Reasons to Relay! Lansing Relay for Life. A new city and a familiar event. LANSING JAYCEES JUNE 2011

The Lansing Jaycees constantly give of themselves in everything we do. Lansing Relay was no different. Lauren Leeds’ husband, Michael Leeds, painstakingly crafted homemade marshmallows for the incredible s’mores fundraiser! Abby ensured there many new things to try with your melty charred marshmallow, graham cracker and chocolate combination … including peanut butter, bananas, strawberries, and Reese’s cups. The conversations around the fire were full of light and fun. My husband even found his purpose in tending to the s’more fire. After I stuffed two delicious s’mores into my maw, we headed home for the night. I returned the next morning to walk my scheduled 6 a.m. lap. First, I greeted my bleary-eyed captain – still smiling and setting out her incredible fruit kabobs! Then I took my quiet morning lap. It really gave me time to reflect on why we do Relay. We have all been touched by cancer, whether it claimed the life of a family member or friend, or if we know a survivor or are a survivor ourselves. Relay and the Lansing Jaycees are all about community support. This feeling was pervasive throughout the 24 hour event. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Lansing Relay for Life!

Thanks to all our supporters, walkers and survivors! The chapter raised more than

$1,500 to help the American Cancer Society create a world with more birthdays. It’s never too soon to start planning for next

year’s Relay for Life team. Have an idea? Want to help plan this event? Contact

either Abby Siegel or Lauren Leeds for more information on how you can help make next year’s event an even more

successful event!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

AA MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM TTHHEE LLAANNSSIINNGG JJAAYYCCEEEESS 8833rrdd PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT It seems like more and more people are experiencing a fair amount of uncertainty these days. Last year around this time, Kiplinger named Lansing one of the “10 Great Cities for Young Adults.” The news today is showing that we are seeing signs of the phenomena known as brain drain. There are early indicators that new or recent college graduates (21-34 year olds) are not finding adequate employment in the area and are relocating to other areas. I think it is fair to say that the majority of our members have experienced this first hand. We have had several members move to other areas after an unsuccessful job search in this area. Fortunately, I have been able to stay in touch with many of the members that have moved out of the area. On a frequent basis I hear stories about how being involved with the Jaycees has made the transition to a new city, state or country more manageable. Do you know somebody that has used the Chairperson’s Planning Guide (CPG) to help organize a move? Or use the confidence gained at Jaycees events to meet new people? I have also heard stories from members and prospects that immediately joined the local Jaycees in their new city and were relieved to have a familiar group in a new location. One of common reasons for non-renewal from members is they may be moving or are not sure what is going on with their job. One thing to keep in mind if you find yourself in this position is to embrace the benefits of the Jaycees. The programming our organization offers is intended to help prepare our members with leadership skills that can be applied to every aspect of your life. Now is a great time to expand your comfort zone. We have several exciting committees and events coming up. If you are fearful of losing your job, now may be a good time to attend a resume workshop or start to network. If you are in a position where you may be taking on more responsibility, start by co-chairing or chairing a project. If you find you are having a hard time prioritizing your time and reaching goals, find out more about Passport to Leadership and create a new goal for yourself. The Jaycees offer the perfect environment to try new things that can help you cope with the changes that may be in your future. Who knows, you may be able to apply the skills you have learned a help carve out a new path down the road to success. “Courage — not complacency — is our need today. Leadership not salesmanship.” — John F. Kennedy Sincerely, Angela M. Fossi

Hy Giessenbier (founder of the Jaycees) felt that in order for young people to improve their prospects for social and career advancements they would first have to join forces socially. This thought has been expressed throughout all aspects of our lives in many different ways. “All for one and one for all,” or “Many hands make for light work.” We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. When it comes to groups, I am so pleased to be part of the Lansing Jaycees. I have only been a member since 2009 but am overwhelmed with how much I have learned, how many great people I have meet, how much I have accomplished, and how much I have grown professionally and personally. I wouldn’t be here and so far without the Lansing Jaycees and its members. The Lansing Jaycees strive to provide its members with every tool possible to become a leader, community activist and so much more. If there is ever anything that you believe would help YOU grow or experience something new, don’t hesitate to bring that idea forward. Also, remember to “share the wealth.” Tell your family, friends, coworkers, etc., about the Lansing Jaycees and all that they can do and accomplish in this unbelievable organization.

