EDUCATION

Thesis: Validation and time series analysis of global stratospheric
data sets.
Research supervisor: Prof. D. P. Murtagh
2000-2001 M.Sc. Mathematics in Environmental Science University of East Anglia, Norwich, England
1996-2000 B.Sc. Mathematics University of East Anglia, Norwich, England
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
2015 (Nov.) – Present
Project Assistant Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Working with the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Climate
Change Initiative (CCI) for ozone. The goal of the project is to provide
atmospheric ozone data acquired from remote sensing satellite
instruments to help improve the understanding of global climate
change, supporting goals set out by the United Nations Framework
Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC). Data contributed here is from the Odin
SMR instrument.
2009 (Mar.) – 2015 (Mar.) Post Doctoral Fellow
Department of Physics, University of Toronto.
Part of a team working on the Canadian SCISAT-1 satellite mission,
Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) that examines atmospheric
chemistry and dynamics with a focus on stratospheric ozone depletion
in the Arctic.
ACE-FTS climatology project
Constructed monthly and tri-monthly zonal average climatologies for
the 14 baseline species: O3, H2O, CH4, N2O, CO, NO, NO2, N2O5,
HNO3, HCl, ClONO2, CCl3F, CCl2F2, HF, as well as a NOy
climatology measured by the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer
(ACE-FTS). These data sets are intended to provide a better
understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved in the
upper atmosphere, as well as a tool for atmospheric models. Also
produced similar climatologies for the Stratospheric Processes And
their Role in Climate Data Initiative. This project’s main objective was
a detailed comparison of climatologies of chemical trace gas species,
which identify differences between the different data sets measured by
numerous satellite instruments.
Validation of ACE-FTS data
Intercompared ACE-FTS, Japanese Experiment Module
Superconducting sub-MIllimeter wave Limb-Emission Sounder (JEM-
SMILES), and Odin Sub-Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) ozone
isotopologues in terms of volume mixing ratios as well as enrichment
values. Conducted a validation of ACE-FTS water vapour data by
comparing to coincident LIDAR measurements taken at the Table
Mountain Facility on October 12-26, 2009, during the Measurements of
Humidity in the Atmosphere and Validation Experiments (MOHAVE)
2009 campaign. Such analyses help to establish the reliability of the
data and identify where improvements can be made if necessary.
Data gap bridging study
Investigated the feasibility of using data from either a limb/occultation
or nadir viewing instruments to fill a hypothetical gap in the time series
between the termination of the ACE mission and the initiation of the
proposed CASS mission. This was tested using both ozone and carbon
monoxide measurements.
Forward and inverse modeling
Helped develop a forward model and retrieval code for solar
occultation based geometry as part of the Sasktran modeling package.
Work here involved developing and testing code by comparing
Sasktran output radiances to that of the ACE-FTS forward model.
2003 (Oct.) – 2009 (Jan.)
Doctoral Student Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Investigated and extended ozone and water vapour time series from
1979 - 2008 by amalgamating satellite data sets and using linear
regression to determine trend estimates of decadal stratospheric
ozone depletion and potential recovery.
Carried out validation studies for SMR stratospheric ozone, using
other satellite data sets and balloon sondes measurements to help
improve the quality of the SMR data.
Illustrated assimilation to be an appropriate method for validation
of satellite measurements when very few coincidences are available
between satellite measurements and balloon sondes.
2002 (Jul.) – 2003 (Sep.) Research Assistant Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Assisted with the integration of satellite data into the Dynamical
Isentropic Assimilation Model for OdiN Data (DIAMOND) model
used for investigations of ozone depletion in the winter pole, utilising
Odin SMR and ENVISAT Michelson Interferometer for Passive
Atmospheric Sounding MIPAS data. Gained experience in MATLAB.
