brighter days. In Thailand it is a time when things are cooling down, the start of the green season. It is a turning point in the year when things are changing. A new beginning. This is why, with the June issue of RL Magazine, our team has also decided to start a new chapter. We’re now presenting a new series of interviews, starting with managers from some of the best hotels in Phuket. In our latest issue you’ll meet the General Managers of Laguna hotels. You will also be introduced to the world of Russian cinema. Two of Russia’s most famous superstars, Dudina Elena and Anatoly Rudenko, sat down with us to discuss their love of Phuket. You’ll also learn about the major scandals of the Cannes Film Festival, which was held in May, and you’ll also get acquainted with the best Thai movies coming out this year, which were very popular with a lot of movie making maestros, such as Quentin Tarantino. Phuket is definitely a place for cinema, with so many big Hollywood movies being filmed in its amazingly beautiful locations. The future of Cinema in Phuket is very bright, as are most other things here. В августе на Пхукете пройдет традиционный фестиваль голодных духов,

который в Таиланде носит название Por Tor по имени одного из самых

сильных божеств в китайской мифологии. Центр праздника – Пхукет-Та-

ун, где пройдут уличные шествия. Местные торговцы предложат гостям

фестиваля различные сладости, жареное на углях мясо. В дни фестиваля

рекомендуем нанести визит на рынок на Ranong Rd., известный как Fresh

Market и улицу Talang Road, которая по праву считается сердцем ста-

рого города. Обязательным будет заглянуть и в китайский храм Por Tor

Kong Shrine. Как правило, поход в храм и подношение даров божествам

Por Tor (Hungry Ghost) Festival

The 9th Multihull Regatta featuring Performance Multihulls, Corsairs and Firefly 850 One Designs and Cruising Multihulls, will take place in July. Catamarans and trimarans will grace the waters of Chalong Bay during the three-day event. The host venue is Phuket Yacht Club with three parties and prize-giving ceremonies held there.

The 'Hungry Ghosts' festival is an important merit-making event for ethnic Chinese. Special food, flowers and candles are offered to ancestors' altars to 'feed the ghosts' that are said to have been released from hell for the month. Relatives pay their respects and appease them with gifts of food with turtle cakes being the most popular offerings. The turtle symbolises longevity and by giving these cakes, the worshippers believe they will prolong their own lives.

This recipe is inspired by my time in Hawaii. Although the original version had mandarin orange being here in Thailand we are blessed with

beautiful mangoes. This is a light and easy recipe, and a popular dish at Taste Bar and Grill both for lunch and dinner.

Grilled Mango Chicken Salad

What you need:Red and Green oak lettuceCherry tomatoes MangoCashew nutsChicken breastWanton strips

Mix all ingredients for dressing in a bowl and wisk. On the plate put lettuce, tomatoes halved, mangoes cubed, roasted cashewnuts. Grill the chicken breast on a hot grill until done about 6minutes. Fry some wonton strips in oil and set aside on a paper towel lined bowl. Slice chicken and put on top of the salad and pour the desired amount of dressing and finally top with some crispy wonton strips. Enjoy!

Ингредиенты:

Листья красного и зеленого салата

Томаты черри

Манго

Кешью

Куриная грудка

Полоски вонтон (жареное тесто)

Смешайте все ингредиенты соуса в отдельной небольшой миске. На тарелку выложите

листья салата, порезанные пополам томаты черри, нарезанный кубиками манго и жаре-

ные орехи кешью. Приготовьте куриную грудку на гриле (около 6 минут). Пожарьте

вонтонские полоски и отложите на бумажное полотенце, чтобы оно впитало лишнее

масло. Порежьте крупной соломкой грудку и положите поверх салата, затем полейте

сделанным заранее соусом и украсьте полосками вонтона. Ваш салат с манго и куриной

грудкой готов. Приятного аппетита!

Top 5 Scandals in Cannes Film FestivalCannes has been a hotbed of controversy since the beginning. The first festival, organized in 1939 as a response to

the Venice Film Festival - then a vehicle for Nazi propaganda movies - had to be canceled after it launched on the day WWII broke out. The festival returned in 1946 and has since been a fertile ground for taboo-breaking films, wannabes

disrobing for a shot at fame, public spats between directors and critics and publicity stunts gone wrong.

Heelgate (2015)The festival received backlash from film fans and feminists after a group of 50-year-old women were turned away from the red carpet for not wearing high heels. Some of the women were wearing flat shoes due to medical conditions, and the act sparked a huge reaction on social media. British actress Emily Blunt, whose film Sicario was in competition, commented: "Everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn't wear high heels."

Lars von Trier announces that he's a Nazi (2011)No stranger to controversy at Cannes, Lars von Trier was banned from the festival after declaring himself a Nazi at a press conference for his film Melancholia. "I understand Hitler," he said. "He did some wrong things, absolutely, but I can see him sitting there in his bunker at the end ... I sympathise with him, yes, a little bit." Although he later insisted that the comments had been made in jest, this was not the first time Von Trier had spoken out at Cannes, labelling Roman Polanski a "midget" at the festival in 1999, and stating that Björk "would never act again" after her performance in Dancer in the Dark in 2000.

Publicity-hungry starlet Simone Silva took her top off during a photo shoot with Hollywood star Robert Mitchum and briefly made global headlines during an infamous incident at the 1954 festival. The British B-movie actress and glamor model turned up on the Croisette looking for exposure and was quickly crowned "Miss Festival" by organizers who set the photo shoot up for her on the beach. "The photographers got down on their knees to plead with me to take the top off," she was quoted as saying in Ohio newspaper, The Daily Reporter. She did, removing her flimsy scarf top and cuddling up to Robert Mitchum, in just a grass skirt and covering her breasts with her hands. In the ensuing scrum three photographers fell into the Mediterranean, a fourth broke his ankle and another suffered a fractured elbow.