A First Time for Everything

We’ve all had a chance to be a first timer in our lives. For everything we’ve done there had to have been a first time we did it. Our first breath, our first step, our first kiss, our first taste of bacon, these are some of the big ones. Some of our first time events are unforgettable, others happened when we were too young to ever remember. I recently got to go to Boyne for my first Michigan Jaycee convention, and this is a first time event I will never forget. I am submitting this article to the Capitol Correspondent for the benefit of all of you “no timers.” I hope to give you an idea of what you’re missing out on, and to inspire you to stop missing it. There’s a certain rush of excitement that comes with exploring the unknown. I rode up to Boyne with two seasoned pros, Ilona Hajdar and Mike Castelein. Rolling in to the resort was old hat for these convention veterans, but I had no idea what was going on. Where do I check in? Where’s my condo? Where’s your condo? When do I get a beer? These were just some of the questions rolling through my head while I tried to take everything in. But these are the uncertainties that make a new experience fun. As I familiarized myself with the location, I was able to relax a bit more. I went to the convention check in desk, got my wrist band and goody bag. The big question then became, when does “first timers” start? The first timers’ competition is a great way to meet many new people. I will explain the competition for any of you that may be hearing about first timers for the first time. Each first timer is given a packet and a little booklet. The

booklet is full of information about the Jaycees and the packet is full of places for people to sign their names under different categories, and a short quiz about the information in the booklet. Each signature is worth a certain number of points, depending on where the signature is. There are categories for all the different positions from Senator to General Member and all stops in between. The first timer with the most points at the end of the night wins. I didn’t get too wrapped up in this activity myself. We only got a couple of hours to gather signatures, and I was more interested in meeting people at my own pace. Still though, it was a great way for me to learn about all the different positions in the Jaycees. (I never knew we had senators.) It didn’t take long for me to figure out that Saturday was going to be BUSY. It all begins with the training sessions, and this was probably the most important part of my weekend. Every session I attended, I left

Charlie Root, who was a first-timer, and Lansing Jaycees Membership Vice President Ilona Hajdar were all smiles at the Boyne Convention.

Michigan Jaycees Community Vice President Angela Clock and Ilona Hajdar pose for a photo with Dave Worthams, 87th President of the Michigan Jaycees, at the Boyne Convention.

with great new ideas, and new energy to bring back to our local chapter. I learned the finer points of running a haunted house; I learned about the importance of new members in the Jaycees, I even learned how to fill out one of those CPG (Chairperson’s Planning Guide) thingies I’d heard so much about. Next up was the Awards Luncheon and business meeting. I’ve been told that in the past the business meeting would happen at 8 a.m. on Saturday. This time it was scheduled for just after lunch. This may have been the best idea in Jaycee history. Seriously, somebody should get an award for that idea. The business meeting was an opportunity for all of the State Board members to give their reports for the first quarter, and announce some nominees for awards to be given out later that night. After lunch, I attended a team building training session. We learned a few team building exercises that, believe it or not, weren’t hokey at all. The activities were fun and challenging and each delivered a good message for improving team work. At this point, my brain was brimming with ideas for chapter activities, fund raisers, and membership events. Saturday evening was the Presidential Ball, and Saturday night party. At the Presidential Ball all of the awards for Chapter of the Quarter were given away. There are several different categories for Chapter of the Quarter awards. This is when you get to see all of the cool events and projects the other chapters in the state have worked on. Learning about what other Jaycees are doing is a fantastic way to come up with similar, but different, projects for our own local chapter. After the awards there was a little time to change in to our dancing shoes. The dance was a great time. I spent some time talking to my new found friends in the Adrian Jaycees, I spent a little time dancing, and I got to see some patented Mike Castelein stanky leg. I also found some time to sneak a few beers in here and there. After a brief visit from the doughnut fairy on Sunday morning, I was ready to head back home. My head was still spinning from all of the great new information I picked up, and all of the new ideas that were coming from that new knowledge. I think this is the most important aspect of doing things for the first time. No matter what it is, whether you love it or hate it, you will learn something. That is why it will always be better to regret doing something than having not done something. If you go to one of our quarterly conventions and find that it’s not for you, good. Now at least you know. But, you will never know until you try.

