Students and teachers are celebrating the best ever performance in the school’s history. 63% of students achieved five GCSE or equivalent A*-C passes across the school (21% increase on 2008) and 50% of students achieved five A*-C GCSE’s or equivalent including Maths and English (a staggering 56% increase on last year). Between them the students attained a marvellous 209 passes at A* or A grade representing 19% of all grades achieved. The school also saw a significant improvement in the number of higher grade passes (A*-B) for its students and outperformed targets agreed with the Local Authority for the 2008/2009 academic year. Headteacher Charlie Currie comments: “The Governors and I are incredibly proud of these students, their teachers and support staff. The results say so much more about our school than a record breaking performance – they are testament to our committed students and the high quality teaching and learning that have become our hallmark. Our school has markedly improved in recent years and our students’ outstanding academic performance is the very best way to showcase this.” Harrow Way also saw a significant improvement in the performance of its most able students which demonstrates, amongst other things, the impact of the school’s rigorous Gifted and Talented student programme. This emphasises the importance of the school’s success in challenging and extending its most able students and drawing the highest level of academic attainment. As a specialist Maths and Computing school the 2009 examination results also underpin the school’s confidence that ICT and Maths are well placed to lead sustained whole school improvement. Charlie Currie concludes: “I feel a real affinity with this Year Group – they and I joined Harrow Way at the same time five years ago and I am therefore particularly delighted and proud of their success. Teachers, support staff and Governors continue to work relentlessly towards further improving academic performance, enrichment, resources and facilities within the school. The commitment of our students and their parents reflect the consistently high performance outcomes at Harrow Way.” Other evidence of a school very much on the up is the number of families each year who make Harrow Way their preferred choice of secondary school for their child. In the last 5 years the school has seen an 80% increase in the number of families making the school their first choice.” 7

Record Breaking GCSE Performance at Harrow Way School

“Harrow Way Community School continues to build on its reputation for rapidly improving standards by achieving record breaking GCSE results. Students and teachers are celebrating the best ever performance in the school’s history.

This highly successful course (100% pass rate) was introduced in September 2005 and led to students being awarded a diploma which is equivalent to four GCSEs (grade ‘C’ and above).
