  • primarily devoted to recorded sounds in caves, only eight tracks out of 23 are acoustic music selections, six of these (capitalized titles) are speleolithophonic pieces (speleothem percussion) and two are flute pieces. Most of the caves where different sounds were recorded are not identified, but it is possible in some cases to figure out which cave is used. The sounds of some tracks bleed over to the following track. The liner notes provide wordy French texts for each selection. These have been omitted here and replaced by summarized translations or short descriptions of the sounds heard. 1. Dernier lueur [Last Light] – sound of a river entering a cave & sound of a rossignol philomèle (nightingale) – three caves here have a stream: Gouffre de Cabrespine, Grotte de Trabuc, and Grotte de Labeil. 2. Arche naturelle [Natural Arch] – a natural arch where the sound of the pigeon biset (rock dove) is heard echoing. 3. Colonie de Minioptères de Schreiber [Colony of Schreiber Bats] – recorded several meters inside the cave where the bats are sleeping. 4. Couloir d'accès [Access Corridor] – a narrow corridor with a dry cave river bed – water drops fall on humid clay. 5. PERCUSSIONS – musician strikes different stalactites varying the rhythm and duration to obtain diverse tunes – due to position of stalactites the musician has to be a contortionist, which results in cramps. 6. L'Age d'une stalagmite [The Age of a Stalagmite] – sound of water dropping on a stalagmite. 7. RÉSONANCES – a giant triangular calcite drapery several meters long resonates in vibrato when struck with the hand. 8. Échos de rivière [River Echoes] – 400 meters from the entrance the cave stream runs along rapidly. 9. FLÛTE DE CORNE [Horn Flute] – a Medieval bone flute is heard with the cave stream behind. 10. Pluie d'hier [Yesterday's Rain] – it took two days for the rain water to penetrate 400m of rock and dribble into the cave chamber. 11. Pétales de crystal [Crystal Petals] – Recorded in the Aven Armand – after a heavy rain water drops fall 40m onto stalagmites bordered by calcite petals that tinkle at each impact. This is a truly unusual cave sound. 12. L'homme sous terre [Man Underground] – the silence of the cave is interrupted by the sounds of a passing caver. Some water drops are heard. 13. Eau souterraine [Subterranean Water] – a small waterfall and a running cave stream in a huge chamber (“as big as Notre Dame Cathedral”). 14. Profondeur [Depth] – in a pit over 100m deep where drops fall and echo loudly, some striking the floor with a loud bang. Probably in the Gouffre de Cabrespine. 15. PERCUSSIONS 2 – tapping out notes on calcite draperies, varying the rhythm. 16. Goutte à goutte [Drop by Drop] – water drops into a pool and then flows on as a trickle of water. 17. VOILE DE PIERRE [Calcite Drapery] – a hand brushes vigorously over draperies of different sizes to obtain various musical tones. 18. Près d'un siphon [Near a Siphon] – after exploring over a kilometer in the waters of the stream an impenetrable terminal siphon is reached. 19. PERCUSSIONS 3 – another piece of speleothem percussion music with variant tempos. 20. Passage étroit [Narrow Passage] – the silence is disturbed only by a few water drops hitting the floor. 21. L’EAU ET LA PIERRE [Water and Rock] – a hand hitting a small rimstone pool and a piece of wood hitting small stalagmites. 22. FLÛTE DE ROSEAUX [Reed Flute] – the reed flute plays a melody that sores to high notes in the Salle des Schistes, 400m underground. Probably in the Gouffre de Cabrespine, because we are told that this cave is developed in thin bands of Paleozoic limestone one of which is – “Calcaires noirs à plaquettes et calcschistes à entroque du Gothlando Dévonien” (Anon; n.d.) [Black limestone plaques and calcareous schist with crinoidal inclusions of the Gothlando-Devonian age.] 23. Résurgence vers la lumière [Resurgence towards the Light] – a warm air current and the song of a sirin cini (serinus serinus) bird. All four of the show caves here are located in southeastern France. Concerts have only been held in the Aven Armand. The producers of this disc were added by the managers of all four show caves. The cover photo by GGF shows the formations in the Gouffre de Cabrespine. Nature et Découvertes is a chain store in France devoted to nature and nature study. It was founded in 1990 and has 85 stores in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.     Pékinos SDP 009 (Tks 1 & 2) Notes: The liner notes tells us that – “vous allez découvir une ambiance extraordinaire, dans une petite grotte à ciel ouvert, où les gouttes d’eau qui suintent de deux stalactites tombent dans un minuscule lac artificiel alimenté par une source thermale.