Do you like doing things for someone else, regardless of whether or not you’ll get any credit? Well, then it’s time to put your thinking cap on and help plan a Lansing Ninjas guest mission for the Lansing Jaycees to tackle. The Lansing Ninjas are a band of four individuals who keep their identities a secret while performing random acts of kindness around the greater Lansing area. Check out their blog at: www.lansingninjas.wordpress.com.

Angela Clock, Abby Siegel and I recently conducted an impromptu mission where we handed out free coffee to participants and spectators at the Lansing Memorial Day Parade. Needless to say, it was a rewarding experience and we cannot wait to do our next mission. What is the next mission you ask? That’s where you come in. We’d like to hear

your ideas for spreading the love in Lansing. Keep your eyes peeled for information on a brainstorming meeting, or feel free to drop Abby or me an email with your ideas.

Have an idea? Last year, the Haiti earthquake happened. After the disaster, I was talking to my mom, and she informed me we had a family friend with ties to a hospital outside of Haiti’s capitol. If I wanted to do something, or send money down to the island, my mom could get me the contact information for the hospital to donate to. Later that night, I was out with a group of Jaycees. I mentioned the conversation I had with my mom and within a week something happened. Andrea Hoard contacted me to co-chair an event to raise money for Haiti. Thus, “Comedy for a Cause: Helping Haiti” was born. Andrea guided me through the process of chairing and helped make contacts and set dates. It was just that easy to start a project! I opened my mouth with an idea and people wanted to help! If you have an idea for a project, talk to a board member. Ask me! Ask a more seasoned Jaycee! If we don't have the answer, we'll find it for you!

On May 19, 18 members of the Lansing Jaycees, Heidi Hansen of Charlotte Jaycees, George Gostias of Livonia Jaycees, Dave Worthams the 87th Michigan Jaycee President from Kalamazoo, and 29 friends and guests attended Connxtions Comedy Club to have a laugh and raise funds for JCI - Operation Home: Japanese Relief Fund. More than $530 was raised to aid individuals impacted by the Japanese earthquake, hurricane and nuclear disaster. Those who attended had a great time and co-chair Brittany Gray, Region D Director Andrea Hoard, and Individual

Development Vice President Dan Harris had a pie tossed into their face. On June 2, Chad Williams, Andrew Hoard, and Dan Harris had a great time playing a round of golf at Ironwood Links golf course. We all were challenged

by the second hold, a short par 3 peninsula green, accidently pitching a couple of golf balls into water. We all agreed that we should have another golf game later in the year and try the wooded back nine holes there. Upcoming events include a Nothing But Nets committee meeting June 23 at Reno’s West, a professional image workshop hosted by Shelly Davis Meilock on July 27 at 6 p.m. We also have a Get Your Food On event at the Melting Pot in Ann Arbor scheduled for August, and are finalizing details on a series of events where you can lean to play cricket. Watch for evites, the weekly Juice, and future newsletter articles regarding these events.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression! When I was deciding what to write about in this month’s newsletter, first impressions kept nagging at me. That topic then made me think about the old Head and Shoulders commercial that said “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” How true!

How many times have you decided on a future with a person, organization or an employer based on your first impression of them? I can safely assume most of the time. There have been times you decide it’s a great fit and there are times that you decide never to go back or that you’re not interested. What does this have to do with the Lansing Jaycees? As a group, we have to make sure that every time a new person comes to our meetings, events or committee meetings, we show them how great the Lansing Jaycees are. As individuals, we need to make sure that we’re putting our best foot forward and promoting the organization, not tearing it down.

