Now that we have the holidays behind us, some of us are looking for ways to pay for the cost of that “extra” cheer we shared with our loved ones! Watch out for this scam, though - the advertisement tells us they’re searching for “Mystery Shoppers.” It is a seasonal employment scam where one individual reported losing $2,000! If the ad requires advance payment to gain access to information on how to become a mystery shopper, avoid it! Beshear says, “Legitimate companies do not require you to make an advance payment to obtain employment as a mystery shopper. Kentuckians must always remain vigilant about scams, especially job scams during the Christmas season when con artists are looking to take advantage of hard working Kentuckians.”

Beshear recommends you research and verify all job postings and watch out for the following red flags:

• If you’re asked to wire money, don’t. If the first task is to use your personal bank account to cash a check, withdraw cash and complete a wire transfer, it is likely as scam.

• If it sounds too good to be true … it just is. Watch out for jobs that promise a high salary to work from home which also require little experience. It is always a good idea to watch out for job offers without completing an in-person or telephone interview.

• If you are immediately asked to provide personal or financial information for example, a social security number, or other financial information, it is likely a scam. Take extra time to verify a company and the application before you provide any sensitive data.

Remember – scammers are tricky, but together with Attorney General’s alert system, we can stay informed and stop them in their tracks! One of Beshear’s top priorities is to protect Kentucky families, especially senior citizens, from scams, abuse and exploitation. To sign up to receive Scam Alerts text the words KYOAG Scam to GOV311 (468311), or enroll online at ag.ky.gov/scams and select text message or email alert. To report a scam contact the Office of Attorney General at 888-432-9257 and file a complaint online.
