BRIAN EPSTEIN, enthusiastic and energeticbrain behind the powerful NEMS Enterprises

concern, announced exciting plans for Gerry andthe Pacemakers on Monday of this week.

G err y, with threenumber one single hitsto his credit andanother potentialwinner in "I'm theone", is to star in aforthcoming film withthe Pacemakers. Hewill also fly to Americafor television appear-ances.

Production of thefilm will be handled byBrian Epstein withGeorge Ornstein whohave formed a companyto be known as SubaFilms Ltd. The UnitedArtists company, whoare already handlingthe Beatles film pro-jects, will also be in-volved in the distribu-tion of the finishedproduct.

Plans have beenafoot to feature Gerryin films for quite awhile, but the searchfor the ideal formula tolaunch his scree ncareer has only justended.

Tony Warren, devi-ser of "CoronationStreet", the highlysuccessful televisionseries, is to handle thefilm script. The back-ground will be Gerry'shome -town of Liverpooland the bulk of thelocation work will becarried out on Mersey-side, starting in mid -May.

The film will be amusical with plenty oforiginal material beingwritten for the groupto perform throughoutthe plot.

As yet the film is un-titled.

Gerry's Americantrip will be in the formof two televisionappearances. He isscheduled for the top-

rated "Ed SullivanShow" from New Yorkon May 3 and 10 res-pectively. This is theshow on which theBeatles make theirAmerican debut shortly.

"Criticism, yes. But fromPeggy Lee FANS. Most ofthe younger buyers just don'tknow about Peggy Lee, so itcame up as a new numberfor them."

Manager Alan Paramorcame in to say: "With thecoming of the group scene,we had to think about re-modelling Helen. We didn'twant to make her sound likea one - girl Ronettes' group,but something different WASneeded."

So now Helen waits. She'dlike a big hit disc, no ques-tion of that. But hearingabout her career, generally,1 realised she's way out ofthe category whicn positivelyREQUIRES a hit to keepgoing.

tural import. Said Helen: "Igot fan letters and Christmascards from people in Russiaand Poland."

Remember that she'salready toured in: the States,South Africa, Canada, Israel,Australia, New Zealand,France, Germany, Sweden,Holland, Italy. Malta is onthe short list -for a visit -"we get a lot of letters fromthere."

All this -and she's still ateenager!

Watch her work. She copeswith blues, Beatle-songs like"I saw him standing there,""What'd I say" - and ofcourse, the controversial"Fever."

Cabaret has given moresuccess and maturity to thisalready astonishingly maturegirl. She's always eager totalk music, music, music.And she's only too aware ofthe fickleness of the popscene, where a slipped discdraws the knock -commen-tators like bees round theold honey -pot.

Whether "Fever" ceases it'syo-yo-ing and starts go-go-ingis obviously important. ToHelen, her management, herfans.

But if she never madeanother disc, I reckon she'dstill earn a fortune workingthe show -spots . . . of thewhole pershin' world.

ONE of the mystery menof the U.S. recording

scene is currently here inBritain following the inter-ests of his artistes. His nameis Phil Spector, and by nowjust about everyone inter-ested in the recording scenewill have heard of this off-beat young record producer.He's appeared in "Ready -Steady -Go" and "Juke BoxJury"-in the latter he spokewith disarming frankness-and to my mind truth.

Phil is the owner of thetop U.S. record companyPhilles, and for two yearson and off he has been pro-ducing discs by the Crystals,Bob. B. Soxx and the BlueJeans, Darlene Love andmore recently the Ronettes.Yet the story of Phil Spectorhimself, his sound and hissuccess is more interestingthan any of his artistes.

BROKE UPPhil started off some five

or more years ago when heformed a singing groupcalled the Teddy Bears. Their"To Know Him Is To LoveHim" has since become apop standard - Phil wroteboth sides of the disc too.The flip "Don't You WorryMy Little Pet" was a con-fused compulsive rocker, theopposite in style to the topside.

"I guess that was the be-ginning of my 'instrumental

flip' idea," Phil told mejokingly. "After that thegroup broke up, and the girllead singer continued on herown, although we let heruse the group name. 'OhWhy' was her release."

"I left the recording scenefor several years then, andstudied law. I also travelledaround quite a lot and in1961 together with someother guys we formed Phillesrecords. The first disc was"There's No Other" by theCrystals. It was a big hit inthe States and so was the.follow-up "Uptown." Butthen I drifted away forseveral months, workingfree-lance for many big re-cord labels like Liberty, etc.I came back and bought mypartners out, and from thenon I really got the set-upgoing."