Irréversible leaves audience members requiring medical attention (2002)Gaspar Noé's divisive drama not only caused 250 people in the audience to walk out of its Cannes debut, but some had to be administered oxygen after passing out. Containing graphic scenes of murder and rape, Irréversible received a standing ovation from the remaining viewers, although not leading man Vincent Cassel's brother, who was so affected by the content that he interrupted the screening to shout threats at the director across the cinema.

In 1961, the Spaniard filmmaker Luis Buñuel created a political scandal after he presented his movie Vidriana in the Festival. After his return to Spain - under Franco's dictatorship - and a government authorization to produce a movie in his country, the prolific director did his best to win The Golden Palm. However, after the euphoric happiness of the authorities for winning award, it was discovered that the film revealed the worst of Franco's regime. Buñuel had to exile forthwith again.

Впрочем, Триер и Ноэ – не первые скандали-

сты в истории фестиваля. Возможно, каннская

пальма первенства в этом вопросе принадлежит

Луису Бунюэлю, представившему в Каннах в

1961 году свой фильм «Виридиана», в котором

фигурируют инцест, пародия на Тайную вечерю,

складной нож в форме распятия и попытка

изнасилования. Консервативно настроенная

часть зрителей была возмущена. Тем не менее,

«Виридиана» разделила главный приз с картиной

правда, к показу во франкистской Испании ее

The Man With the Golden GunShot in 1974, The Man with the Golden Gun is the ninth James Bond movie. Featuring Roger Moore as the hero James Bond, and Christopher Lee as the villain Francisco Scaramanga, the film was predominantly shot in Asia: Hong Kong, Macau, and Thailand. One of Scaramanga's secret bases is hidden in Koh Ping Khan in magnificent Phang Nga Bay. The islet has since been renamed James Bond Island and is a popular landmark, everyday visited by hordes of tourists.

Heaven & EarthShot in 1993, Heaven & Earth is a superb film by Oliver Stone about the Vietnam War and its consequences. Based on a true story written by Le Ly Hayslip (played by Hiep Thi Le in the movie), the plot relates the life of a young Vietnamese woman and her march through the horrors of history, from Vietnam to America and back.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of ReasonShot in 2004 and directed by Beeban Kidron, this sequel to the successful Bridget Jones's Diary reunites the same cast members: Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Colin Firth as Mark Darcy, and Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver.This time, the movie's plot takes them to Bangkok (some scenes were shot along the infamous Soi Cowboy), to Phuket Island (Phuket International Airport and Nai Yang Beach appear in the movie), and Phang Nga Bay (the romantic cruise scenes were shot off Panyee Island).

всего мира на Пхукет. Кстати, отель BackPacker, в котором останав-

ливается главный герой фильма находится в Пхукет-Тауне на Пангнга

роуд, а не в Бангкоке, как об этом говорят в фильме. Его настоящее

название - The Memory at On-On.

«Человек с золотым пистолетом» Один из фильмов бондианы, а именно, «Человек с золотым писто-

летом» снимался в провинции Пхангнга рядом с Пхукетом. Именно

благодаря фильму «Человек с золотым пистолетом» приобрел боль-

шую популярность так называемый остров Джеймса Бонда. Кстати,

настоящее название отрова Ко Тапу, что означает гвоздик.

«Небо и Земля»Фильм «Небо и Земля» Оливера Стоуна - прекрасный образчик

картины о Вьетнамской войне и ее последствиях. Дом в стиле китай-

ско-португальской архитектуры, показанный в кино (Baan Chinpracha),

является открытым для туристов и расположен в Пхукет-Тауне. Сцены

вьетнамской сельской жизни снимали в провинции Краби, в двух часах

езды из Пхукета.

Phuket-based film «Patong Girl» won the coveted Grimme Prize for the best fiction/special category for 2016. Directed by Susanna Salonen, «Patong Girl» was created by De Warrenne Pictures Co Ltd, founded by Waller in 2004. The studio is responsible for producing award-winning films such as The Last Executioner, Mindfulness and Murder, Soi Cowboy, The Elephant King, Ghost of Mae Nak and Butterfly Man.

«Miss Suwanna of Siam» was a 1923 romance film written and directed by Henry MacRae, set in Thailand (then Siam) and starring Thai actors. It was one of the first feature films to be made in Thailand, and was the first Hollywood co-production in Thailand. Unfortunately, nothing of the film exists today except for some promotional materials and other ephemera held at the Thailand National Film Archive.

«Black Silk» is a 1961 Thai crime drama film written and directed by Rattana Pestonji. Considered the first Thai film noir, Black Silk was also among the first Thai films to be exhibited at overseas film festivals, screening at the 11th Berlin International Film Festival in 1961. In the 2000s, the film was featured in retrospective programs at the Bangkok International Film Festival, the Singapore International Film Festival and the 2005 Pusan International Film Festival.

«Tropical Malady» is a 2004 Thai romantic psychological drama film written and directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It is a film in two segments - the first part a romance between two men, and the second a mysterious tale about a soldier lost in the woods, bedeviled by the spirit of a shaman. The film received generally poor reviews from such industry journals as Variety and Hollywood Reporter, but then won the Jury Prize from the jury at Cannes headed by Quentin Tarantino and has been generally met with favorable reviews since then. It was the first Thai film to be in the main competition at Cannes. It is also the first Thai film to win a prize at any of the top movie festivals.

«Mundane History», is a 2009 film by the female Thai film-maker Anocha Suwichakornpong. She wrote, co-produced and directed the film. It is described as «one of the most startling and original feature debuts of recent years», and received its world premiere on 10 October 2009 at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea. It was the first Thai film to receive the country's most restrictive viewing rating, due to a scene of full-frontal male nudity and masturbation. Mundane History won the Tiger Award at the 2010 International Film Festival Rotterdam.

