recreation Experience!

More than just a building …

success stories

“Personal training helped me to jump start my fitness goals and motivated me so I wouldn’t give up!”

— Breanna Lowry, CWU Exercise Science graduate and Personal Training client

“I was 30 lbs over weight and extremely out of shape. My plan was to get into shape to run a few 5ks and 10ks, and maybe a few triathlons. My personal trainer has not only gotten me in shape, but she challenges me daily with new exercises. She really makes me work for it. Thanks for pushing me back into shape – you rock ….”

— Kevin Camarillo, Personal Training client

“I signed up for personal training sessions for one reason. Before my first session with my personal trainer, I was scared. Could I do it? Would I be able to use all those intimidating machines? The answer was “Yes!” I found I could. I got stronger, lost inches, and lost a few pounds. I learned a lot about myself … I work hard, keep my commitments, and have a good attitude. I also made a new friend. My personal trainer was great in keeping me motivated and helping me be the best I can. I’d recommend personal training to anyone that wants to improve their health by working with someone one-on-one. It has been a great experience for me.”

— Staci Sleigh-Layman, director, Office for Equal Opportunity and Personal Training client

certified Personal trainer vs. trainer in trainingOur Certified Trainers have taken the necessary coursework and preparation to pass their Personal Trainer exam and may be certified by an accredited personal training organization. Passing the Personal Training examination for any of these organizations is extremely difficult. It requires a full knowledge and understanding of the human body and how it responds to exercise in multiple environments, including injury and illness. Our Certified Trainers are recognized by any fitness club in the industry as qualified fitness professionals.

Trainers in Training (TNT) are individuals who may not yet be certified, but have the knowledge base to design and implement exercise programs for healthy adults. TNTs must be junior or senior Exercise Science undergraduate students pursuing a certification and/or have experience leading individuals in exercise technique. Certified Trainers and TNTs have limited client availability, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Program PricingPersonal training services are offered to individuals who are current Recreation Center members. We strongly suggest working out individually with a trainer to achieve the most customized fitness program. However, if you are more comfortable sharing your sessions with a friend we also offer partner training packages, sold in six or 12-session packages. Just remember that when you work out with a partner, you’re sharing your training session with another person and your goals might vary. Therefore, results may vary from those experienced in individual training sessions.

Boot Camp (45 mins)Looking for a super-challenging workout? Boot Camp is where it’s at! This class combines cardio and agility drills, challenging your body on all levels. Expect sport conditioning types of intervals, while using a wide variety of equip-ment. And although this class is a tough one, all levels can enjoy a great workout, as modifica-tions are offered for all fitness levels.

Indoor Cycling (45 mins)Our indoor cycling classes are tailored to suit a wide range of abilities and fitness goals, while providing the most energizing and entertaining outdoor-inspired cycling rides. Each of our instructors teaches slightly different from the next, providing a variety of coaching styles and music selections for each class … you’re guaranteed to find a favorite! And cycling isn’t just about intense physical training. It’s a way to help you discover your own personal edge and push even farther to extend your fitness limits. Just don’t forget your water or a sweat towel, as you’ll need it! All fitness levels are welcome in this class.

Kick Interval (45 mins) This is the ultimate non-contact workout: 45 minutes of cardio kickboxing, full of drills and combos that will definitely get your blood pumping, mixed with intense strength building exercises. Fun music, easy to follow choreog-raphy and a great instructor make this class a must for your weekly workout regimen!

Lower Body Blast (45 mins)45 minutes of abs and glutes only … this class is sure to make you sweat! This intense workout will focus entirely on making those tummies and hind ends work like never before. Non-impact and efficient, you will definitely “feel the burn” and be begging for more! This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Mat Pilates (45 mins)Mat Pilates is a very user-friendly, mat-based pilates workout that promotes strength, flexibility, balance and body awareness. This super-sweaty, muscle-challenging, 45 minute toning class is based on a traditional mat based pilates workout but has added intensity and speed. You’ll sculpt a leaner, tighter body in a controlled, non-impact class and improve core strength and coordination. And don’t be surprised to use equipment in this class to assist your muscles and add variety to your pilates training. Mat Pilates is appropriate for all fitness levels and ages and is especially beneficial for those experiencing low back pain or recovering from muscle injury, as the workouts are self paced and progressive.

Power Step (45 mins)That’s right … step aerobics has returned! But we’re taking the basic step workout up a notch, by adding strength intervals to create a freakishly efficient workout for you! We’ll alternate short segments of basic step choreography with severe cardio blasts. Be prepared for a brain workout, too, as step chore-ography can be challenging. But we’ll try to keep it simple and give everyone a great workout! This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Power Yoga (45 mins)This class moves rapidly through yoga poses and sequences, increasing your heart rate and challenging your body. Using the breath to connect one posture to the next, expect to improve your balance and flexibility while giving your heart a workout and your mind a break. We’ll conclude each class with classic yoga stretching postures and a few moments of final relaxation. Fitness Yoga is a hatha style of yoga, following the principles of vinyasa, or “flow” yoga. It’s perfect for beginners and advanced yogis alike!

Restorative Yoga (45 mins)Designed to lift your physical energy and calm your mind, this slower-paced yoga class focuses on individual poses, as opposed to flowing through poses like we do in Fitness Yoga. This is a perfect class for beginning yogis, those with specific physical needs, anyone rehabbing an injury or individuals looking for a mental break from the chaos of daily life and workouts. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Total Body Conditioning (45 mins)45 minutes of straight muscle building … this will be fun! We’ll use hand weights, stability balls, benches, body bars, exer-tubing and the BOSU to sculpt strong muscles in both your upper and lower body. Think a weight room style of workout in the comfort of an enclosed fitness studio … no eyeballing or people-watching, just a straightforward workout! TBC is a great workout for everyone, as plenty of options are available for all fitness levels.

Upper Body Blast (45 mins)This class is similar to Lower Body Blast but the focus is on the arms and abs. After strength training and toning the upper body, you’ll hit the mat (or ball, or BOSU, or …) for hard core abdominal training. Be prepared to make those shoulders burn and sculpt a more defined mid-section! This class is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Zumba® (45 mins)Looking for a more motivating and flat out fun way to work out? Then Zumba is for you! This class fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow dance moves to create a workout unlike any other. The goal is simple: dance like nobody’s watching and have more fun than you’ve ever experienced in a workout class! You don’t want to miss this one! Zumba is a great workout for all ages and fitness levels and no dance experience is required.

The Collegiate Sport Club program provides students with the chance to participate in competitive sporting activities combined with abundant leadership opportunities . Previous experience is not required .

Corey Sinclair • 509-963-3516 • [email protected]

Each sport club is initiated, maintained and managed by its student members. Although the program is partially funded by services and activities fees, fundraising is also an essential component of every club.

The degree of competition varies. Some clubs compete nationally, which may require rigorous training multiple times per week throughout the year. Other clubs are more interested in the opportunity to compete, and may meet just once or twice per week.

Regardless of each club’s individual goals, our intention is to ensure these opportunities are available; to provide support that fosters leadership, organization and communication; and to manage the risk involved. Collegiate Sport Clubs staff has the privilege of meeting regularly with club officers to discuss their needs and the specific challenges each club is facing.

Club membership is not limited just to CWU students. CWU faculty, staff and community members are eligible to participate in the functions of the club; however, competition is restricted to CWU students only.
