FEATURED STUDY DESTINATION:

Scotland

It’s not all kilts, whisky and golf, as Scotland has so much more to

offer. With a strong and proud history of education, a thriving arts

and culture scene, stunning landscapes and state of the art

sporting facilities. There really is something for everyone.

Scotland is part of the UK and so easily accessible from London –

whether you travel up by train, less than 4 hours from London to

the Capital or by plane, less than 55 minutes from any of the

airports around London, we have plenty more to offer.

Scotland’s people are famous for the warmth of their welcome.

Home to just over five million people, it is estimated that for every

person living in Scotland, another five people living across the

world have a Scottish connection. With such close and extensive

connections to every corner of the world, it is no wonder that

overseas visitors to Scotland are made to feel like they are

returning home!

English is the main language and we have ‘accents’ just as

anywhere else in the UK but it is a total myth that our ‘accents’ are

far harder to understand than anywhere else such as London,

Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool – it is actually far

easier to understand than most places in other parts of the UK!

Throughout history, Scots have made their impact felt on the

world including the fields of medicine, engineering and science,

politics, history, the arts and sport.

With a rich and historic culture and heritage of wonderful

contrasts it has seven cosmopolitan and dynamic cities with their

own distinct personalities. The capital Edinburgh, Glasgow,

Dundee, Stirling, Aberdeen, Inverness and Perth. The most densely

populated area of Scotland is known as the ‘central belt’ which runs west

to east and includes the urban areas of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Scotland has a wealth of ancient monuments, castles and museums

reflecting our long and rich history and plays host to a dynamic annual

calendar of internationally acclaimed musical and cultural festivals

including the International Film, Fringe and Arts Festivals and the

Military Tattoo. There are myriad of theatres, museums, art galleries,

cinemas and parks showcasing the traditional and current culture of

Scotland.

Scotland has something for everyone in terms of leisure and outdoor

activities with so much to experience, from beautiful natural landscape to

city dwellers who don’t need to travel far to walk in the Scottish hills or

along its lochs and beaches.

WHY AN EDUCATION IN SCOTLAND?Traditionally, Scottish education provides both broad and depth to give

students a solid foundation before they specialised at the final stages of

their school career and the education systems of a number of other

countries have been modeled on ours. Scotland is respected worldwide

for its education, including its premier league boarding schools and

universities.

All of Scotland’s boarding schools have alumni who have forged

successful careers across the board, from traditional professions such as

doctors and lawyers to self-made entrepreneurs. A disproportionately

high number of former pupils from Scotland’s independent schools are in

the public eye – from high-profile journalists and politicians to Olympic

sportsmen and women. However, boarding schools in Scotland admit

students of all abilities and seek to enable each individual student to reach

their own potential, whatever their abilities.

Students are welcomed into a positive, nurturing environment where

t’s another new term, the last of the

This edition of R.E.A.D is packed with

different advertorials as well as juicy

information for your digestion. Have you

He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true.

But teach him also that; for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every selfish Politician, there is a dedicated leader;

Teach him for every enemy there is a friend, Steer him away from envy,if you can,

Teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Let him learn early that the bullies are the easiest to lick…

Teach him, if you can, the wonder of books…But also give him quiet timeto ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school, teach him it is far honourable to fail than to cheat…

Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong…

Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough with the tough. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the band wagon…

Teach him to listen to all men…but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through.

Teach him if you can, how to laugh when he is sad…

Teach him there is no shame in tears,

Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness…

Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the highest bidders but never to put a price-tag on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right.

Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to be impatient…let him have the patience to be brave.

Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will have sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order, but see what you can do…He is such a fine little fellow,my son!

they feel safe and secure, where personal growth is

fostered and where they are inspired to give of

themselves and to achieve their potential. While exam

results are consistently good, the emphasis in boarding

schools is on all-round education and the development

of the whole person, so that students leave school as

confident young people, equipped to make their way in

the world.

Other common features of today’s boarding schools are

an outward-looking international focus, a strong sense

of community and belonging, clearly-defined values

and expectations of behavior, and the fostering of

responsible citizenship and respect for others.

Senior schools usually admit students from the age of 11

to 18 years. As the name suggests, ‘all through’ schools,

more common in Scotland than England, provide a

seamless education from Junior to Senior school. An

added benefit is that Junior School children are taught

some classes by Senior School subject specialists.

