This is the story of Hansel and Gretel . They livewith their stepmother and father. They haven 'tgot a lot of money. Their father is awoodcutter . Their stepmother is not a goodwoman . She shouts at the children every day .

One night , the children are in bed .

'We haven 't got any money, ' Father says .

'We haven 't got any food ,' the bad stepmother says . 'We must leave Hansel and Gretel inthe forest .'

'No , we can 't do that! ' says Father .

'We must ,' says the bad stepmother .

'OK. But it isn 't right ,' says Father .

But Hansel and Gretel aren 't sleeping and theyhear their father and stepmother .

'What can we do? ' asks Gretel .

'We will be OK ,' says Hansel . 'I've got an idea .'

But Hanse l isn 't afraid . He isn't sad . He 'sdropping stones . They can f ollow the stonesand go home .

In the middle of the forest , the bad step mother says , 'Let 's make a fire . Father and I will ge tso me wood . Wait here .'

Father and the bad stepmother leave . Han seland Gretel si t under a tree and wait. They w aitand wait , but Father and the bad stepmothe r don 't come ba ck.

'Don 't be s ad , Gretel ,' says Han s el. 'Let 's lo okfor the s tones . We can follow the stones an d

go home .'

Hansel and Gretel walk all night and all day .But they can 't find the stones . They are lost .They are ve ry hungry and very tired. They go to

sleep under a tree . When they wake up , theysee a little bird . It's singing a beautiful song .Hansel and Gre te l follow the little b ird .

The bird takes them to a little house . It is a

house of cake and sweets .

'Let 's eat! ' say Hansel and Gretel.

'I'll eat some cake! ' says Gretel.

'I'll eat s ome sweets! ' says Hansel.

'Yum my !' say Hansel and Gretel.

'Who is eating my house? ' someone asks .

'Hello , little children! ' she says . ' Are youhu ngry? Come into my house .'

Hansel a nd Gretel go into her house . The oldwoman gi ve s them some milk and biscuits .

They eat a lo t and they go to sleep .

But the ol d woman is a bad woman . She is awitch ! She wants to eat Hansel and Gretel!

In the morning , the witch wakes up . Thechildren are sleeping . The witch takes Hanse land puts him in a cage .

'Help! Help! ' he shouts .

'What are you do ing? ' Gretel a s ks the witch .

The witch s ays , 'Be quiet ! Go and g et som emilk and biscuits for your b roth e r . He must be

fat . I'm go ing to eat him .'. 'Oh no!' says Gretel .

Every day Gretel gives Hansel food but hedoesn 't eat a lot. He doesn 't want the witch

to eat him .

But the witch wants to eat Hansel. Every dayshe says , 'Show me your finger .' She wants tosee if his finger is fat. But Hansel gives her anold bone t o feel .

One day, the witch is angry. 'You will never be fat, Hansel,' she shouts. 'I'm going to eatyou tomorrow.'

Gretel is in bed. She hears the witch andgets up. 'Oh no!' she says . 'Please don't e a tmy brother!'

'Be quiet!' says the witch. 'Get me somepepper . I will make Boy Soup. I like a lot of pepper in Boy Soup.'

Gretel gets the pepper because she is afraid.

But Gretel wants to help her brother . She 'sgot an idea! She blows a lot of pepper atthe witch . Now the witch can 't see .

'Help! Where am I? ' she shouts .

Grete l pushes the witch into the fire .' Ahh! ' shouts the witch .

Gretel run s to Hansel 's cage .

Gretel opens the door of the cage and Han selcomes out . They are very happy .

Let 's take the bad witch 's gold ,' says Hansel .

'That 's a good idea ,' says Gretel .

They take the gold and leave the house . Theysee some bir ds . They sing :

'Little birds , little birds ,We 're lost an d alone .Little birds , little birds ,Ta ke us home .'

The birds take them home . Father is veryhappy when he sees his two childre n.

'You are home! ' he says . 'I'm very hap py!'The bad stepmother does not live th ere now .Hansel and Gretel give Father the go ld. Nowthey will never be hungry .