It’s a place where you can be centred and experience the moment, a place of harmony. Over the past three years we have come to Phuket five times. We always miss the good food and smiles of the Thai people.ANATOLY: The Weather in Phuket is, of course, incredible. I always want to breathe in the delicious, warm, moist air.

THAIS LOVE FOOD. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL DISH?E: I love Thai food. After Italian food, it’s my favorite. I love shrimp in crispy noodles, I love the soups, salads with mango, scallops with mashed potatoes, mussels in garlic sauce. Everything here is delicious.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE?E: We know the areas of Bang Tao and Nai Harn well enough. For me, it's like two different islands, difficult to compare. But I prefer Bang Tao, because I really like the Laguna area. You can always feel free there.A: I really like the south beach of Nai Harn. It is possible to forget about all your problems there and you can really relax with your family.

SPEAKING OF FAMILY. DO YOU OFTEN MANAGE TO GET OUT ON VACATION TOGETHER?E: Not often, unfortunately, but once a year, for sure.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PARENTS. WHO ARE THEY? ARE THEY ASSOCIATED WITH THE THEATER AND MOVIES?E: My parents live here in Phuket. Wonderful people, I love them. But they are not in the acting world. So, they were shocked by my decision to become an actress.A: My parents are actors. Mama is Lubov Rudenko, an honored artist of Russia, she works in the Mayakovsky Theater, where I previously served, as did my wife. My father is Cyril, he left the theater and is in business now.

WHAT MADE YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ACTING?E: I decided to become an actress after two years of being in

the theatrical circle in high school. I realized that if I didn’t try, I would definitely regret it. After school there was a year of serious training. I had no fear, I was so daring and confident.

DID YOU MEET EACH OTHER AT WORK FOR THE FIRST TIME?A: We met on the set of the project "Yesterday, the war ended". It is a historical drama about post-war years and, of course, a love story. We definitely did not want to separate after shooting finished.

IT IS BELIEVED THAT ACTORS DON’T HAVE TIME FOR FAMILY LIFE. YOUR FAMILY IS A LIVING REFUTATION OF THIS STEREOTYPE. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO COMBINE WORK AND FAMILY?E: We’re very thoughtful when we plan our time together. We try to participate in joint projects. We like to work together.A: In our free time, we attend dance lessons. We love Tango dancing.

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS AND PURSUE AN ACTING CAREER?E: Milena has a very artistic and creative nature . She likes to be colorful. I would support her, whatever she chooses to do.A: It is difficult to say. But if Milena wants to be an actress, I would not be against it.

WHAT IN YOUR WORK BRINGS YOU THE MOST PLEASURE?E: I love people, I love watching them and communicating. I love the process of creating a movie. For me, it's magic.A: The ability to create characters. Human nature is fascinating, the reasons why we do the things we do. I like to express that in my performances.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF ROLE TO PLAY? E: Now I have a great need to work in the theater. I love to hear the breath of the audience, their laughter. I want to play a role in Macbeth by Shakespeare, Flaubert's Madame Bovary, Agrafena from "The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoevsky. I liked Robin Wright Claire Underwood’s role in the series "House of Cards". I would like to play a character like that in a subtle, sophisticated way.

телезрителей, а нам посчастливилось застать звездную семью во время отдыха на острове и поговорить о жизни, отдыхе, работе и мечтах.

ВЫ ОДНИ ИЗ САМЫХ ЧАСТЫХ ГОСТЕЙ ОСТРОВА ИЗ ЧИСЛА ЗВЕЗД РОССИЙСКОГО КИНО. ЧТО ЗАСТАВЛЯЕТ ВАС ВОЗВРАЩАТЬСЯ СЮДА СНОВА И СНОВА?ЕЛЕНА: Пхукет для меня – это абсолютная свобода. Из любимого - кре-ветки в хрустящей лапше (гун саронг –прим. ред.), суп том ка, салат с манго, гребешки с картофельным пюре, ракушки в чесночном соусе. Видите, одним любимым блюдом никак не обойтись!.

А ЛЮБИМЫЕ МЕСТА?Е: Мы знаем районы Банг-Тао и Найхарн достаточ-но хорошо. Для меня это как два разных острова. Сравнивать очень сложно. Но я предпочту Банг-Тао, потому что очень люблю Лагуну. Здесь можно сде-лать выбор: хочешь быть свободной - будь в сланцах и шортах, но если хочешь быть леди, всегда есть куда выйти в красивом образе.А: А я очень люблю юг, пляж Найхарн. Там по-на-стоящему можно забыть обо всем и отдыхать исклю-чительно семьей.

КСТАТИ, О СЕМЬЕ. ЧАСТО ЛИ ВАМ УДАЕТСЯ ВЫБРАТЬ-СЯ НА ОТДЫХ ВМЕСТЕ, ДА ЕЩЕ И С ДОЧЕРЬЮ?Е: Нечасто, к сожалению, но раз в год точно. Хоте-лось бы чаще, работаем в этом направлении.

РАССКАЖИТЕ НЕМНОГО О СВОИХ РОДИТЕЛЯХ. КТО ОНИ И СВЯЗАНЫ ЛИ ОНИ С ТЕАТРОМ И КИНО?Е: Мои родители живут здесь на Пхукете. Чудес-ные люди, я их люблю. Но никакого отношения к актерскому миру они не имеют. А потому, были шокированы мои решением стать артисткой.А: Мои родители - артисты. Мама - Любовь Руден-ко, заслуженная артистка России, работает в теа-тре Маяковского, где ранее служила и моя супруга тоже. Отец Кирилл Макеенко профессию оставил, сейчас занимается бизнесом.