One of the best compliments I have ever gotten was that as president in 2009, I was always “on.” Regardless of how tired I was, if I had a bad day at work or just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, I always made sure to be positive at chapter events. As members of the Lansing Jaycees, we are the ambassadors of the organization. We’re a membership based organization and we are responsible for making new and seasoned members feel welcomed, regardless of how often we show up. Most of us don’t want to join an organization that people are negative about, so why would prospects? So, keep a smile on your face, promote the Lansing Jaycees and the great things we do in the community. If we do this, we will continue to grow and make an even bigger impact in the Greater Lansing area.

The Lansing Jaycees will soon be updating our Chapter Plan. The Chapter Plan, like a company Business Plan, helps to guide the chapter throughout the year. It does this by setting chapter goals for the year, and determining long-term goals to achieve over the course of 3 to 5 years. There are goals for each of our areas of opportunity. Some of these are intuitive: grow membership, hold events, put on chapter meetings, others include things like creating a yearly budget, setting fundraising goals for the chapter, and creating publications like this newsletter. Many of the components of the Chapter Plan are also developed by the member surveys that were done at the beginning of the year.

The Chapter Plan is a living document and changes as the year progresses, as more member feedback is received and events are held. So keep in mind when we are requesting feedback and information we are listening and trying to plan chapter activities accordingly. The best way for us to do this is for our membership to stay involved and let members of the Board know what they are interested in. In an effort to make this opportunity easier, we have changed our General Membership Meetings (GMM) a bit, so stop by if you have not been to a GMM in a while.

This allows for a great opportunity to get together with friends and check out good food from area favorite restaurants. So, join us for the Grub Crawl!

Can you believe it, the year is about half over. The Lansing Jaycees have done some wonderful things and I know there are more to come. That being said, remember to take time for you this summer. It doesn’t have to be a lot, just some “me” time. Go for a walk, read a book, take a day trip to the lake, call up a fellow Jaycee to have dinner and a movie or grill some s’mores. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it is something you WANT to do, not have to do. Michigan has some great activities to participate in as does the Greater Lansing area. You can bike or walk on a trail, rent a kayak or canoe, rent a sailboat (Lake Lansing), visit one of many museums, catch a sporting event or just visit the downtown of one of our many quaint villages. Summer is the time to explore, the time to get outside and live for yourself. There are also many community service things you can do on your own (although we love to do them as a group as well). Head to the Humane Society and spend some time with a cat or dog, lookup a local Habitat for Humanity site and help out, get in touch with a local festival and volunteer when needed or just go to a park and pick up the trash. Whatever you decide to do doesn’t have to be huge to have a huge impact. It’s summer, get out there and get moving for yourself.

Leadership. Citizenship. Membership. Friendship. These words are associated with the work of the Jaycees in immeasurable ways. Most of us have experienced some form of each of these characteristics in our endeavors as we participated in Jaycees events. Through our participation, we continue to grow these characteristics not only within ourselves, but also within our organization. Leadership We build leaders through participation in training events, by allowing members to chair their own social or community events, and through encouraging our members to expand beyond their comfort zone. Being a leader does not mean we always succeed without problems, it means we succeed in spite of the problems that arise. Citizenship Jaycee members participate in citizenship through a number of events that give back to the community. Some events, such as Stuff the Bus or Easter Egg Hunt, create first-hand experience with citizenship and community service. Others will travel generations before the sense of accomplishment occurs. In both cases, providing to the community is key, and is why we do what we do. Membership Being a part of something bigger than you is a component of what drives us forward. We have a synergistic energy in our organization; we feed off each other’s passions in order to accomplish a bigger goal than we expected. Without members such as you, we could not accomplish half of what we do. Friendship Perhaps the best reward for participating in the Jaycees, friendship is what we all gain when we surround ourselves with those who share a similar goal. It is these friendships that keep us involved and allow us to achieve more than we believed possible. Perhaps the friendships gained and the support given are the most vital part of our organization. Without friends like you, who I met as a member of the Jaycees, I would not have had the courage to move to Canada. And, knowing I will always have your friendship and support keeps me going here in Edmonton. So, while I say “See You Later” to the many friends I have here in Lansing and Michigan, I look forward to meeting the new friends I am sure I will gain while participating in Edmonton Jaycee events (yep, they have one here, too!). Keep in touch, eh!
