l.O SUMMARY

The following report describes the results of a geological mapping, prospecting and trenching program carried out over

the Four Square property for Power Explorations Inc. in June and July, 1987.

The property is located 100 miles north-northwest of Pickle

Lake in Northwestern Ontario. Access may be gained by float

plane from Pickle Lake or from Weagamow Lake, 40 miles to the west. A winter road has been constructed into the Mussel-

white property from Highway 808, and provides winter access

to within 12 miles south of the property.

The property lies on the south limb of a synclinal fold which

parallels the North Caribou Lake greenstone belt along its central core. It straddles a north-northwest trending

contact between the South Rim Metavolcanics and Eyapamikama

Lake Metasediments (Breaks et al., 1986). The South Rim

Metavol- canics in this area are comprised of pillowed and massive mafic volcanics and intermediate to felsic flows and

tuffs with large intercalations of clastic metasediments and

oxide facies banded iron formation. Stratigraphically overlying this package are cross-stratified, epiclastic sedimentary accumulations (Eyapamikama Lake Metasediments) in

the axial portion of the large syncline. The intrusive

contact of the tonalitic North Caribou Lake batholith lies in the extreme southwest corner of the property (Fig. No. 1).

Numerous anomalous gold values, ranging up to 790 ppb, were obtained from grab samples of moderately deformed, highly

gossaned banded iron formation at 77*OON,4-HOOW. Grab samples

at a similarly deformed and gossaned zone of banded iron formation at GS+OON^+OOW had gold values ranging up to 235 ppb.

Six old trenches that were re-exposed, mapped and sampled in

detail, either within or at the contact with overlying mafic

volcanics, yielded anomalous gold values of up to 190 ppb.

Other anomalous gold values of 100, 235 and 170 ppb were

derived from a gossan zone in wackes, a quartz vein and a

shear zone in basalts, respectively.

Further exploration is warranted to better determine the

significance and extent of gold mineralization, shear zones

and vein systems on this property. Differing tectonic styles

manifested in different zones of the banded iron formation,

as a result of megascopic boudinization, provide abundant

dilatant zones critical for the passage and deposition of

epigenetic auriferous fluids. The on-property strike length

of banded iron formation is over three miles and should be

investigated along its length.

Based on geological similarities and proximity to the Musselwhite, Snoppy Lake and Opapimiskan gold discoveries to

the south, the property merits additional exploration. A

two-phase program of I.P. surveying and diamond drilling is

warranted and recommended to better assess the potential of the Four Square property.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

The following report describes the results of a geological exploration program, comprised of geological mapping (at a scale of l inch to 400 feet), prospecting and trenching on the Four Square property for Power Explorations Inc. The program was carried out by Geocanex Ltd. in June and July, 1987, following an earlier program of linecutting, ground magnetic and VLF-EM surveying in January and February, 1987 (Fig. No. 2).

The program was carried out from June 11 to July 3, 1987.

The following personnel were involved in the work.

P. Newman Project Geologist Windsor, OntarioC. Burk Geologist London, OntarioD. Hopkins Geological Assistant Whitby, OntarioP. Gammell Geological Assistant Calgary, AlbertaP. Latta Geological Assistant Toronto, OntarioR. McKelvey Geological Assistant Kirkland Lake, Ontario

All work was carried out on a picket line grid with baseline orientation N20 0W, and perpendicular cross lines every 400 feet.

Grab and chip samples were taken of features of potential

economic interest, including quartz veins, shear zones and

sulphide-bearing metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks.

Several old trenches were re-exposed, mapped and sampled in

detail.

The time breakdown in man-days for the work performed is as

A winter road from Highway 808 to the Musselwhite gold property 12 miles to the south, provides winter road access to the area.

Services, supplies and manpower can be obtained from Pickle Lake. The town is a mining and transportation centre with a population of approximately 350.

5.0 TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION

Outcrop is exposed over 5 to 7% of the Four Square property and is mainly confined to a large north-northwest trending ridge along the central portion of the property. Banded iron formation and mafic volcanics are very well exposed along this ridge, in contrast to felsic volcanics and sediments which are recessively weathered and poorly exposed in the low-lying eastern and western areas. Hummocky pine-covered sand and boulder ridges mantle outcrop areas, and form well-drained hills dissected by muskeg plain.

6.0 PREVIOUS WORK

The first significant work recorded on the property was in the form of a government reconnaissance mapping program by Satterly (1939) at a scale of l inch to l mile. An aeromagnetic survey (ODM-GSC, 1960) was also completed over the area at a scale of l inch to l mile.

