Later he needed more room, so he wrote “I set myself to enlarge my cave and works farther into the earth, for it was a loose sandy rock, which yielded easily to the labour I bestow’d on it; and so when I found I was pretty safe as to beasts of prey, I work’d sideways to the right hand into the rock, and then turning to the right again, work’d quite out and made me a door to come out, on the outside of my pale or fortification… I went on, and working every day, as my strength and time allow’d, I spent eighteen days entirely in widening and deepening my cave, that I might hold my goods commodiously.” After erecting a stockade in front and fortifying it with rifles he eventually called this cave his “Castle.” Later, in his 23 rd year of residence on the island, Robinson found “a meer (sic) natural cave in the earth, which went in a vast way, and where, I dare say, no savage, had he been at the mouth of it, would so hardly as to venture in… I was curious to look into it, and getting wit h difficulty into the mouth of it, I found it was pretty large; that is to say, sufficient for me to stand upright in it, and perhaps another with me.” Then in the dark he thought he saw the eyes of a creature, but it turned out to be a reflection. So he took a firebrand and started exploring, only to hear a loud sigh, which he found was due to an old he-goat in the cave. Continuing he came to a place where he had to crawl on hands and knees, so he turned back.

STORY BACKGROUND:

Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719, is a fictional autobiography of the title character. Crusoe leaves the safety of his comfortable middle-class home in England and goes to sea. He is shipwrecked and becomes a castaway who spends 28 years on remote tropical island 50 miles southeast of Trinidad.

In the original story, after Robinson Crusoe has shipwrecked and managed to recover a great deal of useful material from the ship, he finds a cave of sorts. “On the side of this rock there was a hollow place worn a little way in like the entrance or door of a cave, but there was not really any

cave or way into the rock at all.” He set up a large tent in front of this shelter cave and then proceeded to work his way into the rock and enlarge the cave. Later he needed more room, so he wrote – “I set myself to enlarge my cave and works farther into the earth, for it was a loose sandy rock, which yielded easily to the labour I bestow’d on it; and so when I found I was pretty safe as

to beasts of prey, I work’d sideways to the right hand into the rock, and then turning to the right again, work’d quite out and made me a door to come out, on the outside of my pale or fortification… I went on, and working every day, as my strength and time allow’d, I spent eighteen days entirely in widening and deepening my cave, that I might hold my goods commodiously.” After erecting a stockade in front and fortifying it with rifles he eventually called this cave his “Castle.”

Later, in his 23rd year of residence on the island, Robinson found “a meer (sic) natural cave in the earth, which went in a vast way, and where, I dare say, no savage, had he been at the mouth of it, would so hardly as to venture in… I was curious to look into it, and getting with difficulty into the mouth of it, I found it was pretty large; that is to say, sufficient for me to stand upright in it, and perhaps another with me.” Then in the dark he thought he saw the eyes of a creature, but it turned out to be a reflection. So he took a firebrand and started exploring, only to hear a loud sigh, which he found was due to an old he-goat in the cave. Continuing he came to a place where he had to crawl on hands and knees, so he turned back.

The next day he returned with six goat tallow candles and got through a 10-yard crawlway that opened out into a nice room 20-feet high, where “the walls reflected 100 thousand lights to me from my two candles.” This formation “grotto” had a dry flat floor of gravel. He decided it was a good “place of security,” which he could use for storing powder and spare arms.

Some people think Daniel Defoe’s story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for over four years on a Pacific island belonging to Chile called Más a Tierra (later renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in the Juan Fernandez Islands).

Daniel DEFOE The performances listed below were all

intended for children. Robinson Crusoe, is an adult novel, but in these treatments for children the story has been abridged and oriented specially to appeal to the younger imagination.

Presumably all the performances released on one LP album will mention the finding and enlarging of the cave and the scenes that take place in it. It will be referred to as a “cave” (grotte, höhle, or ְמָעָרה) even though it is a man-made cave. However, the scenes in the long formation grotto will probably only be mentioned in the longer abridged albums of 2 or 3 CDs.

In West Germany, during the 1970s, there was a huge demand for children’s spoken word recordings and no less than 6 LP records of Robinson Crusoe were released at that time.

Several very abbreviated performances have been released on 45rpm and 33rpm extended play vinyl in English and French, but these will not be included here because they would only make very brief mention of the cave or might not mention it at all.

There are four unabridged performances in English, released between 1995 and 2005 (see under Spoken Word – Adult Fiction – Prose English - Adventure).
