Camera Installation

We mentioned it in last week’s bulleting, but our new camera system deserves a fuller mention.

The background: After discussions with the Finance Council, the parish

decided to make a church camera system the focus of our first iGiveCatholic campaign. Fr. Paul had explored this possibility during his time, but with other financial concerns decided it would be unwise. Truthfully. I thought it was a worthwhile purpose but had no idea what the iGiveCatholic response would be. It was overwhelming, allowing us to quickly work with the archdiocesan IT Office to make the installation a reality.

The product: We have 4 indoor/outdoor 3-megapixel cameras installed in the church, focusing on the entrance doors. They are connected to an 8-channel NVR, which saves about a week’s worth of recording before taping over itself. The cameras are IP powered and networked, meaning they are viewable from office computers or even my phone.

The biggest challenge in the project was running the cable. Msgr. Castel encouraged St. Rita Parish to build a church that would last — and it has. But our brick and mortar make Ethernet cable running difficult. The cabling was done via crawl spaces and the attic — and with a very large drill. They did very nicely.

The project worked out so well that we have funds to explore another similarly sized work. I have thoughts I will be discussing with the Finance Council (a wireless hearing system for those who are hearing impaired, a rail for some of our ministers to more easily enter the sanctuary — to name two), but your ideas are most welcome. Please speak to a member of the Finance Council.

We also will discuss with the Pastoral Council the opportunities these cameras now give us — for ministry, of course. We’ll leave the spying to the CIA and the Russians!

Morning of Reflection For Liturgical Ministers

On Saturday, January 28th from 9:00am-12:00pm, St. Rita will

host a “Morning of Reflection” for all Liturgical Ministers in the

church. Dr. Tom Neal, a professor of Spirituality at Notre Dame

Seminary, will lead the time of prayer, seeking to engage the

meaning behind our various ministries and the connection they

bring to our parish community and our God.

While this morning will conclude with a refresher training for

Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Hospitality Ministers, Ushers,

Altar Servers, and Music Ministers, it is open to all in the parish. Dr. Neal is an

engaging presenter who can help any Catholic in reflecting on the meaning of our

service. And if you’re interested in a ministry, this would be a great opportunity to

learn more about it. Consider joining us for this time for personal and parish reflection.

Calendar TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter!

Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single

liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter

Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast,

not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them.

A fifth-century pope explained that the church imitated the

apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of

Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden.

Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so

eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This

was the first step toward today's shape of the Triduum, and

gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the

cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word

remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did

not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had

that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people

received Communion under both species. Although the custom of

Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the

Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and

disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no

seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most

priests could only manage to celebrate a simple "low" Mass, and

few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest

through the complex forms. Holy Week remained important in

private devotion, but for a time the liturgies virtually disappeared.

OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Consider praying especially on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people

of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and

love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war,

disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father,

with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the

battle of today against violence, murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may

build a community founded on the values of Jesus,

which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they more form their children in

faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be

peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those

who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a

voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may

be a holy family.
