Diocese has received $47,000 toward our goal of $100,000.

325 families in our parish have now given $77,000 to the Catholic Sharing Appeal,

which funds many important ministries in our Diocese of Laredo. We are now a little over 72% of the way to our goal! If every family made some contribution, we can

reach our goal. If you have not yet made your pledge, please do so today. Forms are

available in the church and in the parish office. Thank you!

FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.

“Las Posadas commemorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. When they were unable to find lodging in Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary were forced to seek shelter in a stable, where the Christ Child was born” (Las Posadas, The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Las-Posadas). As a child, I recall taking long walks during the posadas and singing and seeing the little kids dress up as the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, etc. I grew up with the songs and the prayers, but it never crossed my mind that some Catholics are not familiar with the posadas. The posadas take place from December 16th until the 24th. It is customary to have a Mass and for the posada to take place at the parish or at somebody’s home. “The group representing the Holy Family stands outside a series of houses, singing songs and asking for lodging. They are refused time and again until the group reaches the designated house. Finally, the travelers are permitted to enter. Prayer and song continue in the home, and festive foods are shared. The evening ends with a piñata in the shape of star” (Heffron, Las Posadas: A Mexican Christmas Tradition, https://www.franciscanmedia.org/las-posadas-a-mexican-christmas-tradition/).

Although Christmas is near, let us reflect on the Coming of our Lord Incarnate as the Baby Jesus. The posadas are a good reminder of how our Lord was born in a manger, but regardless of where He was born, He is still the King of Kings. Let us remind ourselves that we are also awaiting His Second Coming. When He returns we will be reunited with our family and friends who have passed away and share in the Banquet of the Lord. “Las Posadas isn’t about being somber and still during Christmas: It’s about pilgrims and a pilgrimage, rousing song, prayer and deep faith—all of it in motion” (Heffron, 1). Let us eagerly await the Coming of the Lord!

PARISH & MINISTRY NEWS

Dear Santa Claus, My friends are already having

Christmas parties, but the priest at our church says that this is

really a special time called Advent, when we should prepare

our hearts for Christmas. I don’t want to wait until

December 25th.

I want to celebrate Christmas NOW! Love, Virginia

Dear Virginia, I know how you feel, because I also love to celebrate Christmas! You know me as “Santa Claus,” but my real name is Saint Nicholas. I was a bishop of a place called Myra, about 300 years after the birth of Jesus. I loved Jesus so much that I dedicated my life to telling people about Him, and I tried to follow His example by helping those who were poor. That is how the tradition started about me going around and giving presents to everybody. It’s nice to give presents, and it’s nice to receive presents, but we must not forget whose birthday we are celebrating! The true meaning of Christmas is found in the little stable in Bethlehem where God loved us so much that He chose to be born into our world as a little baby, to save us from our sins! Since God loves us so much, wouldn’t you want to give Jesus a very special gift on His birthday? He doesn’t need toys or clothes or a new cellphone. But what would make Jesus very happy is if your heart is full of love for Him and for your family and for everyone! That is why Advent is so important. It is a special time to try to take out of our hearts whatever Jesus doesn’t like: anger, selfishness, jealousy, and all the bad stuff. That is why it is a good idea to go to Confession during Advent. Then we try to make our hearts more loving by being extra nice to everybody, and helping more around the house and praying for anybody who needs help. If you do these things in the few days we have before Christmas, you will have a more loving heart for Jesus on His birthday! Before you know it, Christmas will be here, and then you can celebrate

the birth of Jesus for 12 days! - Love, St. Nicholas

P.S. Jesus would be very happy if you were nicer with your little brother!

Eucharist. The Holy Mass. For Catholics, this is often a sacrament they’ve participated in nearly every week of their lives. For non-Catholics, it is a foreign rite that many are cautious to approach. In both groups there is a varied understanding of the Eucharist and what the Church teaches about this sacrament, described as the “source and summit of the Christian life.” Over the course of this study, Dr. Brant Pitre will take us back to the biblical roots of the Eucharist. Together we’ll see how this sacrament is deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture. We’ll explore its origins, its foreshadowing in the many mysterious and miraculous events of the Old Testament and gospels, and the essential purpose and reality of Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper. In the end, we’ll examine how the Eucharist is not just a something, but rather Someone with whom we are meant to be in communion. Class dates: Thursdays, January 9 - March 12, 2020 Class time: 7PM - 8:30PM Workbook required - $10 cost per workbook (spouses can share workbook) Number of classes: 10 Registration Deadline: Friday January 3, 2020 *If you have any questions on the course please contact Carlos Guzman at 210-316-5950. *

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and

free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and

deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this

through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
