Dear Families and Friends of Reynella East College

    Professional Learning:Developing Growth Mindsets

On 5 June, over 500 teachers and support staff from our local Panalatinga Partnership, met for the first time on the Student Free day, to learn about fixed verses growth mindset and the influence this has on our preschool children and students of all ages. Staff found motivational speaker Robyn Moore (who some of you might know as the voice of Blinky Bill) incredibly funny, engaging and challenging.

    Growth Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success. According to Dweck;

In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates successwithout effort. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard workbrains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education and sports. It enhances relationships.See more about growth mindset click here

At the conference we also took a look at part of a keynote address by Professor Martin Westwell about new research in neuroscience and the importance of executive function. He explained how we

can help students free up working memory to deal with higher order thinking, problem solving and develop stop and think strategies to develop open mindedness and willingness to have a go rather than shut down or avoid difficult or challenging learning. To learn more click here. The conference topic was developed for a number of reasons:

Firstly, local research tells us that as a system, SA Public Education is highly caring and responsive of our children and young people, but recognises that we can do more to encourage intellectual stretch. For teachers this means making sure that our learning and assessment tasks are challenging and extend students thinking and problem solving skills

Secondly, the results of a national survey of students from Year 6-9, known as the Middle Years Index, send some clear messages about what is working well and what we need to work on at REC. One of the compelling messages is that a significant number of our students give up early when learning becomes challenging.

All teachers in the Partnership have now made a commitment to action. The aim is to work individually and collectively to help develop growth mindsets and more resilient learners.

Hairdressing Runway ShowThe Hairdressing Salon at Reynella East College became a frenzy of 60s beehives, bohemian braids, 50s pin ups and zombie brides on Monday of week 8 this term.

The semester one hairdressing students worked hard to overcome minor challenges throughout the day, in order to create a total look for each of their models. Each student was responsible for the hair styling, makeup and fashion styling for their model, while working in a group to decide on a theme with accompanying music to support their catwalk style.

Many of the students decided to recreate 50s and 60s looks, expressing their inspiration was derived from the confident and expressive models from this period.

The runway task was a great opportunity for students to utilise their teamwork, creativity and innovation, while showcasing their practical makeup and hairdressing skills.

College Music NightOn Wednesday June 6th the Reynella East College Music Department held their annual Music Night. Students from across the College performed a variety of items. Vocal performances included the Primary Festival Choir, conducted by Ms. Julie dLima, Middle School Choir and Senior Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Ms. Tessa Jarvis and various small ensemble vocal numbers, accompanied by our voice teacher, Mr. Danny Helps. Numbers in music have increased this year to enable 3 choirs to operate across the College. Also, increased in participants is our Primary Hub Music Program. Representing the Hub Band this year were students from across 4 schools REC, Woodcroft, Braeview and Aberfoyle Hub Primary Schools. This band was conducted by Ms. Catherine Davey, our Woodwind teacher. The high school 45 piece Concert Band, conducted by Mrs. Katrina Rycroft, presented 4 items including latest hits Forget You, by Bruno Mars and Timber by Pitbull. Both the Year 9 and 10 class bands performed songs that they had prepared in class during semester 1 and some of our flute students played trios. A favourite of music night was the Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Mr. David Hopgood, the percussion teacher. Thank you to staff and parents who attended and well done to all student participants!

Year 12 DramaThe two Year 12 drama classes recently presented their group productions Away and Rhinoceros. These two plays were the externally assessed exams for Stage 2 Drama and were presented for a student and family audience. Ms dLimas class performed Away by Michael Gow which is an Australian play set in the 1960s. This play used realism to show the emotional journey of three families who travel on holiday to search for some happiness and hope for a brighter future. Corey Birbeck played the young Tom with sensitivity as his character battled the loss of hope through his journey of terminal cancer. Joseph Giblin played Toms father with the believability of a parent who has to stay positive even though his son will not be with him for much longer. The emotionally driven play was well received by its audience and the cast enjoyed the challenge that naturalistic realism brings to the stage.

Mr Trebilcos class presented Ionescos absurdist play Rhinoceros. This play tells the story of a town where all of the inhabitants become driven towards a collective way of thinking and hardened to the needs of individual thinking and because of this, each human becomes a rhinoceros. Jack Nolan played Berenger, the last remaining human who had not transformed into a hardened rhinoceros. His explosive declaration of being the last human remaining was presented with memorable determination. Robert Slipeks quirky character of Jean was equally entertaining and he performed his role with energy and precision.

Our Year 12 students have delighted in the opportunity to perform for our school community and we thank the students, staff and families who continue to support the drama program.

Australian Defence Force ExpoDuring week 7 of Term 2 a group of students went to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Careers Expo for the Schools VIP day. It was an excellent day. Our students worked with people they didnt know from other schools, to complete secret missions designed to demonstrate the power of team work and communication skills. There were numerous defence personnel on hand to talk to and offer a true insight into what this line of work involves. All of the students involved came away feeling inspired.

Whilst at the ADF Expo we experienced a large variety of real world situations carried out by the Airforce, Navy and Army every day. The day was full of relevant information and fun activities. There was a wide range of military equipment and vehicles that we were able to handle and climb inside of. It was a great day and definitely a good place to go for information on how to join the Australian Defence Force and the skills needed. Gavin W, Year 11.

They were very helpful in answering my questions about the defence force and we got to do lots of cool activities Joshua H, Year 11.

The information that was given out on the expo day was really good and will help me follow my career path in the Army. Along with that, it was cool that we got to wear the packs they wear out on the field and hold the weapons that they use. Jack M, Year 11.

COLLEGE NEWS Ramsay Unit visitsParliament HouseOn Tuesday June 9, Ramsey 1 and 3 visited Parliament House as part of our classes History and Civics and Citizenship lessons. We were taken on a tour of Parliament House and given the opportunity to learn about the history of our State Parliament, past and present political leaders, the processes involved in decision making and the two houses of parliament. Our class was also lucky enough to hold a mock debate in the Lower House. The children were excited to be able to sit in the positions of power such as Premier, Leader of the Opposition and Speaker. This really engaged the students and allowed them to get an understanding of how Parliament works during a sitting day.

We were also lucky enough to have Nat Cook, the Member for Fisher, take us on our tour. Nat was fantastic with the students and really gave us an insightful look into SA parliament. We would also like to thank Nat for her time, patience and dedication on a fantastic day.

Learning Together Across the AgesYear 11 Child StudiesPLAY The Work of ChildrenPartnerships between the Preschool and the high school students were further encouraged when the current Year 11 Child Studies students worked with individual youngsters to plan and make play activities according to the interests of each child and their stage of development. The activities designed and made for the children covered a wide range and considered indoor and outdoor play, collaborative and individual play, imaginative play, a focus on developing eye/hand coordination, gross motor skills and cognitive development. Creativity was a big factor. The relationships were established over three afternoons and the children were delighted to play with their new activities and the high school students were willing participants! Many interesting and entertaining conversations could be over heard.

Some of the feedback from the children included comments like: Shakona is awesome, Can you be my sister? and this is so much fun, further providing evidence of the connections that were established.