“ (Anon. n.d.) [You are going to discover an extraordinary ambiance in a small cave, open to the sky, where the drops of water, which seep from two stalactites drop into a miniscule artificial lake fed by a thermal spring.] The sound of water drops near and far and occasionally the high-pitched call of a bird can be heard. Now there are three reported caves in the vicinity of Châteaudouble: Grotte des chèvres (34m long), Grotte des chauves-souris (61m long), and Aven-Grotte du Mouret. (Anon. 2008) The Aven de Mouret is no “small” cave, by 1998 it had been explored by passing six siphons to a distance of well over 7 kilometers. (Anon.ca.1998) The Fichier des cavités du Var (Cave Reports for the Var Department) provide data on two small shelter caves in the commune of Châteaudouble that could be mentioned – Abri 33 and Abri 47. However, none of these caves really correspond to the above description. The presence of bat sounds on this disc seems to indicate that at least part of this CD was recorded in the Grotte des chauve-souris. See also Recordings of Bats & Cave-dwelling Birds – France. The photo showing Michele Thomas playing in guitar in the cave was probably taken near the rimstone dams, which is not near the Salle de Congrès. When I visited the Grotte de la Cocalière in May 1988 and was able to interview the cave’s director, André Marti, about music and cinema in his cave, he gave me a copy of this EP. Later I stupidly left the disc in our closed car under the hot sun causing the vinyl to melt and turning the record into a warped mess. So to get another copy I obtained the address of Michèle Thomas and she kindly sent me a one.   • Notes: Various primitive musical and percussive sounds meant to represent a modern man's conception of the music of Paleolithic times. Recorded in and inspired by the Grottes de Cougnac, near Gourdon in the Lot department of France. Tsuchitori had special authorization to perform in this cave from the French prehistorian Michel Lorblanchet. He also acknowledged assistance from other renowned prehistorians among them Jean Clottes (scientific advisor to the French Ministry of Culture and world-renowned specialist in prehistoric cave paintings), Robert Bégouën (grandson of early prehistorian Count Henri Bégouën), and Germain Viatte (Conservateur général du patrimoine français). This speleolithophonic music was no doubt performed and recorded in the “partie terminale” the last section of the cave. Studies by Michel Lorblanchet have shown that during the Paleolithic period prehistoric man probably used this part of the cave where the acoustics are perfect to “practiqué la musique par percussion,” that is to perform lithophonic music. (Jach 2011) These selections were all recorded on Nov. 21, 2002, but they waited five years before doing a mix and releasing the CD in 2008. This takes the recording well beyond the cutoff date of 2005, however, given the rarity of these attempts at recreating prehistoric cave music, an exception was made to include this creation here. Boris Jollivet probably recorded these bat sounds at the same time as those, which were released in 1999 on the Nature et Découvertes CD (see above RIC-FR1). The subtitle of this selection is “Dans la grotte de Cressia, en avril” [In the Cressia cave, in April]. The major cave near Cressia is the Grotte à Jean Mercier, which has 550 meters of total passage. "Cette grotte tire son nom d'un cordonnier vivant au XVIIIème siècle et nommé Jean Mercier. Celui-ci s'installait, l'hiver, à l'entrée de la grotte pour faire son travail. Il profitait ainsi de sa douce chaleur et faisait des économies de combustible." (Cuaz 1947) [This cave gets its name

    Notes: An LP and CD presenting a live concert in the Cathedral Chamber of the Grotte de Lombrives at Ussat les Bains in the Ariege department. Since the mid-1980s concerts have been given in this huge room on a fairly regular basis during the summer season and sometimes at Christmas time. The Salle de la Cathédrale, 250m from the entrance, is as big as the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. Lex van den Brul plays an oboe on some pieces and an oboe d’amore on other pieces (an oboe d’amore is the alto of the oboe family). Two of the pieces here were composed by van den Brul: one, “Hommage au Sabarthez,” (Homage for Sabarthes) was inspired by the Sabarthez limestone massif, which contains three caves, Grotte de Lombrives, Grotte de Niaux (the celebrated Paleolithic art cave), and Grotte de Sabart (see under Contemporary Art Music – Wind Instruments – Hommage au Sabarthez). Nearly all the pieces of oboe music on this album were inspired in some way by the people of the Cathare protestant religion. According to one legend promulgated by Antoine Gadal in the latter 19th Century, the Cathares took refuge in this cave to escape persecution in the 14th century. However, there is absolutely no historic evidence that the Cathares ever used this cave. In 1998 a piece of New Age music was composed by Daniele Garella, entited, “Dans une grotte de Sabarthés” (see under New Age Music – France). The selections include psalms arranged by Koenig and Rodrigues, 12th and 18th century music, and three pieces written by Christian Koenig, Valérie Tercinet, and Jean-Philippe Rodrigues. No mention is made anywhere on this CD that the recording was made in a cave. Christian said that he deliberately did not mention this because he feared that it would put off potential buyers who are strict melomaniacs. This is extremely moving music, performed with a great deal of feeling and passion; all is eminently suitable to the acoustics of