Culture Shock

Indian Culture Shock

If you're coming to India for the first time, you're probably feeling a bit apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. This is completely understandable and is something that everyone who travels to India experiences.

Most of the things you hear about India are true. It’s packed with people, it’s colorful, the cities are polluted, the cars honk incessantly, and the sidewalks often double as toilets. As wild and crazy as India is though, it is an extraordinary country if you are up for the challenge.

It isn't just the landscapes that are so diverse - the people, cultures and languages are too. So depending on where you go and travel to throughout India, your experience of the culture change could be very different from place to place. The contrast between each place will be very different. You will experience different levels of culture shock and you will love some places and hate others and that is ok! You do not have to love everything!

Culture Shock

Affects of culture shock

Excessive concern over cleanliness Boredom

Feelings of helplessness and withdrawal Withdrawal

Irritability Getting "stuck" on one thing

Anger Suicidal or fatalistic thoughts

Mood swings Excessive sleep

Glazed stare Compulsive eating/drinking/weight gain

Desire for home and old friends Stereotyping host nationals

Physiological stress reactions Hostility towards host nationals

Homesickness

Culture Shock

Effects of culture shock

•You are going to another country, not alien planet. But they do not speak like you and you do not speak like them. But both you have 1 mouth and 1 brain, so express right and understand well

•India is a country with Spices in food. In other country, the food is not the same. There might be no taste. But surely food is not deadly, so take some good food with you unless you are non-veg.

•You are on an internship in youth run organization. You might get 5 different beds to sleep on but definitely not a 5-star hotel so be prepared

•If you think you are the Boss, the Boss is not always right. That country has completely different thinking and living. Live with it and understand it.

•You will meet new people daily, but they wont have mavericks to kill you. Speak for yourself and Speak more about India and our culture. Learn about theirs.

•The biggest challenge is to change lives in a positive way. What are you going to do to make sure your 6 weeks, 42 days, 1008 hours are counting?