Мои родители живут здесь на Пхукете. Чудесные люди, я их люблю. Но никакого

отношения к актерскому миру они не имеют. А потому, были шокированы

мои решением стать артисткой.

ПОМНИТЕ СВОИ ПЕРВЫЕ ШАГИ В АКТЕРСКОМ ИС-КУССТВЕ, КАК КАК ПРОХОДИЛИ ВАШИ ВСТУПИТЕЛЬ-НЫЕ?Е: Решение стать актрисой было осознанным после двух лет активной деятельности в школьном теа-тральном кружке в старших классах. Поняла , что если не попробую, то точно буду жалеть. Потом был год серьезной подготовки с поиском материала для вступительных. Помню первый тур в ГИТИС. Страха не было, такая я была дерзкая, смелая, уверенная. Я поступила сразу в ГИТИС, МХАТ, Щукинское и Щепкинские театральные училища. Выбрала МХАТ и Константина Райкина в качестве руководителя. Я почувствовала, что это мои стены , мои люди, мой мастер, моя судьба.А: Я решил стать актером сидя за кулисами спек-такля "Воительница", где участвовала моя мама и, волею судьбы, участвовал я в возрасте 17 лет. Тог-да я хотел поступать в академию туризма и вовсе не думал становиться артистом. Мама попросила выручить ее - участвовать в спектакле, на который уже были проданы билеты. По каким-то причинам, актер, игравший главную роль участвовать не мог. Я попробовал, мне понравилось. Это был настоя-щий полет.

ТО ЕСТЬ, ПОЗНАКОМИЛИСЬ ВЫ НА РАБОТЕ?А: Мы познакомились на съемочной площадке проекта "Вчера закончилась война". Это историческая драма о послевоенных годах и ,конечно, история любви. Кино сняли, а мы уже точно не захотели расставаться.

ПРИНЯТО СЧИТАТЬ, ЧТО АКТЕРАМ НЕКОГДА ЗАНИМАТЬСЯ СЕМЕЙ-НОЙ ЖИЗНЬЮ. ВАША СЕМЬЯ – ЖИВОЕ ОПРОВЕРЖЕНИЕ ЭТОГО СТЕ-РЕОТИПА. КАК ВАМ УДАЕТСЯ СОВМЕЩАТЬ РАБОТУ И СЕМЬЮ?Е: Грамотно планируем свое время. Стараемся участвовать в со-вместных проектах . Буквально недавно выпустили спектакль "Ло-вушка для новобрачных" (режиссер Виктор Супрун – прим. ред.). Ездим с ним на гастроли. I'M FROM THE USA ORIGINALLY. My mother is Italian and my father is Irish-American. I moved to Asia in 1997. I lived in Hong Kong for about 4 years. And I lived all over Asia for the past 18 years, so I’ve been everywhere, and then I moved to Phuket from Huangzhou a few years ago. I say I’m from the “Breaking Bad” state. Before I used to say just LA, because if I’d say Santa Fe, New Mexico they would never know where it is. Now I say “Just one hour north from the Breaking Bad city”. They say “Do you cook meth?” No, I don’t!

MY FATHER WAS A GM OF A HOTEL. I grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Caribbean, which was a great place to grow up. And then we moved to the States when I was 13.

I ALWAYS ENJOYED THE HOTEL BUSINESS – as a job, as a career, as a passion, as a fun thing to do. I usually wake up before the alarm, because I love what I do. We have 625 fantastic staff members and on some days over 1,000 wonderful guests. So it’s a fun thing to be in.

I LIVED IN KOREA, СHINA, PHILIPPINES, HONG KONG, SINGAPORE, MACAU, DUBAI, EGYPT. And I tell you Phuket is just a nice place to live. I enjoy to go down to the beach to watch the sunset. THE BANYAN TREE OFFERED ME A JOB IN CHINA but at that time I couldn’t join because of family issues. So when I moved here I moved to work with the Hilton Group and about a year and a half ago they contacted me and asked if I wanted to join Banyan Tree here in Phuket. They offered me this hotel. It was a no-brainer, very easy decision. And I said yes, I want to join the team.

I HAVE TO SAY THAT MY FAVORITE CUISINE IS ITALIAN, because my mother is Italian. But I would also say Korean, Chinese, southern Chinese, Thai and probably Japanese. So it’s mostly Asian food.

WHEN I GO BACK TO THE STATES to visit family I miss here, it’s because Asia is my home after 18 years.

IF I GO BACK TO THE US AND I GO TALK TO MY FRIENDS, doctors, lawyers, attorneys whatever they are, they talks about the same things we talked about the last time I saw them. It’s like I never left. Here we’re talking about so many different issues and so many exciting things. I just love it. I think it’s because we’re outside of our country, we’re not country focused.

I VISITED RUSSIA IN 1969. At that time US and Russia were big enemies. To go to Russia as a young man was an incredibly eye-opening experience. To see how lucky we were. There was nothing in the supermarkets, but people were happy. So I came back with a sense of appreciation of what we had in my own country.

I GO TO THE GYM THREE-FOUR TIMES A WEEK and I love wine, I’m really into wine. I am involved with some wine clubs here in Phuket and it’s fun. It’s a wonderful beverage. It’s a very social drink, it goes well with food. You won’t have a vodka tonic with your steak. And there is no other drink that can change so much through the years when you put it in a bottle.

I HAVE ABOUT 30 BOOKS ON MY KINDLE. Most of my favorite books are murder mysteries, CSI, CIS - this kind of stuff. Actually I have two kinds of favorite books. One is for relaxing and the other is for self-improvement.

