fees and costsUnderstanding your uni fees and the HECS system can be a bit of a challenge. The fees you will pay depend on the courses you take.

You’ll receive two bills via email at the start of each semester. The first is for the cost of the courses you’re enrolled in, and the other is for the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

All students can pay their fees upfront. Australian citizens (and holders of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa) can make a part payment/part deferral, or total fee deferral via a HELP loan.

Australian citizens (and holders of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa) may also defer SSAF via an SA-HELP loan. Please note that this is a separate HELP loan and requires a separate application

The census date (31 March in Semester 1 and 31 August Semester 2) is the last date you can drop a course without having to pay for it.

You can pay your fees through myHub, BPAY, or in person at Australia Post.

Tuition FeesThe amount of money you pay depends on a number of factors including the program and courses you choose to study. Australian citizens and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder are eligible to defer their tuition fees through a HELP loan.

You can find full details on tuition fees here or by following the QR code.

SSAFThe Student Services and Amenities Fee pays for non-academic services on campus, such as sporting facilities, food outlets and career services.

The amount you pay varies depending on whether you study on or off campus, and will be sent to you as a bill at the beginning of each semester. Search ‘SSAF’ on the Uni’s website for more information.

Other costs and supportOther costs for your study will include things such as textbooks, and course equipment and resources depending on your program. This may include things such as lab coats or uniforms.

Along with HELP support there are other financial support options for students including scholarships (see page 24), and student loans and hardship grants for cases of genuine need. Students may also be eligible for income assistance through Centrelink. You will have to check your eligibility with Centrelink.

program handbooksProgram handbooks contain all the information you need to know about your degree, such as where it’s taught, admission requirements and the courses you need to study to complete the degree. Program handbooks can be found at newcastle.edu.au/degrees

managing your workload

How many hours will I have to do?Students studying three or four courses per semester are considered full-time students undertaking full-time study.

Students studying one or two courses per semester are considered part-time students undertaking part-time study.

One course equals 10 units, which generally equals 10 hours. This will be a combination of face-to-face (lectures, tutorials, labs, group work, workshops, practicals) and personal study. Full-time study requires 30-50 hours per week for class work, study, reading and assessments.

TimetablesBefore you enrol you should check the timetables for each course and try to coordinate your class times. Timetables can be accessed by selecting the ‘Timetable Search’ icon in the myUON Student Portal. You’ll need to search the course code (available in your program handbook) for each course timetable you’re looking for.

OrientationOrientation is before semester starts and is a great opportunity to become familiar with your University before classes begin. In 2016 Orientation is from Monday, 15 to Wednesday, 17 February.

Each faculty has its orientation on a specific day and you should attend the orientation day relevant to your program. On this day you can meet staff and other students, discover your campus and learn more about being a University of Newcastle student. There will be a number of fun and exciting events that you can take part in each day of Orientation, even if it’s not your Faculty day. You are more than welcome to come to Orientation every day to take part in fun events like Campus Quest and a campus tour.

A typical faculty Orientation Day may include:

Orientation is also a time to meet other students and have lots of fun. The Orientation Expo is on every day in the Brennan Room in the Shortland Building. This is where the University sporting and social clubs, different University support groups and organisations and other awesome services set up stalls for you to check out. The different clubs are a great way to meet new people and there is always a whole heap of free stuff to grab from the stalls.

Faculty welcome Q&A sessionCampus tours Program sessions

There is also lots of free entertainment all across campus including live music, barbecues, roving entertainers and displays from clubs and other fun activities. You can also take part in the Campus Quest – a fun treasure hunt style activity designed to help you know the campus.

Orientation traditionally ends with the O Party at Bar on the Hill at our Callaghan Campus. With both international and Australian bands and DJ acts having played O Party in the past, it's a must-attend and a great way to let your hair down a little before the serious business of classes and study starts.

parking and transport

ParkingIf you intend to drive your car to uni the first thing you will want to get sorted is your parking permit. Avoid the long queues for parking permits during orientation by ordering online and collecting your permit as soon as you have your student card.

Parking at uni can be an enormous challenge if you don’t drive in with a game plan, and can be a stressful way to start your day. During the first few weeks of semester, you should aim to arrive on campus at around 8am. The vast majority of spaces will be filled by 9am.