In 1982, Cominco Ltd. carried out an overburden drilling program on an area which now encompasses the present Four Square property and the northern half of the present Akow North property, held by Moss Resources Ltd. and Power

Page 14: RECEIVED NOV 2 v w MINING LANDS SECTION€¦ · 538l6swe0ei 010 report on geological mapping, prospecting and trenching four square property district of kenora, patricia mining division

Explorations Inc. A 61-hole, 755 foot program was completed, on which basal till geochemistry for Au, Cu, Pb and Zn was done on samples from 53 holes. The highest gold content of till samples from the holes ranged from 24 to 86 ppb Au along the northwestern shore of Akow Lake. Base metal values were very low and indicated no subcropping base metal mineraliza tion of interest. There is no further record of work by the company.

In the second year of a three-year interdisciplinary program, Breaks et al., (1986) mapped the area at a scale of l inch to 1/2 mile. The same year, the Ministry of Northern Affairs and Mines (1986) conducted an airborne magnetic and electro magnetic survey over the North Caribou Lake belt.

The most recent work done on the property consists of a ground magnetic and VLF-EM survey conducted by Geocanex Ltd. during January and February 1987.

7.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND ECONOMIC MINERALIZATION

The Four Square property is located in the north-central portion of the North Caribou-Opapimiskan-Neawagank Lakes greenstone belt. Due to the relative remoteness of the area, the belt has not been extensively worked by mining and exploration companies. Most of the available geological information on the area is from government funded geological/ geophysical surveys. The Ontario Geological Survey has recently completed a three year geological/geophysical survey of the area, manned by staff from the Precambrian Geology, Engineering and Terrain Geology, and Mineral Deposits sections.

Page 15: RECEIVED NOV 2 v w MINING LANDS SECTION€¦ · 538l6swe0ei 010 report on geological mapping, prospecting and trenching four square property district of kenora, patricia mining division

- 10 -

The belt forms part of the Sachigo Subprovince, which is composed of several small, irregularly shaped sequences of supracrustal rocks. The rocks in this subprovince are evolutionarily distinct and probably older than the rocks of the Uchi and Wabigoon Subprovinces to the south (Bartlett et al., 1985).

The belt forms an arcuate, horn-shaped assemblage of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks which has been synclinally folded about an axis approximately coincident with Eyapamikama Lake (Satterly, 1939). The syncline is rimmed by mafic volcanics on the north and south, and filled with trough cross-stratified, epiclastic sedimentary accumulations in the axial portion. Two fairly continuous bands of iron formation and chemical sediments mark the contact between the metavolcanics and metasediments (Bartlett et al., 1985).

Regional geological maps indicate that the belt is bounded by paragneiss and migmatized rocks in the north, and felsic intrusives in the west and south (Map 2292, Big Trout Lake - North Caribou Lake).

The entire belt extends from Weagamow Lake in the northwest, to Opapimiskan Lake in the southeast. South of Opapimiskan Lake, the belt bifurcates into two major lobes; one extending south through Libert Lake, the other through the Forester and Neawagank Lakes area.

Airborne electromagnetic and magnetic surveys (MNAM, 1986) indicate that the centre of the property contains the main magnetic trend interpreted to be the same iron formation that hosts the Musselwhite, and Snoppy Lake deposits, located twelve miles south-southeast of the property on Opapimiskan

Lake. Here, a consortium of companies headed by Dome Mines Ltd. has outlined a combined total of 5.4 million tons of ore at an average grade of 0.20 ounces gold per ton in structu rally controlled gold-quartz-sulphide mineralization in iron formation.

In 1985, Van Horne Exploration Inc. announced a golddiscovery the same band of iron formation, on the propertyadjoining the Musselwhite to the north.

At the western end of the Weagamow-North Caribou Lakes belt, two gold showings (Agutua Arm, Teal) have been partially explored. They consist of gold-silver mineralization in sulphide-bearing quartz-carbonate veins in shear zones within mafic volcanics.

Further to the east in the McGruer Lake area, Northern Dynasty Explorations Ltd. have discovered a polymetallic Ag-Pb-Zn bearing shear zone hosted in lean iron formation.

Towards the southeastern extremity of the belt on the Neawagank Lake East property of Van Horne Gold Exploration Inc. and Power Explorations Inc., gold has been discovered in arsenopyrite-bearing quartz veins hosted in a sheared/ silicified gabbro. Numerous anomalous assays have been reported, including a value of 1.79 ounces Au per ton over 1.0 feet.

1 O*8.0 PROPERTY GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION

8.1 General Geology

The Four Square property lies on the western limb of a majorsynclinal fold whose axis parallels the belt. The axialtrace of the north-northwest trending syncline lies neareastern periphery of the claim group.

the

Eight lithological units strike across the Four Squareproperty. From west to east they are:

1. tonalite

2. pillowed and massive mafic volcanics

3. intermediate to felsic flows and tuffs

4. clastic metasediments

5. oxide facies banded iron formation

The development of amphibole metacrysts in mafic volcanics, and garnet, cordierite and staurolite in aluminous metasedi- ments, indicates that the rocks on the property are regionally metamorphosed to amphibolite facies.

Localized shearing and quartz veining have resulted in alteration in many of the rocks to assemblages containing retrograde sericite, chlorite and carbonate.

Drawing No. l (in map pocket) shows the geology and structural features as determined from this program.

8.2 Volcanics

Apart from the pillowed and massive mafic volcanic unit found in contact with the banded iron formation along the central ridge of the property, volcanic rocks are very poorly exposed on the property.

A basal mafic volcanic unit that outcrops along the western margin of the property has a minimum thickness of 2,500 feet and is composed of light green-gray weathering, fine to medium grained massive and pillowed mafic flows. Mildly deformed pillows average less than 3 feet in length, have dark green chloritic selvages and locally developed epidote infillings of selvages and more vesicular pillow tops. The 200 to 600 foot thick mafic volcanic unit in the central portion of the property is very similar and indicate a east-facing stratigraphy. Both units have a grey-green fresh surface and are composed of subequal proportions of hornblende (or actinolite) and plagioclase with subordinate amounts of chlorite and quartz.

Page 19: RECEIVED NOV 2 v w MINING LANDS SECTION€¦ · 538l6swe0ei 010 report on geological mapping, prospecting and trenching four square property district of kenora, patricia mining division

- 14 -

Intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks are not exposed on surface, but are interpreted to comprise a 1,000 foot thick assemblage of flows and tuffs. On the Akow North property to the south of the Four Square property, exposures of white to buff, banded, foliated felsic volcanics containing intercalations of mafic volcanics and greywacke are noted (Adams and North, 1985).

8.3 Sediments

Clastic sediments are exposed into two 1,500 and 2,500 foot thick units located on the western and eastern flanks, respectively, of the main outcrop ridge that extends down the central portion of the property.

Exposures at L8*OON,94-50E and L64*OOS,14*50E of knobby- weathering wackes and subordinate pelites have coarse, pink-grey porphyroblastic cordierite crystals that measure, in places, up to 6 cm long.

These crystals are ovoid, locally exhibit sinistral rotation of up to 40 e and can comprise lQ-15% of the light-brown weathering rock. In addition, euhedral staurolite porphyro- blasts, apparently unrotated, are found disseminated throughout the quartz-feldspar-biotite groundmass.

Small intercalations of garnet-biotite schist were noted in contact with banded iron formation at various locations on the property. One exposure at 63*20N,2*10W displays sub-5 mm euhedral garnet porphyroblasts in a fine-grained biotite* quartz+feldspar matrix.

l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

- 15 -

Banded iron formation is very well exposed on the outcrop ridge along the centre of the property and is typically composed of 1/2 to one inch thick buff-to-white weathering chert laminae intercalated with 1/4 inch thick, grey to brown weathering magnetite+grunerite laminae. In general, the iron formation is leaner towards the eastern margin of the unit. The prominent aeromagnetic anomaly associated with this unit exhibits a pinch-and'-swell shape, attributable to large-scale boudinization. Rocks in neck zones of lower magnetic intensity have undergone conversion of magnetite into grunerite to a greater degree than rocks associated with adjacent magnetic highs (Breaks et al., 1986).

8.4 Intrusives

Clear to milky white, concordant quartz veins constitute the bulk of intrusive rocks on the property and are generally less than 12" wide, contain trace sulphides and occasionally, carbonate. Tourmaline was noted in a number of discordant quartz veins in mafic flows at 63+4013,0+651^.

Two forty foot wide concordant mafic dykes intrude pelitic and clastic sediments at L60+OOS,13+OOE. These are typically medium-grained gabbroic intrusives composed predominantly of pyroxene and feldspar with minor quartz and are very weakly magnetic.

A twelve inch wide lamprophyre dyke concordantly intrudes banded iron formation at L24+OQIH, 0+50E. The light brown-weathering dyke is composed of fine-grained biotite and quartz and hosts small lenses and stringers of calcite.

An outcrop at L56+OOS,54+OOW exposes massive, medium-grained tonalite of the North Caribou Lake Batholith that is light grey on weathered surface, dark grey on fresh surface and composed of subequal proportions of quartz and plagioclase with 15 to 2(U biotite.