I POSITION MYSELF AS A FATHER, COACH AND COUNCILOR to the staff. They do a great job, not because I ask them but because they want to and they don’t want to disappoint me. The worst thing they want to hear is that I’m disappointed. I think I’d classify myself as fair and consistent. And there are no special rules for certain people. I don’t ever yell. The only reason that would happen is because of a life safety issue or possibly theft.

I LEFT HOME AT 18 and after a couple of years at hotel school have been traveling ever since, living and working in locations such as Hawaii, Kuwait, Korea and Thailand. It’s truly been a great to have a chance to see a little of the world. My father who is from Italy moved to Ireland when he was quite young. He used to breed race horses there and as such I grew up in a farming community. I never really shared my father’s understanding and knowledge of horses, so it became apparent to me at an early age that I would probably not follow him in his chosen profession.

GROWING UP IN A FAIRLY SMALL COMMUNITY IN IRELAND also inspired me to dream about a life of travel and as a teenager I began to look at potential opportunities which could combine work and travel. A life in the military or diplomatic corps didn’t feel right to me and I began to think seriously about a life in hospitality.

LOOKING BACK, I WOULDN’T CHANGE MY DECISION and have no regrets. I have really enjoyed a life in hotels and the opportunities it has given me and my family.

I STUDIED IN SWITZERLAND FOR TWO AND HALF YEARS and it was a lot of fun but also a really good place to learn service fundamentals. While there we also had the opportunity to gain work experience and I spent 6 amazing months at a five star property in Geneva which really opened my eyes.

MY FIRST JOB AFTER HOTEL SCHOOL WAS AT THE WATERGATE HOTEL IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IN FOOD AND BEVERAGE. I was in Dublin at the time working for an international hotel company and they asked if I would be interested in working in America. I said “Absolutely, I’d love to”. This was a Tuesday I think and I had to leave on Saturday. So literally in four days I was on a plane on my way to US. It all happened so quickly that I arrived at JFK without a visa and the proper paperwork and thus remember spending some quality time in immigration.

WHILE IN THE US I WON A GREEN CARD IN THE ANNUAL LOTTERY PROGRAM BUT AT THE TIME I was young and crazy about a girl I knew in London, so didn’t actually stay long enough to receive it. I think we lasted together for about four weeks when I got back to the U.K. although I did end up meeting Annie my wife not long after when we worked together in a hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon so everything happens for a reason.

While in the US I won a Green Card in the annual lottery program but at the time I was

young and crazy about a girl I knew in London, so didn’t actually stay long enough to receive it. I think we lasted together for about four weeks

when I got back to the U.K.

WHILE I HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE TRAVEL BUG I HAVE NEVER REALLY SET A FIXED TIMELINE CAREER or destination wise and have just tried to stay focused on the job in hand. I know some of my friends and colleagues who have moved about a little too quickly always focused on the next opportunity rather than the here and now. I think I was lucky in the fact that I worked for a couple of General Managers both Dutch as it turned out who were great mentors to me and can clearly remember one of them telling me “don’t worry about the next job, the next job will find you”.

HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN ASIA and Thailand in particular has been fantastic and something I always aspired to do as hospitality and quality standards in this part of the world are extremely high. I have also found that if you take the time to be patient and understand the host culture, it can be a very rewarding work/life experience and one I wouldn’t change for anything.

BEING A LADY GM is something new for the island. But people accept me for what I am.

NO MATTER WHAT GENDER GM, we all want to achieve the same goals even though the approach might be different. I believe that women are more patient. My soft approach seems to work well. I get things done my way.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT MEN CAN DO AND WOMEN CAN NOT, except being a husband.

My previous GM position was in JW Marriot Bangkok. Peter Caprez, who is from there, is my idol. Before I left Marriot he taught me a last lesson, he said to me “WE CAME FROM THE OLD SCHOOL BUT THE WORLD HAS CHANGED, THE NEW GENERATION IS COMING UP AND YOU CANNOT CHANGE THEM BUT YOU CAN CHANGE YOURSELF.”.

WHEN YOU RUN А HOTEL THERE ARE TWO FACTORS TO MAKE IT SUCCESSFUL – hardware and software. By hardware I mean everything you can see and touch, while software means people. To be a good GM you have to be able to develop both components within the time frame and budget.

I SPEND 80% OF MY TIME IN THE HOTEL. Whenever I have an opportunity to take 20% off I conduct yoga classes for my team, swim a lot, enjoy working in the garden, painting, but most of all I enjoy shopping.

IF YOU WORK HARD YOU HAVE TO FIND TIME TO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF. I have a very big closet and the biggest shoes room ever. I like Tory Burch, Tod’s because the shoes are comfortable but when it comes to high heels I prefer Nine West, Louboutin. When it comes to bags I like Bottega because they;re always beautiful. Also I’m a great fan of Gucci.

I SPEND AT LEAST THREE HOURS WALKING AROUND THE RESORT, TALKING TO THE GUESTS EACH DAY. I like it and I learn a lot from them. We have a lot of customers who have been coming back to us for over 30 years and they’re able to tell me the

history of the hotel since the first day we opened the door.

ONE REASON WHY PEOPLE KEEP COMING BACK is what we call the Dusit Thai way of life. This is very important. Professional service can be anywhere in the world but true Thai hospitality makes the difference. We always go beyond the guests expectations.

IF I KNOW THAT SOMEONE IN MY RESORT IS NOT WELL, I’ll be there to meet the guest by myself.

I WORKED FOR LAGUNA OVER 20 YEARS AGO but I was based in Bangkok. I spent a few days in Phuket almost every week and I remember I couldn’t find Laguna without a map, as it was still a brand new destination.

PHUKET HAS EVERYTHING THAT I WANT. It’s perfect because if I have a chance during the weekend and feel like shopping, I go to Central. If I want to relax I jump into the boat and spend the whole day on one of the islands and afterwards I come back refreshed.