Discs like "He's A Rebel,""He's Sure The Boy I Love,""Da Doo Ron Ron" and"Then He Kissed Me" were

hits for the Crystals on bothsides of the Atlantic whilePhil added to his stable withBob B. Soxx and the BlueJeans who hit it with theirfantastic "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Why Do LoversBreak Each Others Hearts."Darlene Love and The Ron-ettes followed, all with hugehits yet the amazing thingis that so far only FIFTEENdiscs have been issued byPhilles.

GIMMICKS"My belief is that every

disc issued should be a hit.Big labels put out hundredsof discs, but every one I putout I intend for the charts.People are amazed by mymeasure of success. The bigrecord companies strive toget the Phil Spector soundand it gets very farcical.

"Our recording sessionsare more like parties. Wehave sandwiches, drink, andwe sit around laughing andchatting. But we work,we work hard. The girlsand I really try on thesediscs. Some, most sessionsgo great - one sessionwe cut "He's A Rebel" and"Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." Butmy theory is that unlessthere's something worth re-cording don't record. I'dsooner wait six months andcome up with a good discrather than bring out regularmediocre discs. That's whyBob B. Soxx haven't had arelease lately.

PROUD"When we started, there

was just the girls and I. Nooffice staff, no advertising,no nothing. We were success-ful purely on the strengthof our discs. I'm proud ofthat.

"Why do I put instru-mentals on the flip.? Severalreasons. The main one isthat I like to give_value-for-money singles. I think thatif the flip is inferior to thetop side, it's bad. Ratherthan make an inferior flipside I'd sooner have mystudio musicians do an in-strumental. And do youknow what? When I firststarted doing this, some pro -motors thought that the girlsmust be superb musicians.When they wanted to bookthem they said `. . . andtell them to bring their in-struments.' Ronettes could be very bighere in Britain. I don't knowwhy my artistes should be sobig here when generallyAmerican discs are reallyout, but I think I'm tuningin more to British tastesnow - that's why I'm with-drawing the Crystals "LittleBoy," because I don't thinkit is suitable for the markethere" (see last week's storyin R.M.).

Phil Spector's advertisinggimmick. Used in all histrade mag ads he says itcontrasts well with otherads! He drew it himself.

ABOUT THE GAMBLERSBILLY FURY emerged from the gloom, and

brushed away a jungle -creeper, paused re-flectively as two alligators swam a jaw -snappingcourse through a stream. A parakeet let out ashriek of anguish. A monkey chattered in-cessantly.

Bill on Safari? Well, yes-in a way. He wasactually holding a little party to launch his newbacking group, The Gamblers. And the shindigwas held in the fantastic Beachcomber Room ofLondon's Mayfair Hotel.

Said Bill: " You know I'mnot with the Tornados anymore. Well, the problem offinding the right outfit toback me took a bit of sortingout. But Larry first heard ofthese boys and said hewanted me to go along andsort of work out with themat a rehearsal.

" Soon as I heard them, Iknew they'd be right forme. They're very versatile-That's the important point.And they get a good soundon the vocal side as well asinstrumentally. I'm knocked

out with this bunch of New-castle lads.

" Anyway, you'll hear themin a minute of two. I thinkthey're a bit nervous, givinga show like this in themiddle of the afternoon, butyou'll see how good they are.I'm nervous, too. I'm not

singing with them, but I'vegot to do the compere bitand introduce them. Don'tlaugh!"

But Billy also took amoment to consider thescene. The general popscene. He said: " You knowI've always liked doing goodsongs-the R and B sort ofstuff. I did some on thatL.P. with The Tornados.Now the trend is towardsthat sort of thing, which suitsme fine. You know, it sortof gives me a head start on

it. It's the sort of musicwhich has always appealedto me, though I don't wantto miss out on the better sortof ballad, either."

Just one more point: "Thatfilm business? Well, we'dhoped to fit one in beforethe summer season at GreatYarmouth. Now we'll justhave to wait until later . .

But I'm dead keen on gettingback to the film scene. Still,I keep quiet about contractsand that sort of thing. OftenI've said something without

checking with Larry-andbang! Something goes wrongwith it."

Billy marched off, hunch -shouldered. And said fromthe stage: " Now it givesme great pleasure to intro-duce my new group, TheGamblers." The David Jacobs'bit over, Bill joined a partyat one of the tables andclapped as the six boystrooped on.

A full-blooded sound, withinteresting vocal work. Theoccasional touch of comedy- and the most impressivething the way they switchedinstruments and vocalsounds. Three differentgamblin' men took leads.

ApplauseMaybe nervous, but they

looked as if they were enjoy-ing themselves, with plentyof smiles and "acting out"of numbers.

They sloped off, with.applause from Press menringing in the ears. Thenposed for pictures by theside of those hungry -lookingalligators.