8.5 Structure

The rocks on the property strike north-northwest at approx imately 325* and generally dip steeply west from 75* to 85*.

Geological mapping during the present program and by Breaks et al. (1986), suggests that the property straddles a synclinal fold axis which strikes 325*. The axial plane of the fold dips steeply west and plunges south. Drag-fold axes in banded iron formation plunge 45* to 70* south.

On the basis of truncations in magnetic signature, a large east-west trending, 300 foot dextral offset is interpreted to lie at L16+OON, base line 0. It is not certain whether or not the VLF-EM response supports this interpretation. The location of the offset coincides with the point where the magnetic signature of the banded iron formation is at its thinnest, due to megascopic boudinization of the unit. The effect of this large-scale deformation is manifested in differing tectonic styles observed in the banded iron formation. Outcrops near the necking point of these mega scopic boudins are dominated by abundant small-scale boudinage whereas outcrops in the "centre" of the boudin tend to show intense folding and dextral shearing.

Page 22: RECEIVED NOV 2 v w MINING LANDS SECTION€¦ · 538l6swe0ei 010 report on geological mapping, prospecting and trenching four square property district of kenora, patricia mining division

- 17 -

Macroscopic closed to open Z-folds in banded iron formation have an axial plane striking at 300* to 310* and dipping steeply southwest at 70* to 85*. A moderately developed superimposed crenulation cleavage observed in grunerite-rich bands strikes at approximately 300* and dips 45* south-west. A locally developed axial planar fracture cleavage is present in folds of the first phase and, in places, hosts small quartz-pyrrhotite veinlets similar to those found at the Musselwhite and Snoppy Lake deposits.

Zones of shearing are observed on difference scales in all lithologies, but are best developed in the brittle banded iron formation unit. Sub-1 inch concordant limonitic shear zones are commonly observed. In addition, dextral shearing along axial planar fracture cleavages exhibit displacements up to 8 inches. The widest zone of shearing, however, is a concordant brittle deformation zone up to 12 feet wide located at 63+50N,2+15W. Angular clasts of chert up to 6 inches long are preferentially oriented parallel to the strike of the zone in a chert matrix.

8.6 Geophysical Summary

Results of the VLF-EM and magnetic survey indicate that the Four Square property hosts a unit of banded iron formation that thickens in the north and south and thins, presumably as a result of megascopic boudinization, in the central portion of the property. The magnetic signature is very high along this unit, reaching amplitudes of 84,000 gammas. Filtered inphase VLF-EM contours associated with the unit are simi larly high, reaching +203I in places.

Numerous north-northwest trending VLF-EM conductors occur concordantly to subconcordantly to the stratigraphy and may represent unexposed sulphide facies iron formation, graphitic and/or sulphide-bearing volcanics and sediments, or sulphide- bearing concordant shear zones (Medd, 1987). Two cross cutting west-northwest trending faults/shears and one subconcordant, north-northwest trending fault/shear are interpreted on the basis of magnetic and VLF-EM discontinu ities. Two areas of small scale, tight folding within iron formation are interpreted on the basis of magnetic and VLF-EM data. The locations for these are?

L96+OON to L52+OON; 2+OOE to 10+OOW

L16+OOS to L52+OOS; 6+OOE to 2+OOW

8.7 Economic Mineralization

Rock sampling and prospecting were focussed along the wide band of iron formation trending north-northwest through the centre of the property. Six old trenches were re-exposed, mapped and sampled. A brief description of each trench and associated mineralization follows. Trenches FS-1 to FS-4 are located in stripped Area A {Fig. No. 4), while trenches FS-5 and FS-6 are located further south.

8.7.1 Trench FS-1

Located along the northern claim margin of the Four Square property at L96+OON,6+OOW, Trench FS-1 exposes weakly gossaned oxide facies banded iron formation containing up to D.5% disseminated pyrrhotite (Fig. No. 5), Fourteen grab samples from the mildly deformed area yielded low gold values, the highest of which analyzed 60 pb.

8.7.2 Trenches FS-2 and FS-3

Trench FS-2 straddles the contact between moderately deformed banded iron formation and garnetiferous hornblende schist at 94*OON,5H-15W (Fig. No. 6).

The contact is marked by the occurrence of sub- l inch con cordant pyrrhotite and pyrite veinlets. Trench FS-3 exposes weakly gossaned banded iron formation in the same outcrop at 934-90N,5*40W. Deformation exhibited in the iron formation becomes more intense towards the western edge of the outcrop where shearing and Z-folding are abundant.

