As you are aware, KCPA runs on a fiscal year of
July—June, so the end of our year has
approached. I wonder where the time has gone,
though. Wasn’t it just January?
We have an exciting June luncheon for you!
We’ll be announcing our Paralegal of the Year,
Scholarship Recipient and CAPA Conference
Attendee. We will also be honoring our
Sustaining Members and outgoing Board
members, and swearing in our 2015-2016 Board.
We also are excited to announce that we will be
returning to the Bakersfield Petroleum Club for
not only the June Installation and Awards
luncheon, but also for the 2015-2016 term! Please
remember to RSVP for the June luncheon no later
than June 3. The Petroleum Club has stricter
RSVP policies. If we have too many late RSVPs,
we will have to create a late RSVP rate, which
we’d love to avoid.
For those of you who are able to attend the 2015
27th Annual CAPA Conference, they have added
a Corporate Track—which I’m super excited
about. They have also gotten a reduced rate for
two groups (6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.) to tour the
Winchester Mystery House. If you haven’t
signed up yet, I would highly recommend
attending one of the CAPA Conferences. It’s a
great experience. Oh, and did I mention our very
own Bobbie D. Miller, ACP, is one of the
speakers in the Family Law track? It’s not too
late to register! If you do, make sure you register
as a “member” and that you indicate you are
with KCPA. You can check out the website
(www.caparalegal.org) for the brochure and how
to register.
I’d like to say a huge Thank You to our outgoing
Board members! Each of you have had an impact
on how well our Board has ran and the programs
we’ve been able to provide to our members. Can
everyone agree that our Board is amazing?? A
special thank you to Bobbie D. Miller, ACP, Vice
President and CAPA Primary—she has been my
rock and shoulder for my term as president. Ms.
Bobbie will not be returning to the Board next
term and will be sorely missed.
I’d also like to say thank you for having me serve
as your President for the past four years. I’d love
to hear any feedback you have that I can take
back to the Board for our July 25, 2015 retreat.
Please provide me any comments no later than
June 14 by e-mail ([email protected]) so I
can include it as discussion items with the Board.
Remember, we are here to serve you.
For those of you who read our newsletter each
month, we’re going to test you. We’ve placed an
image of lady bug throughout the newsletter. If
you can locate each ladybug, you’ll be entered
into a drawing for a gift card to be presented at
the June 11, 2015 luncheon. E-mail
[email protected] with the number of
ladybugs you find. Let’s see how many you can
find!
Thank you for a wonderful year!

Community AffairsCommunity Affairs
June
Our Community Affairs opportunity for June benefits the Wounded Heroes Fund. The Wounded Heroes Fund (WHF) is a community-wide organization dedicated to providing assistance to brave service men and women returning home from the battlegrounds of Iraq and Afghanistan. Wendy Porter, the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, realized that more needed to be accomplished, especially for service members and their families to resume life after war. She could not help her father and other returning Vietnam veterans. However, as Executive Director of the WHF, she is leading the effort to help the men and women who fought for our freedom in the Middle East. (http://thewoundedheroesfund.org/; telephone, 661-328-8600)
July
Our Community Affairs opportunity for July benefits the Heart Gallery. KCPA is accepting CASH donations to benefit the Heart Gallery. The Heart Gallery (through Kern Partnership for Children and Families) is a non-profit organization that assists Kern County youth that age-out of the foster care system, but are not yet independent.

Amber Brewer
Vice President and
Treasurer
Hi, it’s me, Amber Brewer, your
2015/2016 Vice President and
Treasurer. Most of you know me as
having served as a board member for
several years and being very passionate
about the paralegal profession and
maintaining the paralegal community. I
rejoin our board this year with a new
baby boy in tow. As a mommy now to
two boys, Tugston Alexander (3 years)
and Tobin Andrew (10 months)
[pictured here], I enjoy a good glass of
wine and getting out of the house (even
if that means wandering Target
aimlessly).

Hello Members, my name is Shontice Yates
and I am your Membership Services Director
for the Kern County Paralegal Association. I
have been employed with Klein, DeNatale,
Goldner for the past three years assisting
Joseph Hughes with Water law and probate/
civil litigation.
My husband and I recently bought our first
home and will be celebrating our second
anniversary in September. Together, we have
our toddler Mason, who will be turning four in
October and we have a one month old named
Luke. When there is free time, it is usually
spent with family, but I do enjoy gardening and
painting.