I DON’T WANT TO GO BACK TO BANGKOK, I don’t want to spend 4 hours a day in traffic and rush, rush, rush. When I used to wake up in Bangkok and go to the shower my towel would still be wet because I went to bed just 4 hours before that.

I’M LUCKY TO HAVE FULL SUPPORT FROM MY FAMILY. I’m a single mother and my son already received his Master degree in UK, he came home a few months ago. My parents are in Bangkok and that’s the only worry that I have because they’re getting old, but my brother and son are looking after them. I have enough freedom for work and I know that my family is proud of what I am doing.

I TURN EVERYTHING INTO A POSITIVE. If I fall, I will immediately stand up and move forward.

Женщина–генеральный менеджер - это что-то новое для Пхукета, но меня приняли здесь хорошо.

Будь то мужчина или женщина, руководители отеля преследуют одну цель, но способы ее достижения могут быть разными. Я думаю, женщины более терпеливы. Мой мягкий подход работает и я получаю то, что хочу.

Нет ни одной вещи, которую мужчина бы мог делать, а женщина – нет, разве что быть мужем.

Мой идол и бывший руководитель Питер Капрез, кото-рый до сих пор возглавляет JW Marriot в Бангкоке, сказал перед самым моим уходом очень важную вещь: «Мир изме-нился и выросло новое поколение, ты не можешь изменить его, но ты можешь изменить себя».

Если вы хотите сделать отель успешным, нужно учитывать два фактора – оборудование и «начинку». Под оборудованием я подразумеваю все, что вы видите в отеле и можете потрогать – столы, стулья и так далее. Под начинкой я подразумеваю людей. Чтобы быть хорошим GM, вы долж-ны уметь развивать оба направления в намеченные сроки с имеющимся у вас бюджетом.

80% времени я провожу в отеле. В оставшиеся 20% я веду занятия йогой для своей команды, плаваю, работаю в саду, рисую, но больше всего я люблю шоппинг.

Тот, кто много работает, должен находить время для себя. У меня огромная гардеробная и самая большая коллек-ция обуви. Я люблю бренды Tory Burch и Tod’s за удобство, но если речь заходит о каблкуках, то здесь я предпочту Nine West, иногда Louboutin.

Минимум три часа в день я провожу на ногах, осматри-

вая отель и общаясь с нашими гостями. Я узнаю от них много нового. Многие клиенты приезжают к нам по 30 лет подряд и знают историю отеля с самого первого дня открытия.

Одна из причин, по которой люди возвращаются к нам, это то, что мы называем Dusit thai лайфстайл. Это очень важно. Профессиональный сервис можно найти много где, но настоящее тайское гостеприимство – это нечто иное. Мы всегда предвосхищаем ожидания наших гостей.

Я работала в Лагуне 20 лет назад, но будучи при этом в Бангкоке. На Пхукет я летала раз в неделю. Помню, как приходилось искать с картой Банг-Тао и Лагуну, настолько это было новое направление.

На Пхукете есть все, что мне нужно. Это идеальное место: если я хочу пойти на щоппинг, я еду в Central Festival, а если мне нужно расслабиться, я сажусь в лодку и плыву до какого-нибудь острова и возвращаюсь с новыми силами.

Я не хочу возвращаться в Бангкок, проводить 4 часа в день в пробке и куда-то постоянно нестись.

Мне повезло, что моя семья меня полностью под-держивает. Я одна вырастила сына, он только закончил магистратуру в Великобритании и недавно вернулся домой. Единственное, что меня беспокоит, это мои родители. Они уже немолоды и живут в Бангкоке, но за ними присматривает мой брат, а теперь еще и сын.

Я смотрю на вещи позитивно. Если я потерплю пораже-ние, я тут же встану и продолжу идти вперед.

Когда-нибудь я опишу свой профессиональный опыт в мемуарах и это будет весело.

ORIGINALLY I’M FROM INDIA, I have relocated to Australia many years ago and that is where our kids were born and we have a home. My parents had nothing to do with the hospitality industry although they did give me a lot of the values that have earned me the relative success so far.

IN INDIA, IF YOU DON’T GET 95% OR MORE YOU HAVE NO CHANCE OF GETTING INTO THE TOP UNIVERSITIES and I was clearly not one of them. So I came upon the hospitality by chance and found that it suited my personality. Although being an introvert and loving food, I chose to specialize in the culinary field.

I HAVE DONE ABOUT 8 DIFFERENT ROLES IN MY 13 YEAR CAREER WITH BANYAN TREE and each one has challenged and taught me so many things and there are not many organizations that would afford such opportunities. I worked in India, Australia, Cambodia, been involved in projects around the globe – all the way from North Africa to South America to China.

IT’S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT but, more important to be nice.

I’D DESCRIBE MYSELF AS SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS THE EVERYDAY CHALLENGE and the leading a team to solve them creatively.

MY JOB IS TO DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL and gives an opportunity to make a difference.

MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO ME ARE family, home and work.

GM TELLS HIS FAVORITE JOKEThis is the cleanest one, I could remember!!A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree, but, I haven't got the energy". "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree. Management Lesson: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

ЗА 13 ЛЕТ РАБОТЫ В BANYAN TREE Я СМЕНИЛ 8 ДОЛЖНОСТЕЙ и каждая из них ставила меня перед вызо-вом и научила многим вещам, такая возможность выпадает не каждому.

Я ЖИЛ И РАБОТАЛ В ИНДИИ, АВСТРАЛИИ И КАМ-БОДЖЕ, развивал проекты по всему миру – от Северной Африки до Китая и Южной Америки.