Scotland’s Boarding Schools welcome students from all

over the world. Most students who choose Scotland

want to be educated in an English-speaking European

country with good transport links and they are attracted

by Scotland’s safe and friendly reputation, its micro

climate and a far greater quality of life on offer. Scotland

boasts a stunning landscape, a rich cultural heritage and

modern vibrant cities.

International students are attracted to Scotland from

countries all around the world because of our safe,

spacious and idyllic surroundings – all within easy

reach of major cities, airports, the sea and the hills.

Offering a purposeful learning environment, high

quality teaching, consistently good exam results, lots of

opportunities to learn outside the classroom and

excellent pastoral care.

Students have a choice three different curriculum and

qualifications – English, Scottish or International

Educators in most countries are slowly coming to the conclusion that

there should be separate schools for boys and girls at Secondary

School level and the reasons have been clearly stated below; a. Children seem to thrive in single-sex schoolsb. Characteristics of boys are different from girls:• Typical boys are greater risk takers • Girls are more nurturing• Boys like action; they do not talk about their feelings. They engage in more aggressive activities. Their play is classified as “rough and tumble”.• Girls want to play too but they are not as rough as boys. They want to exchange confidences with their best friends.• Girls mature faster than boys.• Girls consistently out-perform boys in reading and writing. The writing skills of 17 years old boys are comparable to that of 14 year old girls.• Girls get better grades at all stages of education.• Girls do homework more consistently than boys. Generally girls win most academic prizes.• When girls are in front of boys, they become timid, self-conscious or afraid. They do not assert themselves and can underestimate their abilitiesc. Some secondary schools are having problems because the boys and girls are distracted with each other.d. Single-sex schools make it easier for the teachers to tailor their

Baccalaureate – although all lead to internationally

recognised qualifications and equip students for

university entrance and life beyond school. All of

Scotland’s boarding schools provide a purposeful

learning environment, high-quality teaching and a focus

on helping individual students to reach their potential.

Most boarding schools in Scotland offer the English

curriculum – AS and A levels. Some follow the Scottish

curriculum – Higher and Advanced Higher. Others offer

the International Baccalaureate.

Integral to school life, extra-curricular activities (we

prefer the term ‘co-curricular’) are equally as important

as academic learning as they enable students to truly

flourish and discover what they are made of! There are

lots of opportunities to learn outside the classroom that

provide personal challenge, teamwork and the discovery

of new skills, so students are encouraged to participate

and to give of their best.

The universities are internationally renowned for their

research, discoveries and innovations including keyhole

surgery and the MRI scanner. Today, they lead the way

with world-class research and development in the life

sciences. Close partnerships between academia and

business have helped new industry sectors to emerge

and thrive, including renewable energies, medical and

digital technologies and the creative industries.

The question is ‘Why wouldn’t you come to Scotland?’

teaching style to the needs of each student.e. Results of Research done in many countries:• Boys as well as girls from single-sex schools scored on the average 15 to 22 percent higher than boys and girls in coed settings.• Boys and girls in single-sex schools were better behaved. f. In coed schools, experience has shown that it is good to segregate girls from boys in Maths and Science, where girls are traditionally weak. g. Girls underestimate their abilities even when they do very well. Girls need constant encouragement while boys overestimate themselves even if they do badly. They need reality checks.

In all, the decision should be based on the personality, abilities and

preference of the child in question. Best wishes in your decision

making Parents!

ENTERTAINMENT “Education is not for me,

I scored 17 in JAMB” - Timaya

opular dance hall crooner, Enitemi

PAlfred Odom better known as Timaya is surely living up his self acclaimed status

as the Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa. Despite not making waves academically, Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa is certainly an inspiration to thousands of youths across the country with his endless string of hit songs and his ‘grass to grace’ story. After given an eccentric performance in the Star Music Trek held in Uyo on April 12th 2014, The very influential hit maker went on to give some words of counsel to the parked crowd. He said, “Education is not for me,” the hit artiste confessed, “It is important, yes, but not for me”. He went on to add, “I scored 17 in JAMB, That’s when I gave up. I don’t have the brain for education but for those of you who do, please do it, it is good.” he concluded.

My Opinion? EDUCATION IS SUPER-GOOD!

(What do you think?)

Thanks!