Out of 21 samples taken over the area, nine analyzed 50 ppb Au or better. Values ranging from 50 to 190 ppb Au were obtained from samples in the vicinity of Trench FS-2, most being directly at the contact or within proximal banded iron formation. Samples from Trench FS-3 failed to yield anomal ous gold values. The highest gold values from the outcrop area, however, were taken from and dilated, limonitic, axial planar fracture cleavage in the deformed iron formation. Two samples taken from the' same location assayed 350 and 240 ppb Au.

8.7.3 Trench FS-4

Trench FS-4 located at 85+OON,3+25W, straddles the same contact between banded iron formation and hornblende schist as found in Trench FS-2 (Fig. No. 7). Out of eight samples taken for assay, two anomalous gold values 50 and 70 ppb were derived from samples taken at, and slightly below, the con tact in the banded iron formation. Again, the contact is marked by the occurrence of small pyrite and pyrrhotite veins. In addition, a sample taken from a small gossan zone located 17 feet to the west of the contact analyzed 50 ppb Au.

8.7.4 Trench FS-5

Trench FS-5 is located at 75+50N,4+60W and exposes a magnetite-rich gossanous section of banded iron formation hosting up to J.0% sub- 1/4 inch ankerite veinlets and 11 pyrite (Fig. No. 8). One anomalous gold value (80 ppb) was found out of ten samples taken.

8.7.5 Trench FS-6

Trench FS-6 exposes a pervasively carbonatized section of gossanous banded iron formation at 47*15N,(H40W (Fig. No. 9) values of 40 and 35 ppb Au were derived from a concordant shear zone cutting across the trench and a fractured, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite-rich (5% combined) section of iron formation, respectively.

8.7.6 Stripped Area B

A large outcrop area at 29+OON, base line zero exposes the thickest continuous section of banded iron formation stratigraphy found on the property (Fig. No. 10). In addition to taking samples of quartz veins, gossan and shear zones, character samples of banded iron formation were analyzed to assess any changes in background gold value. Although no systematic change in background values was detected, a number of anomalous values were encountered. A small gossan zone, a concordant shear zone and a character sample of mafic tuffs analyzed 158, 45 and 55 ppb Au, respectively.

8.7.7 General Discussion

Two large outcrop exposures of banded iron formation yielded a number of anomalous gold values. These are discussed further.

The first, located at 77+OON/4+OOW, exposes a wide section of moderately-deformed, heavily-gossaned banded iron formation. Along with anomalous gold values of 225, 175, 140 and 100 ppb taken from gossan zones, the highest value on the property (790 ppb) was obtained in a gossan zone oriented parallel to an axial planar fracture cleavage in a well- folded area. A small outcrop located just north of this area exposes a highly brecciated zone of magnetite and grunerite- rich iron formation that assayed 165 ppb.

The second large outcrop area is located at 63+0013,2+001*7 and straddles the contact between moderately-deformed banded iron formation and overlying pillowed and massive mafic flows. The contact itself is highly sheared and hosts a 6 inch wide, smokey, arsenopyrite-bearing quartz vein which assayed 215 ppb. Stratigraphically overlying this, below the mafic unit, is a 6 foot wide band of garnet-biotite schist that analyzed 100 ppb Au. Other anomalous values of 235, 160 70 ppb Au were from gossan zone samples within banded iron formation close to the sheared contact.

The only anomalous gold values encountered during the present program that were not derived from banded iron formation were from a gossan zone in wackes (100 ppb), a quartz- tourmaline vein and a shear zone in basalts (235 and 170 ppb Au, respectively).

9.0 CONCLUSIONS

The property is underlain by a north-northwest trending sequence of mafic to felsic volcanics, clastic sediments and iron formation which has been synclinally-folded about an axis which strikes north-northwest - south-southeast and plunges steeply south. One thick, continuous band of iron formation flanks the fold axis on its west side.

Numerous anomalous gold values, ranging up to 790 ppb, were found in moderately deformed, highly gossaned banded iron formation at a number of locations on the property.

In light of the association of significant gold mineraliza tion with iron formation on the Musselwhite, Snoppy Lake and Van Horne properties on strike to the south, the Four Square property has good potential for economic gold deposits.

10.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

A two phase exploration progam is recommended.

10.1 Phase I

Should consist of I. P. surveying to better define drill targets.

10.2 Phase II

This should consist of diamond drilling of selected geophysical/geochemical targets. The location of drill holes will be contingent upon the results of Phase I. It is estimated that a minimum of 3,000 feet will be required.
