REAL CITIES: A Symposium on Brazilian UrbanismCIDADES REAIS: Um Encontro sobre o Urbanismo no Brazil
Partners of the Americas, Illinois ‐ São Paulo (POA‐IL‐SP), in collaboration with the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago;
Instituto Cervantes; The Southside Community Arts Center; and School of the Art Institute of Chicago; is proud to present
REAL CITIES: A Symposium on Brazilian Urbanism and accompanying exhibitions featuring innovative architecture and urban
design in Brazil.
Real Cities: A Symposium on Brazilian Urbanism is a trans‐cultural design platform for architects, urbanists, artists, designers
and concerned citizens to discuss issues relevant to 21st century cities. Symposium highlights include: lectures by
architect/urban planner, Jaime Lerner; architect/urbanist, Jorge Wilheim; landscape architect Rosa Kliass; Fernanda Barbara
& Una Architects; author/activist Binka la Breton; a platform of professionals from Brazil and Chicago on livable urbanism and
new models for involving inhabitants in the design of cities, and extraordinary live performances by local Chicago artists.
At a time when the world’s eyes are closely attuned to emergent Brazilian innovation, whether economic and technological
strategies, sustainable model cities, or the promise of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, POA‐IL‐SP will convene an
international design forum to contemplate one of the most urgent issues of the 21st century: How to design world cities that
sustain quality of life while accommodating increasing population density.
Partners of the Americas, Illinois ‐ São Paulo
As a part of a historic and continuing effort to bring Brazilian culture to Chicago, this fall a team of POA‐IL‐SP architects and
designers worked together with the Brazilian Consulate and several institutional partners, to create a cross‐cultural platform
of internationally recognized professionals on globally relevant topics.
