What will we be doing?

Learning to read

0 ‘Look and say’ Working with the words over and over again until children just ‘know them’.

0Phonics Using the sounds of the alphabet to ‘sound out’ words.

0 Children learn in different ways and at different rates but it is important that they have exposure to lots of books and reading so their reading skills can develop.

Phonics0 How you can help your child…

Say the sounds correctly, don’t add any ‘errrrrrs’ on the end of sounds as this will confuse children when they start to put sounds together.

We teach ‘Jolly Phonics’, resources are available online or from Early Learning Centre.

Difficulties when reading0 Making a mistake- ‘let’s go back and have another look

at that’ Give them a choice, does that say ‘was’ or ‘saw’.0 Getting stuck- sound it out, given them some thinking

time but don’t be afraid to tell them the word!0 Children can sound out but still can’t read the word-

keep going, be patient!0 Reluctant readers- find a quiet time, find what they

love to read, Argos catalogue, books about tractors, reward them! Talk them all the time about how important reading is.
