It was great to see so many parents talking to teachers in the Primary classrooms and to the Secondary Home Group teachers in our brand new library. This year we changed the format of the Secondary Acquaintance Night so that Home Group teachers met parents individually and provided them with an overview of the achievements and potential of their students. While we had many positive comments last night on the changed format, I would be very keen to hear of your suggestions and comments on the night. Please email me; [email protected] with your thoughts. I would like to particularly welcome our new families and teachers into the College. Once again we have a large number of new students joining us at all levels of the school and I trust that they have had a successful transition into our College. Ms Sue Matene is the new Assistant Principal for the early Years and Mr Ben Paech is the Assistant Principal for the Primary years. Ms Deb Walsh, Ms Min Spry, Ms Rebecca Semler, Ms Penny Harris and Ms Shelley Carmen have joined us in the Primary section and it is great to welcome back Ms Shari Lush, Ms Michelle Lee, Ms Heidi Warnes and Ms Elke Schipanski. In the Secondary section I would like to welcome Ms Julie D’Lima, Mr Mark Haughton, Mr Eng Chuah, Mr Graham Kilpatrick, and welcome back Mr Tom Linke, Ms Nicole James and Ms Amanda Chandler. This year we are well into our building program, with more fences and more restrictions on movement around the school, including our main car park! Despite this, we have had a very smooth start to the school year, and I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their patience and good humour in negotiating their way around the school. We are all getting a bit fitter as we walk that bit further to get from one place to another. While there have been some further delays to some of the building – the car park for example, other parts of the project are running ahead of schedule. I think all of our neighbours will be pleased that the car park will re-open on the 28th February, and the Pre-School parents and students will be pleased to be moving to their new centre at the end of this term. The whole project is now scheduled to be completed in the first week of August. So far, we have been very pleased with our new facilities and I know that our first students in our new commercial kitchen undertaking their TAFE certificates are appreciating the partnership between the builder – Mossops and Mr David Helsham our Hospitality teacher, in providing a quality learning environment. A reminder that the AGM of our Governing Council will be held next Monday – the 18th February at 7:30 pm in the Secondary staffroom. This year the Governing Council will be continuing the work of creating our new college, with decisions around branding, uniform, and building names and we will also be looking at future directions in the provision of education for our students. Five Governing Council members are up for re-election and I invite nominations from interested parents who would like to join with us in creating our College. Rob Mutton - Principal

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Friends of Reynella East College,

WELCOME BACK PRIMARYWelcome back to the 2013 School year! I’d like to welcome new staff to our P-7 team. Firstly Sue Matene (Mrs M) who has been appointed as our P-3 (Early Years) Assistant Principal from 2013 to 2017. Sue will work with our P-3 staff and be the second point of contact for parent concerns after the class teacher. I’d also like to welcome Ben Paech (Mr Paech) who has been appointed as our year 4-7 (Primary Years) Assistant Principal from 2013 to 2017. Ben will work with our years 4-7 staff and be the second point of contact for parent concerns after the class teacher. Both Sue and Ben are excited about their appointments and look forward to meeting many of our REC families in the near future.

I’d also like to welcome a number of contract staff back and new staff to REC. We welcome back Shari Lush, Elke Schipanski, Michelle Lee and Heidi Warnes. We warmly welcome newly appointed staff Rebecca Semler, Penny Harris, Deb Walsh and Min Spry. Already the EY and PY team have a calm and friendly feel and I know we are going to have a great year!

A couple of reminders and changes for 2013:

• Please remind children of our “no hat no play” policy. This means that children without a uniformed hat will be required to sit out of play under the shelter of the yard for the duration of play time. This is the same expectation for their PE lessons unless inside the Byards Gym (BER). This applies to term 1 and 4 of each school year.

• For safety (in particular with our building works) we have asked all teachers to open their classrooms from 8:30am so children will be allowed on site from 8:30am but not to play as there will be no yard supervision before or after school. We are asking parents to promptly pick their children up from the classroom or a designated spot as close to 3pm as possible as again there will be no after school yard supervision. After 3:15pm students will be bought to the office by leadership and a parent phoned for collection or OSHC will be negotiated. To clarify, there will be no teachers supervising our yard between 8:30-8:45am and 3-3:15pm. If parents wish to supervise play after school then naturally their children are their responsibility!