the cave. On the occasion of the 2000 National Congress of the Fédération Française de Spéléologie, held in Tarascon sur Ariège, I set up a special stand in the venders’ hall dedicated to selling and promoting recorded cave-inspired music. The stand was called “Musique des Cavernes” because in French that sounds better than “Musique des Grottes.” It was intended as a showcase for cave music. There I sold copies of François Bayle’s CD “Jeïta” (on consignment from the composer) and several other duplicate singles, LPs, and CDs from my own collection covering all categories of cave music. There were also order forms and info regarding Mariolina Zitta’s CD “Perle di Grotta.” And even a copy of Barbara am Ende’s collection, “Cave Ballads 1972-1979,” transcribed caving ballads from the early years of the NSS Ballads Salon. I invited Christian Koenig, who lives in nearby Ussat-les-Bain, to come and sell this CD that had been recorded in the local cave. He had a sound box there playing this music and, during the weekend, he managed to sell nine copies of the CD to cavers. I didn’t do so well with the other recorded cave music.     SFA (No Catalog No.) (Tks 43 to 56) Notes: This CD accompanied the Acts of the Colloque: Acoustique et instruments anciens, which was held at the Cité de la Musique in Paris on November 17-18, 1999. These selections recorded in two Paleolithic art caves in the Ariège department were included with the Acts of this Colloque to illustrate one of the papers entitled, Grottes et lithophones [Caves and Lithophones], which was presented by Michel Dauvois and Xavier Boutillon. Michel Dauvois is a well-known prehistorian of the CNRS who has specialized in the study of Paleolithic musical instruments. “ The Réseau Clastres in the renowned Paleolithid art cave, Grotte de Niaux was cut off from the main cave by four lake-siphons that were pumped and passed in 1970. The small draperies that were used for these recordings are located in the Salle des Peintures on the sheer wall just to the right of the horse drawing.   • the otter on the left and the horse on the right. Dauvois and Boutillon write – “Des traits gravés peuvent également marquer les draperies sonores.…. Ces traces de d’appropriation de structures vibrantes font qu’on peut sans doute parler d’instruments naturels, d’autant qu’ils sont pratiquement toujours associés à des figures. Au Réseau Clastres, cette association est une des plus singulières : un cheval et un mustélidé sont dessinés dans le voisinage immédiat de deux petites draperies particulièrement sonores sur une paroi gigantesque où il n’y a par ailleurs aucun autre témoin paléolithique.“ (Dauvois & Boutillon 1999) [Engraved marks can also designate sounding draperies…. These traces of usage of vibrating structures allow us to probably speak of natural instruments, especially as they are almost always associated with figures.     Grotte de Niaux Grotte du Portel Regarding the three recordings made in the Grotte du Portel the authors write – “Au Portel, un ensemble groupé de draperies et de colonnes fait qu’on serait presque tenté de parler d’un instrument lithophonique. Certaines de ces draperies ont été entaillées dans leur partie le plus sonore par des chocs répétés et anciens, une légère calcitation recouvrant ces blessures. Certaines de ces cassures ont reçu un discret marquage ocré, calcité depuis.“ (Dauvois & Boutillon 1999) [In Portel, a group of draperies and columns are such that one is almost tempted to speak of a lithophone instrument. Some of these draperies were notched in their most sonorous part by repeated and ancient shocks, with a slight calcite deposit covering these damages.     Muséa FGBG 4303.AR (Tk 3) Notes: Only one of 13 tracks to have been recorded in the renowned Paleolithic art cave, Grotte de Pech- Merle. Notes were obtained by striking cave formations without damaging them. It is not known where exactly in the cave this recording was made, probably in the Salle Rouge (see photo), but certainly not in the prehistoric art sections. Other primitive instruments such as flutes, whistles or rhombus may have been played here as they were on the later album recorded in this cave by François Claerhout (see below). This isolated recording led to the production of an entire CD album of 16 tracks recorded in this cave and also in two caves in Spain, which was released in the summer 2001 (see below).     Notes: This is speleolithophonic music especially composed and performed in caves for a 16-minute Spanish documentary film, El Sueño del chamán – The Shaman’s Dream, released in 2001 with English subtitles. Most of the 16 tracks on this album of "prehistoric music" were recorded in the Grotte de Pech-Merle in France. But apparently some unspecified tracks were also recorded at Cueva de Altamira and Cueva del Castillo in Cantabria, Spain. Track 16. MURMULLO DE VIDA (Invisible Presence) – This is nothing more than a few water drops falling in the cave, then the distant muffled voices of a man and a kid talking in the cave passage. The indistinguishable voices approach (the man sounds like he's saying, "Je ne sais pas" – "I don't know") and then the voices recede into the distance and the water drops return again. Since then cave divers have penetrated 1200m to a depth of –15m. (Anon. 2010) Also included on this album is a long recording entitled "La Sorgue." This large stream, practically a river, has its source at the cave resurgence of the Fontaine de Vaucluse but the recording was apparently not made at the source itself. The French painter Gustave Courbet, who was a native of nearby Ornans, did 14 different oils of this cave resurgence. The last track returns to the underworld of the cave similar to the first track with a distant drop echoing in the cave and other assorted drops and trickles.   • The first track, Promenade aquatique [Aquatic Promenade], begins with the sound of water drops near and far falling into pools and echoing in what is presumably a cave chamber. The frequency of the drops increases. Then the sound of an approaching storm with thunder rumbling is heard in the background until the water drops morph into rain falling outside. The second track, Aquaviva, starts out identically only this time with light synthesizer music in the background. There is no information on where these sounds were recorded.   • Notes: The title translates as "blowhole in a cave." The liner notes say – “L’erosion attaque les falaises et creuse parfois des grottes où l’eau peut s’engouffrer, faire pression et sortir en giclant comme un souffle de baleine.“ [The erosion attacks the cliffs and sometimes carves out caves where the water penetrates, is compressed, and escapes by spouting up like a whale's blowhole.] We hear continuous sounds of dashing waves churning around in a cave and occasionally the whirring sound of water rushing up out of the blowhole. The notes briefly indicate that this cave blowhole is at Étretat. The paleo-karst geology at Étretat is fascinating and there are many solution caves and natural arches (cave remnants) in the chalk cliffs there. Shown in the color photo above on left (from lt. to rt.): Trou à l’Homme (52m), two tiny caves, and Porte d’Aval.

    Given the description it would seem that the blowhole cave in question is the small cave that traverses the pillar of the Manneporte arch at Étretat. Regarding this arch, Rodet (see his map on left) notes that – “un autre conduit traverse entièrement le pilier. Noyé à marée haute, il présente cependant une morphologie karstique, malgré les coups de boutoir que lui infligent les vagues à marée basse.“ (Rodet 1983) [Another conduit extends entirely through the pillar. Submerged at high tide, it nevertheless has a karst morphology,

    despite the battering which the waves inflict at low tide.] The small cave tunnel at Manneporte is not technically a blowhole, but at low tide with rough seas it could produce the sounds heard here.     Auvidis/ Tempo A 6203 (Tk 5) Notes: The sound of waves in an unidentified sea cave probably somewhere on the French coast. The sound of crashing waves from the previous sample blends right into the sounds of smaller waves slopping around inside a sea cave. When the wave ebbs we hear water dribbling from the cave rocks and a slight echo. Between waves there is quiet gurgling water with the roar of the heavy rollers in the distance. An occasional larger spent wave crashes in the echoing cave passage. At the end the waters in the cave are calm and the sound blends over into the next sample of waves on a rough pebble shore. Jean-Paul Bataille worked on at least 17 different albums for the Auvidis/ Tempo label.

(Tk 1) Notes: An album of field recorded soundscapes. This first track features a recording of a guide taking people on a tour of a cave in the Pyrenees where prehistoric paintings are visible. (Menter n.d.) One critic wrote in The Wire – “In what has to be one of the oddest opening tracks on any album, Will Menter’s ‘Above And Below Ground Level’ starts with a tourist guide leading her charges deep into a French cave. The guide’s singsong voice and the shuffling, whispering tourists underline the cavernous ambience. Then the guide invites us to contemplate the Palaeolithic paintings in silence, and for forty seconds or so we listen to exactly that. ‘It needs a special kind of listening that is not very evident,’ explains Menter on the phone from his home in central France. ‘I was trying to frame the silence at the end of the track, to build up to a situation where the listener is forced to use their visual imagination to conjure up what is happening. Anyway, the idea was to make this track inform the way the rest of the CD was listened to – so that was why I put it first.’ ” (Bell 2003) All the Paleolithic art show caves are on the French side of the Pyrenees and there are six of them starting in the west and moving east: Grottes de Isturitz & d’Oxocelhaya, Gargas, Mas d’Azil, Bédeilhac, La Vache, and the celebrated Grotte de Niaux. It is not known which cave was used for this recording. Other underground sounds on the album were recorded in the vaulted cellar of the medieval Cluny Abbey in Paris. Track 8 on this CD is entitled, “The Guiding Song,” but it is not known if this is the guide at the Paleolithic art cave visit or the one at Cluny Abbey.