Said Billy: " Great aren'tthey? They will be doingtheir own act as well asbacking me. They're ex-perienced, too. Did years atthe Majestic Ballroom, inNewcastle. They're off nowfor a stay in Germany, thengo into ballroom dates inBritain. We'll be togetherfor the season in Yarmouth."

The Gamblers' Decca re-lease is " You really got ahold on me," backed with"Can I see you tonight."

And Billy left. Another"safari" successfully nego-tiated.

Yes it's the Ronettes, those three lovelysongstresses who created quite a stir whenthey appeared on the AR -TV show "They SoldA Million" last week. The disc which sold amillion was of course their first disc "Be mybaby," which made the top five here, and thenumber one spot in the States. Although theyhave flown back to the States their follow-up

"Baby I love you" is still rising. Still here isPhil Spector, their manager and record pro-ducer-there's an R.M. feature on him onpage 4 this week in which he reveals somesurprising facts about the Ronettes.

HE Pop scene moves fast.Very fast, indeed. Styles

come and go, and hitmakerswith even more frequency.An artiste may be at thetop one year and be downthe next. He or she may beat the top for years in factand one day find that he orshe means nothing. Nonames needed as examples.

But there's one name thatwill always be prominent inthe pop scene. Prominent notonly on fans lips and in theirminds but also in the charts.The big question is how onearth can Buddy Holly con-tinue to be one of the mostpopular artistes in the worlda full five years after histragic and untimely death?How can his discs waxedfive, six, seven, or eightyears ago still make thecharts, still sound up-to-date,when his pop contemporariesof the time sound out -datedand crude?

QUALITYAnd the biggest question

of all is why does everyonelike Buddy Holly. Pop, R &B, C & W, Jazz fans all likeBuddy. Genuinely like him.There are few boys or girlswho aren't fans in onedegree or another of Buddy.Whenever the name Holly ismentioned you hear one oftwo comments.

WELL ALL OVER THE WORLD?

buy every Holly release. It'sno use saying 'regardless ofquality'. Even non -Holly fansadmit that his standard isunusually high. That's onereason for his success.

In all of Buddy's discs,there can't be more thanhalf a dozen that could becalled sub -standard. Andeven on these the fault lieswith the backing or thesong, not with Buddy. EveryHolly flip side has been of anincredibly high standard.None have been much worsethan the too side. Most havebeen as good - a few better.His few L.P's are a joy tolisten to and all his discshave been carefully andtactfully released by Coral -despite some accusations tothe contrary.

Many of today's youngrecord buyers don't remem-ber the days when Buddywas alive. The hey -day ofrock when at one time Buddyand the Crickets had no lessthan four discs in our toptwenty. They toured herewith immense success andless than a year later - aphenomenally successful year

-Buddy was killed. His firstposthumous hit "It Doesn'tMatter Anymore" soldmillions and has sincebecome a standard. InBritain his success has beenphenomenal - only last yearBuddy scored with anothertop five entries. The Corallabel must exist on BuddyHolly for no other artisteshave hits on that label.

HITSIn the States Buddy's

singles all do reasonably wellwithout making the charts.But his L.P's all sell fan-tastically well - "BuddyHolly Story" Volume 1 hasbeen on the charts for noless than 160 weeks! And his"Reminiscing" album shotup to the top few L.P'sabout a year ago. His fanclubs in every land are

booming and everyone con-nected with Buddy in hislifetime remembers him withaffection. He is spoken ofalmost in awe by people likeTrini Lopez, Dave Brubeckand Roy Orbison - allstaunch Holly admirers. Thefans who saw him in Britainknow they have witnessed apriceless experience. But sofar no-one has managed toobtain any film of Buddydespite many efforts to doSO.

Buddy's manager NormanPetty so far has still sometracks to release. We haveno doubt he will give Buddy'sfans the best deal possible-as he always has done. Andbetween them, Norman Petty,the millions of Buddy Hollyfans all over the world andall Buddy's friends andrelations have showed theworld that Buddy was one ofthe greatest musical talentsthat ever lived. A man whorose above any petty fad orcraze to produce some of thegreatest pop records in theworld, and a host of faithfulfans who will be his fansuntil the day they die.

BUDDY HOLLY. There are still some eleven tracks due to be issued by Norman Petty-all of them superb well -produced numbers. The tapes are already in Britain and should

be issued soon.

repetitive in the nicest possiblesense. Not a strong song for Pet,who can handle better materialthan this but the commercialismof it could give her her first bighit for quite a while. Watch it.Flip is a typical sounding beatballad with Pet in excellent vocalform.