• DECD is committed to ensuring that volunteers working in our schools are encouraged and supported. At REC we acknowledge and value the contribution of our volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer in our classrooms and or school please talk to the REC College Coffee Club members and or your child’s class teacher. All volunteers require a Criminal History Screening Check to be undertaken before commencing to volunteer in DECD sites. Beverley has more info at the Primary Front Office as to how you can obtain a DECD Criminal History and Screening Check. Further information is also available by phoning DECD on 8226 0430 or through the DECD website under “How to apply for a check”. Volunteers must be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses therefore REC will pay for the DECD Criminal History and Screening Check.

We also have new names for our buildings. Gone are the colours in reference to units that are no longer that colour! Please support children in learning the new names and soon we will have some signage up to assist us.

The Names are as follows:

McClure (Orange) Glencoe (Green)

Hewlett (Aqua, Purple, White) Ramsey (Red)

Braes (Blue) Fergusson (Admin)

Solero (Dance, Japanese, Learning Support)

We are awaiting the name of the ‘new’ preschool- watch this space!

During week zero before the students returned to REC the P-7 staff shared ideas based around our REC values and motto to ensure we all have a settled and consistent start to the school year. As P-7 leaders we led the staff in discussions and practice around developing positive relationships with their students and how we can improve learning outcomes through establishing a classroom culture that is inclusive and supportive to all students. Included are some pictures of class displays from our REC Week 1. We hope this gives you a taste of the great learning for the year to come!

Looking forward to a successful year!

Beck Truran P-7 Deputy Principal Reynella East College

MUSIC 2013

Instrumental music lessons are now underway, with students across the College (Years 3-12) participating. Reynella East College has a wide range of instruments available for tuition - Guitar, Voice, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin, Piano and Percussion.

The Instrumental Music Service (DECD) provides us with 6 specialist teachers and this year they are:

Guitar – Kent Taylor

Woodwind – Catherine Kammermann, Len Shelley

Brass – Sonia Radford

Voice – Danny Helps

Percussion – David Hopgood

REC supplements this allocation with private providers (fees involved). This year we have, again, employed Kathy Bickley for Piano and Tom Helps for Violin.

There are still some vacancies in Violin, Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone lessons. Students wishing to take up Trumpet or Trombone may do so free of charge. If any students are interested please see Katrina Rycroft or Sue Harding in the music department.

The various ensembles running this year include the Reynella East College Band, conducted by Katrina Rycroft, who rehearse every Wednesday morning from 8.00am – 9.00am, Choir, conducted by Tessa Jarvis and accompanied by Sue Harding, who rehearse every Tuesday at lunchtime and Percussion Ensemble, conducted by David Hopgood, who rehearse every Thursday at lunchtime. This year we hope to begin a Flute Quartet group instructed by Len Shelley. All Instrumental and Special Music students are expected to participate in an ensemble to support their learning on their chosen instrument.

During the year the Music department holds various “Musical Nights” for all students to present what they have been learning in class and with their instrumental teachers. All friends, family and the school community are welcome to attend.

CROSS CURRICULARCross Curricular through Home EconomicsIn Home Economics we offer Child Studies, Food and Hospitality and Textiles. As a faculty we believe that the more real life experiences we can offer our students the more positive our learning outcomes will be and the students respond very favourably to this approach.

Child Studies is offered from year 10 through to year 12 and as a subject it is a popular choice for students. Melissa Hill who is the Coordinator for the Pre-school has welcomed our students into the area to work with the younger children. She has also willingly offered her time and expertise in presenting to the high school students to provide a perspective relevant to the youngsters and to the courses offered by the high school. The year 11 and 12 Child Studies classes took the opportunity to work on topics such as play and technology, Healthy Tucker Boxes and early childhood development. Melissa has been a willing participant and a valuable resource and we thank her for her passion and enthusiasm.

The year 3 / 4 class under the guidance of Sue Bradley and in collaboration with the year 12 Child Studies class, cover a unit on safety with the year 12’s teaching the safe use of a piece of kitchen equipment through making a healthy recipe with the children, in the high school kitchen. This collaborative approach benefits both groups of students and the youngsters are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with their parents and siblings.

Other activities that contribute to the learning of our students include preparing food for the primary school through Year 12 Food and hospitality. In addition, the year 11 Food and Hospitality and Chef in the Making students have been involved in working in the school canteens. (See a previous newsletter).

The year 10 Food and Culture students work in groups to interview primary school children to gain valuable information on themed celebrations.

Technology drawers on the expertise of Gayle Sutter to present to students in year 11 and 12 and Kirsty Monssen shares her knowledge of providing food using government initiatives such as the right bite strategy with the senior students.

The collaboration that occurs across the various areas is a tribute to the enthusiasm and the commitment of the home economics staff to continually review and improve their courses in consultation with students and at all times working within the SACE guidelines.
