Message from our Pastor

Todays Readings First Reading — Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). Gospel — Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to another will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42).

Christian Hospitality Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is car-ried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Welcome

Dear Parish Family, Jesus gives us the call of radical discipleship in this weekend’s Gospel. It is not enough to just say, “Sure, I believe in God.” We have to actively live our lives knowing and trusting in his plan for us and our salvation. Our Lord tells us that there is nothing in this world we should love more than him. He should be first and foremost in our lives. This would

solve a lot of our world’s problems if we allowed this teaching to settle in our hearts. Human beings love a lot more things than God and that can cause us problems. We see it in violence, discrimination, hatred, bitter-ness, anger, even with all the problems that surround the pandemic. We think about ourselves and what we value more than the love of God. If we truly put him first and loved him above everything else, then our world would be a better place. Heaven is a place where all the sorrows and pains of this world will no longer exists, because everyone is Heaven is doing the will of God. We pray that our world may be more like Heaven as more people may follow the example of discipleship set by Christ. May His love fill our hearts and help us to live more like him. Fr. T.J.

Wishing all of you a blessed and safe

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of June 27/28, 2020

In today’s gospel reading the Twelve hear Jesus speak these words: “whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” This is the first time Matthew mentions the word “cross” in his gos-pel, and it is not in direct reference to Jesus’ crucifixion but as a prerequi-site to following him. Good stewards recognize that the call to discipleship requires them to “take up the cross” and align their goals in life and their fate with that of Jesus, that is, with suffering, opposition, resistance and even death. Reflect this week on the crosses you need to take up daily in order to comprehend the way of Jesus Christ.

“Extend mercy toward others, so there can be no one

whom you meet without helping…” – St. Vincent de Paul

In 1833, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam founded the Society of St. Vincent de Paul along with six friends. To fund the activities to help the poor, they took a secret collection using a black bag. They passed it from person to person until each one had given their share. Because the Society does not receive DSF funding, Bishop Markovsky allowed us to have our first Black Bag collection in 1970; 50 years later, we continue the tradition of the Black Bag Collection. We ask that you to join and donate to our An-nual Black Bag Collection July 11-12, 2020.

Page 4: Readings for the Week Welcome · Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as

Pope Benedict XVI said, “The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness.” “Comfort” puts me first. “Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why settle for com-fort when you can achieve great-ness! Pick up your cross, ask Je-sus for guidance on using your gifts and live the life God in-tended for you! Thank you to all who made #SharingisCaringDay a big suc-cess with gifts and pledges total-ing $290,367 which brings our total to $4,808,318. We are get-ting closer and closer to our goal of being debt free and honoring our commitment to the Archdio-cese. If you did not get a chance to give during #SharingisCaringDay you can

still do so! To make a commitment, fill out the card below and drop it in the col-lection basket or mail to: St. Martha

Catholic Church, 4301 Woodridge Parkway, Porter, TX 77365 or fill out the online commitment card at:

https://www.stmartha.com/commitment-card.

A gift, in any amount, will bring us closer to our goal and allow us to fulfill our mission. We are blessed to be part of a beautiful faith communi-ty and are called to continue building God’s kingdom at St. Martha. To realize this vision, we truly need your help. Together, we will con-tinue to build a stronger church financially and lay a

solid foundation for the future.

13th Sunday of Ordinary Time “…whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:38)

Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of Mary.

The Second Vatican Council re-minded us that Mary’s role in salva-tion history did not end with her Assumption into Heaven. She con-tinually intercedes for all of us, her children, as we journey through life. Let us offer this decade asking Mary’s intercession. Through her prayers may the Church be granted an abundance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Ministry Handbook Advertising Opportunity

We are in the process of updating our annual Ministry Handbook for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please email Jodi at [email protected]. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Ministry Handbook advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to ad-vertise in our new Ministry Hand-book.