GM BANYAN TREE РАССКАЗЫВАЕТ ЛЮБИМУЮ ШУТКУ- Индейка болтает и быком и говорит ему: «Я бы хотела забраться на верхушку того дерева, но у меня совсем нет сил». «Почему бы тебе не поклевать моего навоза, он богат полезными веществами, и у тебя появится энергия забраться на дерево», - предложил ей бык. Индейка склевала кучу навоза и с легкостью забралась на нижнюю ветку дере-ва. На следующий день индейка снова поклевала навоз быка и смогла забраться на вторую ветку, а повторив это на третий день, она на-конец смогла добраться до верхушки. Гордая и довольная собой птица только уселась на макушке дерева, как ее подстрелил фермер.- Чему учит эта история? Тому, что чушь может помочь забраться вам на самый верх, но уж точно не поможет там удержаться.

Главная регата Пхукета Phuket King’s Cup в третий раз признана лучшей регатой азиатского региона (Best Asian Regatta) на Asia Boating Awards 2016.

I've become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that's why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.

Globally people are criticizing our education systems, but we struggle to improve them. Should we start all over? If schools

and universities are doing such a good job to prepare young people for life, as they claim they do for many generations, why are we facing so many problems? Wars, religious conflicts, pollution, raising crime levels, corruption, divorces, increasing numbers of mental and bodily diseases. What we call modern inventions and life improvements are destroying us and our planet, but they are the result of our education systems. I am definitely not a pessimist, nor socialist nor a grinch, but I feel more and more destitute imagining the world, we are handing over to our children. Each generation has been saying this, but I am convinced today is different. If we continue to ignore climate change, the effects of all the plastic and garbage floating around in the seas, if we continue to measure success on share values and profit margins, feed our kids diets based on sugar and flower, kill creativity in schools instead of nurturing individuality, if the media continues to deliberately misinform us - if we continue to know all this, but are too complacent to do anything about this, we fail and the next generations will suffer.

What can we do to stop, what we know is wrong? There are many people out there trying to warn us, to open our eyes - and we agree with them, but we don't change nor act. Why is that? Is part of the reason, that we compare ourselves with all other creatures on earth and continue to believe that we are superior? Superior in what - improving nature's mediocrity? We see the results everywhere!Only tribes like sea gypsies or aborigines, who live in our views uneducated lives, are in sync with nature and in harmony with each other. They teach their children all essential life skills and allow them to make important experiences, like climbing trees, swimming in deep waters and playing in the mud. They are learning by doing, making real life experiences, carefully guided by the elderly. They are happy and mindful, until we introduce them to civilization. In my column, which I have been asked to write for the next months, I will focus on the relationship between adults and children and on what I believe should be basic fundamentals of our education systems. I believe, that we need to try fixing, what's wrong with us adults. But it is even more important, that we focus on next generations, so they have a chance, not to make the same mistakes we do.

Образовательные системы всего мира подвергаются критике,

пока мы пытаемся усовершенствовать их. Может, нужно

начать выстраивать образование заново? Если школы и универси-

теты делают свою работу настолько хорошо, насколько они сами

ее оценивают в течение многих поколений, почему человечество

продолжает сталкиваться с таким множеством проблем? Почему

в мире возникают войны, религиозные конфликты, экологические

проблемы, коррупция, разводы и болезни, в конце концов. Все,

что мы называем изобретениями и улучшением уровня жизни, раз-

рушает человечество и нашу планету, будучи при этом продук-

том, созданными выпускниками вузов.

Я ни в коем случае не пессимист и даже не социалист. Но меня

все больше беспокоит состояние мира, который мы передадим в

руки наших детей. Если мы продолжим игнорировать проблемы

изменения климата, загрязнения мирового океана, если продол-

жим измерять успех стоимостью акций и количеством прибыли,

уничтожать креативное мышление среди школьников и студентов

вместо того, чтобы развивать их индивидуальность, если СМИ

продолжат дезинформировать нас, а мы, в свою очередь, про-

должим осознавать это, но будем слишком самодовольны, чтобы

попытаться изменить положение вещей, нас ждет крах, а наши

потомки будут обречены на страдание.

Что мы можем сделать, чтобы остановить это? Некоторые

люди пытаются открыть нам глаза, и мы с ними соглашаемся, но

ничего не меняем. Почему это происходит? Может, потому что

мы сравниваем себя с другими людьми, и нам кажется, что мы

совершеннее? Но единственное, что мы совершенствуем – это

посредственность. И подтверждения тому повсюду!

Только племена и сообщества, вроде морских цыган или або-

ригенов, которые, по нашему мнению, необразованы, живут в

гармонии друг с другом и природой. Они учат своих детей всем

основным жизненным навыкам и дают им возможность получить

важный опыт, будь то лазание по деревьям, купание в глубоких

водах или игры в грязи. Они учатся, получая реальный жизненный

опыт и прислушиваясь к старшему поколению. Они умны и счаст-

ливы, пока мы не начинаем приобщать их к цивилизации.

В своей колонке для RL Magazine, которую я буду вести в

течение следующих месяцев, я сфокусируюсь на отношениях

между взрослыми и детьми, а также на вещах, которые, по моему

мнению, должные лежать в основе любой образовательной

системы. Я убежден, что мы, взрослые, должны исправить свои

ошибки. Но что еще важнее, мы должны сосредоточится на

подрастающем поколении и сделать все, чтобы у него был шанс

не повторять их.

