3PLOT SYNOPSIS

Act One

A boy, Hansel, and his sister, Gretel, live at the edge of a dark forest with their parents. The family is poor and hungry. One day, while Mother and Father are in the village trying to sell handmade goods, Hansel and Gretel – instead of doing chores - sing and dance with friends. Mother returns home and finds the children playing, not working. She loses her temper and sends them into the woods to gather berries for dinner. Father comes back from a successful day of selling, but his happiness soon turns to fear when Mother tells him where the children are. Father has heard tales of a witch who bakes children into Gingerbread Cookies and eats them! Both parents run off into the woods to search for Hansel and Gretel.

Act Two

The brother and sister are having fun with their friends in the woods. Gretel makes a flower crown and Hansel picks berries, which they hungrily begin to eat. Soon the brother and sister realize the berries are all gone, AND it’s getting dark AND they’re lost! The Sandman and Sandwoman appear and sing a lullaby to the frightened, exhausted children. Hansel and Gretel drowsily settle down and sing their prayers before drifting off to sleep. In the morning, three little Pixies wake the children.

Act Three

Now deep in the forest, Hansel and Gretel come upon a delicious-looking cottage surrounded by a Gingerbread Cookie fence. The cottage is decorated with treats of all sorts, and the hungry children can’t resist taking a nibble. All of a sudden, a two-headed witch appears! She acts friendly but, when Hansel and Gretel try to leave, she casts a spell on them and locks Hansel in a cage. The witch cheerfully makes plans to fatten up both children before she bakes them into cookies, but they are too smart for her - Gretel steals her wand and pushes the witch into her own oven! Then Gretel releases Hansel from his cage and they are magically transported outside. The Gingerbread Cookies begin singing and Hansel waves the wand to break their spell, as well. Mother and Father arrive and everyone celebrates their victory over the evil witch.

Here are some tips that will help you read the script.

• The chunks of student-involvement are divided by these bubbles...

• All CHORUS words are bold, sung CHORUS words (lyrics) are also italicized.

• Watch the VIDEO TUTORIALS and join in the fun!

https://ofty.org/tms

• Don’t forget your custumes: wear raggedy-old play clothes as the RAGAMUFFINS, draw a colorful gingerbread cookie on an upside down paper bag to make GINGERBREAD COOKIE costume, and make a magical wand to use as a PIXIE! (see page 11 for costume inpiration!)

11BUILD YOUR OWN COSTUMES!

Costumes are an important part of playing a character in opera and theater. They make it easy for the audience to see who you are playing, and they help the actor - you! - feel like that character. In this activity, you will build your own costume for the three roles that you can play in Hansel & Gretel: a Ragamuffin, a Pixie, and a Gingerbread Cookie.

Video Tutorials : Build Your Own Costume!

1.) RAGAMUFFINS:

Mismatch: Pick out a top and bottom with different patterns or colors that clash.

Raggedy Clothes: With a adult’s permission, pick a worn out piece of clothing and cut holes in a few spots (unless they already have some!)

Stains: With an adult’s permission, pick an old piece of clothing and add some stains! Using a fabric marker, color circles and odd shapes on the clothes.

Patches: Cut out square pieces of fabric or cardboard and tape them onto your clothes.

2.) PIXIES:

Take a few pieces of yarn and tape them against the end of your wand.

Wrap the entire length of your wand with yarn, ribbon, stickers, or colorful tape.

For more magic, use a glue gun to attach small gems, beads or rocks to the stick of your wand.

3.) GINGERBREAD COOKIES:

Turn your brown paper bag upside down and cut a head-sized circle from the bottom of the bag. Cut holes for each of your arms, or cut the entire side of the bag open to make a tabard.

Decorate your cookie! Use colorful markers, crayons or paint. You can even attach decorations to the cardboard using glue - we recommend buttons!

1. YOU WILL NEED:

- mismatched or old clothes- scissors

- cardboard or fabric scraps- markers (fabric-type preferred)

YOU WILL NEED:

- wand - long pencil, wooden rod, or stick from outside (be creative!)

- ribbon, yarn, or stickersoptional:

- small rocks, gems, or beads- glue gun

YOU WILL NEED:
