Throughout the Festival, we will not only have music spanning centuries and continents but exciting commissions and premieres all mixed into a joyous potpourri encompassing the most celebrated chamber music repertoire ever written. I think the whole world will be celebrating the magnificence that is Beethoven, so I hope you will enjoy my take on those celebrations with original works, a whole day inspired by the great man and his Kreutzer Sonata but most importantly one of our very special commissions. We will pay tribute to our beloved Goldner String Quartet and their 25th anniversary with a performance of Goldner Variations which I know right now will be a highlight of the Festival. As if that’s not enough, they get their very own Conversation Concert and tell their own story in words and music. I’m delighted to welcome a whole host of fabulous musicians from around the globe and as always, I look forward to their new collaborations which are such an integral part of the Festival.

Pavel Fischer returns to direct the Winterschool again, and of course the Festival program wouldn’t be the same without one of his Quartets – get ready! The beautiful Koto, a traditional instrument from Japan, makes its debut at the Festival and for the first time, our concert host comes to us from the UK. I’m simply thrilled that Petroc Trelawny joins us from the BBC. Special mentions to Deborah Cheetham AO, Dancenorth, and Paul Rissmann who will all bring exciting elements into the mix plus a return visit by Jessica Duchen who delighted us with her Being Mrs Bach event two years ago. Lovely to welcome back William Barton and exciting to include our youngest ever performer, violinist Christian Li.

For my final Festival as Artistic Director, I’m bringing you simply the best and have called it Carnival with the emphasis on celebrating everything AFCM has brought to you over 30 years. Come and join the celebrations – your invitation to the party is right here!

TOWNSVILLE CIVIC THEATRE

Hosted by Petroc Trelawny

The culmination of this program is the great Metamorphosen by Strauss. Our Artistic Director believes this to be one of the most moving chamber works in the repertoire and the musical references to Beethoven add to its emotional depth. However, this concert refers to change and we think you’ll be astonished by both the Mendelssohn and sparkling Ligeti miniatures. Add in some delicate Asian flavour and Poulenc’s reference to Mozart and this will be a musical rollercoaster.

A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R / P I A N O

Kathryn Stott, UKAt the age of five, I made friends with the upright piano in our living room. That was the beginning of my musical journey, one which continues as you read this. It would appear that my initial progress was rapid and by the age of eight, I found myself at a boarding school for young musicians, the Yehudi Menuhin School. During my studies there, it’s now clear to me that I was heavily influenced by two occasional visitors to the school; Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlmuter.

From then, my great passion for French music was ignited and Fauré in particular has remained the musical love of my life. Further studies at the Royal College of Music in London then led me very abruptly into the life of a professional musician via the Leeds International Piano Competition. It remains the steepest learning curve I’ve ever experienced. After a rollercoaster three years, I realised that I needed to re-connect with chamber music in a bid to feel more connected to other musicians and after all, this had played an important part of my musical existence since being a child.

When, quite by chance, I met Yo-Yo Ma in 1978, it turned out to be one of the most fortuitous moments of my life. Since 1985, we have

enjoyed a collaboration which has taken us to so many fascinating parts of the world and led to musical adventures with musicians who shared so much from their own traditions. I’ve always considered us to be intrepid musical explorers on our own individual paths but with an incredible bond that unites us on the creative highway.

Presently, I enjoy the challenge of creativity in a different way by bringing many musicians together once a year in my role as Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. My love of curating and directing began in 1995 and since then I’ve brought to life many of my ideas in events lasting anything from long weekends to two weeks. I continue to push my capacity for exploring music I know nothing about and love bringing together unusual combinations whenever possible.

There are too many highlights in my career to mention. Yes, it was a thrill to perform at the Last Night of the Proms to millions around the world, but equally a massive thrill to have lit up twenty small faces in an inner city school while they jumped up and down to energetic piano music! Working with young musicians is something I feel passionate about and presently

teach at the Academy of Music in Oslo. I’ve also had some truly exciting music written for me and enjoyed a particularly close collaboration with composer Graham Fitkin. What an unbelievable privilege it is to be immersed in a language which has no boundaries and has allowed me to share musical stories on a global scale; that little upright piano set me on quite a path! Talking of paths - I’ve also been found trekking in Nepal, Costa Rica, Bhutan or walking my spaniel Archie on the Yorkshire Moors.

The journey continues.

The Quartet has performed throughout Europe, America, Canada and Australia to critical acclaim. Currently Quartet in Residence at The University of Queensland, Tinalley will release its third disc with DECCA Classics in 2020.

Members: Adam Chalabi (1st Violin), Lerida Delbridge (2nd Violin), Justin Williams (Viola), Patrick Murphy (Cello).

Band of the 1st Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment Australia

Comprised of 22 specialist musicians, Townsville’s own Band of the First Battalion (1RAR Band) provides music support to the Australian Army’s 3rd Brigade, other Defence organisations, and the broader community of North Queensland. Covering tasks as diverse as ceremonial activities, Defence charity events, and professional concerts they also work with Forces Entertainment to bring homegrown music to our deployed troops. With almost as many ensemble combinations as musicians, their professionalism and flexibility consistently demonstrate that they are ‘Instrumental in Defence’.

Barrier Reef Orchestra Australia

For 20 years Townsville’s community orchestra has drawn from the diversity of experience in North Queensland to gather gifted and talented musicians together to play orchestral music for the community. Conductors and players from all over Australia and overseas are keen to work with the orchestra and assist its development. In 2018 they partnered with Principal players from the Queensland Symphony and in 2019 AFCM’s founding Artistic Director, Theodore Kuchar, returned to conduct a special program.

On the very day this thirtieth anniversary booking brochure was printed in Townsville, Rollo Crittenden was at the annual trophy presentation dinner in Fort Worth Texas to receive the 2020 BRIT award, illustrated here, on behalf of Crittenden Family Wines, at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

Each year the Botanical Research Institute of Texas [BRIT] in conjunction with the Paris based FIVS, a consortium of industry leaders with a commitment to sustainable grape growing, choose the wine company they consider has made the most significant contribution to sustainability in the global wine industry. This year the winner is our small family owned and second generation managed winery and vineyard. Annual entries for the award are received from all corners of the globe with runners up this year coming from Portugal, France, California and Chile. It is a very rewarding and humbling accolade to be chosen from such a stellar line up of entries.

In particular the judges singled out Crittenden Estate for its radical and innovative vineyard management program which has included, over the past twelve years, the total abandonment of all artificial chemical fertilizers and pesticide and fungicide sprays in favour of the use of the equivalent of fifty tip truck loads of compost generated on the family farm from grape residues from vintage and spread back into the vineyard after a year of fermentation. They also praised the reduction in electricity consumption by 60% achieved with the installation of solar panels and the extensive use of recycled water for irrigation plus the family’s interaction with the wider community to promote awareness of the importance of regenerative farming practices.

The FutureAnd now the Crittenden Family commences what it hopes will prove to be yet another innovative, on-going and rewarding relationship with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. We look forward to meeting the legion of music lovers who come along to Townsville each winter to enjoy what has become a must attend in the Australian music calendar and share with them the fruits of our labour for their pleasure at selected AFCM events.Garry Crittenden DromanaJanuary 2020