Juliann Somers
Student Representative
My name is Juliann Somers, I am presently
working towards my Bachelor’s degree in
Paralegal Studies. I live in Tehachapi with my
two children, Scott and Stephan whom are also
attending college. Working for the best law
firm in Bakersfield, (Klein, DeNatale and
Goldner), makes the hour commute each day
worth every mile. I have experience working
as a legal secretary in Estate Planning,
Construction Defect and Personal Injury. My
true passions are gardening and cooking,
which I find little time to do either while
attending college and working full time. I
believe that “the day you think you know
everything, is the day you stop learning”. I am
looking forward to being a part of the Kern
County Paralegal Association.
Troy Thompson
Webmaster
Troy Thompson has earned a Bachelor’s
Degree in Communications from Thomas
Edison State College and a Masters
Degree in Agriculture with specialization
in Environmental Horticulture Science
from California Polytechnic State
University, San Luis Obispo. He has
earned a paralegal diploma from Oak
Brook College of Law and Government
Policy, Fresno, CA and Certification from
National Association of Legal Assistants.
Starting as an intern for a small Civil
Litigation/Real Estate/ Probate practice in
Hemet, CA Troy still believes in the
principles which he was first taught
namely the value of personal attention to
clients, hard work, and being creative in
moving case work forward. In November
of 2012 Troy was hired by Swanson & O’
Dell (now Swanson O’Dell, A.P.C.) where
he is currently employed.

Each month the Kern County Paralegal
Association collects money or goods for charity.
Do you ever wonder where your money ends up
after the jars are collected and you head back to
your office? Curiosity led me to wonder what our
organization does for Kern County through our
charitable collections. Each month I meet
wonderful contact people from these community
groups. Our association also receives lovely
thank you notes in the mail that our members
never get to see. It is my hope to share with
you a little more about the charities you support
each year and to encourage you to take your
charitable intentions beyond the donation jar and
out into the community. As the year continues, I
hope to offer you chances to head out with other
KCPA members to make a difference and I look
forward to meeting you outside of the work and
luncheon arena.
One of our charitable beneficiaries is the
Mission at Kern County. Last April I toured The
Mission at Kern County’s Women’s Discipleship
Program facility. The Mission at Kern County
houses men and women overcoming addictions
or those that have lost their way in life on a
campus located at 816 East 21st Street.
Catherine Skow conducted a tour of the women’s
section of the facility. The women’s shelter is
located in the back of the high school sized
campus with an office at the front of the building
and a two story dormitory beyond the office with
kitchen, lounge, laundry room, counseling room/
office for educational studies and a peaceful
indoor reflection area. The residents have their
bedrooms ready for tours at all times and
recently an outside group came in as a surprise
to redecorate the bedroom and bathroom areas
with cheerful signs, and matching bedspreads

in bright colors with fun pillows. The ladies living
here all play a role, taking responsibility for chores,
kitchen duties and ultimately their lives through a
goal oriented process. As I toured the facility, the
friendly faces of the ladies living there greeted me.
I expected to see women in the depths of
depression, but instead found faces full of hope.
The atmosphere felt almost like the overnight
campgrounds where I worked as a camp counselor.
Ms. Skow explained that the ladies live on campus
at all times with a full schedule including religious
services, studying, and exercise classes. The
Women’s Discipleship program takes a year to
complete and I met women that were just entering
the program as well as ladies that work there who
have completed the program. There were even a
couple of women that work off campus and live in
two apartments above the dormitories with a
reasonable rent. These ladies were able to afford
cars this year and they proudly showed them off
with big grins on their faces. The campus also has
a gathering area for outdoor religious services and
BBQs. Donations have most recently been used to
construct a large new building where the Mission at
Kern County can host dinners, provide educational
courses for residents, conduct events and
accommodate large gatherings like an Easter
celebration. Ms. Skow even told the story of one
man who left his beautiful 1930 Chevy convertible
car to the Mission at Kern County when he passed
away because the Mission helped his grandson.
The Mission held a big auction for the car and with
those proceeds the Mission was able to purchase a
food vehicle to help feed the homeless.
Interview with Graduate Sheila
Sheila graduated from the program May 6, 2015
and works as an assistant to Jaime Durham the
program director. Sheila explained that she got off
track in her life and was given a list of resources to
help her. She called the Mission at Kern County
and went there for help with nothing but the
clothes on her back. Her first impression was that
the people of the Mission received her with open
arms. They were very welcoming and loving and
helped her by providing immediate needs like
hygiene products, clothing and probation process
assistance. Jaime is just one of the few people
helped out by the program and she says the ladies
there become like sisters. She still goes to the
monthly family BBQs held once a month where she
has bonded with the families of other girls going
through the program.
Interview with Community Development
Director Jaime Durham
Jaime Durham was available during my interview
with Sheila and she explained about the volunteer
opportunities at the Mission. Ms. Durham facilitates
the Ladies Guild, a group that formed just this year.
The Ladies Guild meets once a month from 11:30 to
12:30 on the Mission’s campus, typically on the last
Thursday of the month. All meetings are
announced on the Mission at Kern County’s
Facebook page. This guild provides for the health
of all the ladies living on campus and they
encouraged the bedroom makeovers that took
place this year. They also collect hygiene products
for use by the women there. If the Guild does not
sound like your type of volunteer work, there are
many other ways to get involved. The dance
instructors, yoga teachers and bible study leaders
are all volunteers. The Mission at Kern County also
has an upcoming BBQ to raise funds. Most of the
events are posted on the Facebook page. You are
welcome to book a tour of the facility even on
Saturdays. Ms. Durham says that the involvement
of professionals in our community like you will be a
wonderful thing for the Mission at Kern County.