A POLISHED commercial num-ber from Lee, who deserves

to get a big hit. Very catchyand well -performed with loadsof appeal. Maybe not quitewith that certain something tomake it into the big hit heneeds, but nevertheless there's agood beat and much more pro-fessional quality than most Merseytype discs. Flip has excellentguitar once again, and again Leeis ably supported by the All -Stars. Probably more commercialthan side one.

rvHIS girl is always pretty con-sistent. There's a busy Latintype backing on the song,

which moves along very well in-deed. She sings well, and althoughthis won't be a big hit a load ofpeople are going to like this one.Climax, and lushy strings makethis a listenable number. Flipcomes from the film "The Ser-vant" and maybe it should havebeen the top side seeing what plugsit has had. It's a smooth gentleballad with Cleo on top of hervocal form.

CHART CHATTER

QUITE a lot of fast movers this week. Newies include Cliffand Cilia Black who looks like having a huge hit with herdisc. Brenda Lee makes a surprise jump it:1-Q the top five,

while Manfred Mann continue their fast upward climb. TheBachelors better their last few discs with "Diane" which leapsinto the top ten, and the Merseybeats prove themselves to be theonly efficient ballad group from the 'pool. The Ronettes are stillgradually climbing-due no doubt to the excellent publicity theyhave been receiving as well as their excellent disc.

Other newies are Ken Dodd with his folksy "Eight By Ten," anda return of the Four Pennies with their "Do You Want Me To."We predict there'll he a lot snore newies next week though. RickNelson looks like having his second top twenty hit on the troton Brunswick, his new label. He's only one place away now.

On the EP scene the Rolling Stones take over from the Beatlesmonopoly with their disc, but maybe it's not for long. For "AllMy Loving" streaks in this week. And the phenomenal ChuckBerry scores with yet another collection of oldies "The Best OfChuck Berry." They really are too!

L.P's. Voted the secondmost popular group inBritain. But maybe themost mysterious. Sohere's the full gen onLiverpool's Searcherswith one individualSearcher spotlightedper week for a month.

Here's the first. John Mc-Nally. The original founder -member of the group. Hewas born and bred in thegood old town of Liverpooland made his first appear-ance in this world onAugust 31st, 1942. Unlike allthe other members of theteam John wasn't interestedin music at an early age. Infact to quote his own words,"I couldn't have cared less."But one day while he waswatching the telly some-thing struck him.

'OH BOY'"It was the show 'Oh Boy.'

You know, the Jack Goodbeat show on ITV. Theydon't have shows like thatnow you know . . . Well, Isaw these artiste s, andlistened to the music and itstruck me that this wassomething that I would liketo do. Make rock and roll.Then, the idea of a groupwasn't really in my mindyou know.

"That was because thenthere just weren't anygroups as we know them.There were people likeTommy Steele and that lot.But no groups. I bought my -

self a cheap guitar andlearned a few chords. I didn'thave anywhere to playthough, so I used to knockaround our street corner.There would be a gang ofus, all playing and singing.

"Liverpool didn't used tohave any of the clubs thenthat it has now. There wasno -where to go except thestreets. That was where Imet Mike Prendergast. Heused to play in the streetstoo. But on the other corner!So we joined up and for afew months we'd knockaround the pubs and hishouse-he had an electricguitar, just playing for kicks-and drinks. We met upwith some others kickingaround the pubs. We've hada lot of group changes inour time - mainly in theearly days. Then, we hadJohnny Sandon singing withus. But it was in a pubcalled the Cross Keys thatwe teamed up with TonyJackson.

us. And last year we weren'teven in the top 20 Liverpoolgroups! That's why it cameas such a shock to us whenwe were voted the secondmost popular group. That'sthe best thing that's hap-pened to us really. It meansa lot, like our first hit did.

FLAMENCOJohn himself is a well-built

blonde -haired lad who playsrhythm guitar with thegroup. His musical likes areRoy Orbison, the earlyShadows and Buddy Holly.And he'd like very much tobe able to play theharmonica.

"What I really like isFlamenco music. But justthe Spanish guitar. I can'tstand all the stamping feetand castanets. Just theguitar. I'd like to go toSpain too. For a holidaythat is, because eventuallyI want to settle down justoutside of Liverpool. Liver-pool's the place for me, andwhat I don't like about Lon-don is the Show Businessscene. Everyone's out for allthey can get. It's not forme."

Like a lot of Liverpud-lians, John supports Everton.Both he and Tony like togo on Saturday afternoonswhenever they can. Familywise nothing has changedvery much. His parents likethe job he does now. Theytend to say to him "I don'tlike that record that's beat-ing your one. Yours is best."He's pleased and proudwhenever he sees the Search-ers name in the charts, andlike all the others takes amajor interest in their discs.To him their records areeverything. His life.