HOW 7-ELEVEN CONQUERED THE WORLDAnyone who has ever come to Thailand will tell you that

there are more 7-elevens here than there are temples. It seems that there is one on nearly every street corner. No matter where you go in the land of smiles, there's sure to be a 7-eleven nearby.7-Eleven is the king of convenience stores all across the globe, with more than 21,000 stores in 18 countries. Currently, Japan is in the lead. It is now the largest licensee of 7 elevens in Asia. They sure must love their Slurpees in the land of the rising sun. Around six million people frequent 7 elevens all around the world, each day. It's not hard to see why, the blindingly lit stores have all the amenities one could need and are open at all hours for your convenience. 7-eleven came to Thailand on June 1st, 1989, nearly twenty seven years ago to this day. The first 7-eleven in Thailand popped up on the infamous Patpong Rd in Bangkok. Since then, they've been sprouting up like weeds all over the place. The one good thing about them is that they have air conditioning, so when you're trekking around the hot and humid streets of Thailand, there is always a bastion of refreshing coolness nearby.

HistoryThe ubiquitous chain has a long history. John Jefferson Green started 7-eleven in 1927 under the name Southland Ice Company, in Dallas, USA. Originally, as the name suggests, only ice was sold, but eventually the venue began to sell milk, bread, eggs and other commodities that people need on a daily basis. What set it apart from other grocery stores was that it stayed open after they all closed.The franchise came across a little hurdle in 1931 however, during the Great depression. They became bankrupt

but soon bounced back. The repeal of prohibition in 1933 made it so that ice and beer sales surged, giving Southland a huge beneficial boost.By 1945 Southland owned stores were all across north-central Texas, operating seven days a week. Southland stores spread across the country like wildflower and in 1946 the name of the chain was changed to 7-eleven. Why did it change to this name, you're probably not asking. It was because the store originally was open from 7am to 11pm.At the end of the 1950s, Southland began to open more suburban stores. With the advent of computers, 7 eleven was able to pinpoint its strengths and weaknesses through a new computer inventory system. Unsurprisingly, single purchase items were the best sellers. The expansion of 7-eleven didn't stop at the country's border. The uniqueness of 7-elevens appealed to people the world over. Pretty soon they popped up everywhere, stealing business from local Ma & Pa general stores. Some of you may wonder why you'll see a 7 eleven store in Thailand, right next to another one. Some people say that it's because Thais are too lazy to walk far but another reason is that CP, the present licensee, isn't concerned about success. They give out their licenses to anyone who can pay for one. Sometimes they'll even wait and see if a 7 eleven store is successful in a certain area and then they'll open there own, right next to yours. Pretty sneaky. CP owns around half of the 7 elevens in Thailand, the others are all franchised. CP can even kill two birds with one stone by selling their own products in 7 eleven stores, so they really are ahead of the game.So now you know why you can't turn around on the street in Thailand without spotting a 7 eleven. They're absolutely everywhere. Pretty soon there will be one in your own front yard.

ИСТОРИЯ ВОПРОСАНа самом деле, 7-Eleven вовсе не тайское изобретение. Ос-нователем крупнейшей международной сети круглосуточных магазинов стал американец Джо Томпсон, который в 1927 году открыл в Далласе небольшой магазин, торговавший молоком, яйцами и хлебом. Идея понравилась покупателям, ведь теперь они могли сэкономить время и не ходить по разным лавкам, чтобы приобрести все необходимое. Со временем Томпсон запустил еще несколько торговых точек в Далласе.Магазины работали с 7 утра до 11 вечера -по тем временам это было беспрецедентно, и именно первоначальному графику работы сеть 7-Eleven обязана своим названием. По условиям франшизы, 72,3% ассортимента магазина должны составлять продукты и напитки, на промтовары приходится 27,7%.В 7-Eleven можно позавтракать, пообедать и поужинать, оплатить счета за мобильный и стационарный телефоны, электричество и воду, купить сим-карту для сотового и даже приобрести билет на самолет! Еще одно немаловажное в тайских условиях преимущество: здесь постоянно и на полную мощность работают кондиционеры, и если жара вас таки допекла, то всегда можно зайти охладиться в 7-Eleven. А вскоре в магазине станет возможно разсплатиться за покупки пластиковой картой.При этом ценовая политика также стандартна для сети. Инте-ресно, что по уровню цен тайские магазинчики практически не отличаются от больших супермаркетов типа Tesco Lotus. А вот, например, в Сингапуре 7-Eleven удивляет несуразно вы-сокими ценами, более чем на треть превышающими расценки супермаркетов.

ОНИ ПОВСЮДУ!При этом сеть продолжает развиваться бурными темпами. По словам Криенгчая Бунпоапичарта, финансового директора CP, в 2016 году общее количество 7-Eleven в Таиланде должно было быть доведено до 12 тысяч. На очереди открытие мага-зинов в Камбодже, Вьетнаме, Лаосе и Мьянме, где пока в роз-ничной торговле преобладают грязноватые базары и пыльные лавчонки, торгующие просроченным товаром. Все-таки иногда глобализация оказывается чертовски хорошей штукой!

There are about 360,000 people currently living in Phuket, and around 14 million tourists visit the island each year. So for every local there are around 40 tourists idly strolling around.

In the monsoon season, from May to October, Phuket receives 3000 mm of rain. This means that the entire surface of the island would get covered by a three-meter layer of fresh water, if it didn't wash away into the ocean and tropical forests.

There are 32 islands surrounding Phuket, all with incredibly beautiful scenery. There are also islands by the Indian Ocean consisting entirely of granite, an island in the Bay of Phang Nga is even made of limestone. These islands form fantastic shapes that protrude from the sea, the most famous of which is James Bond Island.

A few modifications have been made to the latest Tuscon from Hyundai. The Eco, Sport and Limited models all have a brand new turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, which will replace the old 2.4-liter. Compensating for this, it now has 195 pound-feet of peak torque to give it extra power.

A lot of new cars include sensor devices for parking and driving. The Nissan Altima now has standard blind-spot warnings as well as rear cross traffic alerts and also other types of motion detectors. The look of the car has changed as well, it now has a sportier trim to glam up its appearance.