For more info on transport and parking scan the QR code.

Parking Permits and Tickets (Callaghan Campus & Newcastle City Precinct)

Parking Permit

Full year or single semester parking permits are available for purchase through the university’s online store at the beginning of the year.

To collect your permit, you must present the receipt provided by the website after purchase and your student card to any of the Student Hubs on campus.

Daily Parking Tickets

Parking tickets can be purchased from any of the ticket machines on campus.

You’ll need to have the correct amount when purchasing a ticket, as the machines do not give change, or pay with card.

Page 27: Ready, Set, UON - Callaghan

newcastle.edu.au/current-students | 27

Free ParkingFree on-campus parking at Callaghan can be found at car park 15 and 16 (check the campus map).

Alternatively, you can park outside the campus grounds for free. Free parking spaces fill up very early.

Motorcycle ParkingThere is free parking for motorcycles at all campuses. Motorcycles must park in marked motorcycle parking bays (check the campus map).

Mobility ParkingIf you have an RMS Mobility permit, you can park in the Disabled, Staff and General Car parking spaces.

Students who need closer parking due to a temporary medical condition can apply for the University’s disability access permit.

Parking Signs and FinesUnless you have a special parking permit or RMS Mobility permit, you must always park in the ‘General’ parking areas.

Certain sections and levels of car parks are designated for staff only, and you will receive a hefty fine if you park there.

The same goes for non-existent parking spots. Sure, you may see an empty area of grass or a section of footpath that vaguely resembles a parking spot, but resist the urge to park there. You will receive a fine for parking outside of the designated car park areas.

Take some time before uni starts to drive around campus and know where the best car parks are for you.

Public transportPublic transport is a great way to avoid the hassle of driving and parking, and you can always do some extra reading or relaxing on the bus or train – you’ll be the calm and prepared one when you arrive at class!

You can print and complete this form and take it to a Student Hub for processing, otherwise printed copies are available at the hubs for you to complete while you are there. You need to update this sticker each year.

Students at the University of Newcastle can sign up for cheaper and more convenient travel with Opal. Eligible students will be able to access all the benefits of Opal, including cheaper fares, daily travel caps and weekly travel rewards, providing free travel after eight paid journeys in a week.

getting around campus tourThe University of Newcastle's main campus at Callaghan is only 12 kilometres from beaches and the heart of Newcastle. Our Callaghan campus is a wonderful mix of award-winning, architecturally designed buildings and world-class infrastructure scattered over 140 hectares of natural bushland. We have a reputation for having one of the most naturally beautiful campuses in Australia and we work hard to protect it.

But, a big campus like ours can also be overwhelming when you visit it for the first time. During Orientation we encourage you to take a campus tour. Other students will show you around campus – and they all know what it’s like to be a ‘newbie’ so they will know the best ways to avoid getting lost during those crucial first few weeks at Uni.

You could also try the handy Lost On Campus mobile app for your smart phone, with maps and photos from other students to help you find your way around.

academic supportAcademic Integrity Module

All students must uphold the University's five values of academic integrity while studying at UON: Honesty, Fairness, Trust, Responsibility and Respect.

To help students avoid plagiarism and academic fraud and to uphold academic integrity, all new students must complete an Academic Integrity Module before the end of their first enrolment period (semester, trimester or block). All students will be notified by email advising them when they need to complete this 30 minute online test. Find out more about the Academic Integrity Module here or by scanning the QR Code.

Learning AdvisorsCritical thinking, reading and writing for university can be new and challenging experiences. If you want to develop your study skills, we have a group of dedicated Learning Advisers who can help you learn successfully at university.

The Learning Development Team can guide you at all stages of your study program, to help you learn and write effectively. This may include self-help resources, drop-in clinics, workshops and student consultations.

Our art galleries – the Uni Gallery and Watt Space – have regular exhibitions, and faculties may have their own events and public lectures that you can attend.

Clubs and societies will often open up their events to all students to help grow their membership, so that can be another fun way to experience campus life.

You will also notice things like free BBQs, movies, live music and performances dotted around campus in our bars and communal outdoor spaces.
