FRIEDA’SA DHARMA TAROT SPREAD

At this present moment, what do I need to understand / know / reflect upon regarding (each of the following 4, 8, or 16 positions)?

CARD 4: Power of self-reliance

Each of these Ps correspond to a suit of the minor arcana: Principle - wands; process - cups; practice - pentacles; power - swords.

The next four cards, if the querent wishes to go deeper, represent Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths, redefined by Stephen Batchelor (secular buddhist and a well published Buddhist scholar) as the Four Tasks, and using the acronym ELSA.

CARD 5: Embrace suffering

CARD 6: Let go of craving

CARD 7: Stop craving

CARD 8: Act, the creation and cultivation of a way of life

The next eight cards, if the querent wishes to explore Buddha’s Eightfold Path to creating and cultivating a way of life based on dharma, are in three groupings: Wisdom (discernment) - cards nine and 10 - are right view and right intention; ethical conduct - cards 11, 12, and 13 - are right speech, right action, right livelihood; concentration - cards 14, 15 and 16 - are right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

MARCELLA DELACHAISETIP THE SCALE SPREAD

Which way do I go?

I need to weigh my options.

The Tip the Scale spread is designed to help provide the querent with knowledge and understanding when comparing a dual scenario question.

This spread is meant to reveal additional layers of information when the question is formulated from an either/or basis, yes/no, thts/that, etc.

Define the Option

First, mentally divide the spread space into two sides. For example, imagine the querent takes the path heading East or heading West, or chooses Option A or B, Door#1 or Door#2, or picks the left hand or right hand.

THERE ARE 4 STEPS TO THIS SPREAD.

1. Divide the spread space and define the Querent’s options.

2.Draw the Observation cards (1-2)(3-4) and interpret the pairs.

3.Draw the Actions cards (5-6)(7-8) and interpret the recommendations.

4. Reveal the final cards of Influence (9)(10) and apply the message to all the other cards.

This spread is great when someone has been struggling with a decision. They are doing spread after spread and not hearing you. Moving forward for them is difficult so you need to bring out the Major Arcana cards (the big guns so to speak).

This is simple spread for when all else fails or you’ve been trying to decide whether you could do just one more spread to get closure or clarity. Keeping the spread simple and to the point to gain maximum impact is important. It can empower them by clarifying their thoughts and emotions by bringing those two aspects of self together.

This spread can also be used as a self -development reading to assist yourself or your client to make a decision.

Outcome

The coherence is the synchronization of our emotional and mental aspects creating an optimal, high-energy state that can foster positive outcomes.

You will need to separate your deck into:

Major Arcana

Minor Arcana and Court cards

CAROLE MCCLEERY’S LEMNISCATE TAROT SPREAD

I have been feeling disconnected from my spirit, (higher self, inner voice) for a lot of years now. I used to be quite spiritual but it seems to have got lost along the way, but now I want that feeling of connection back.

I have come up with a spread I feel will help me get back in touch with the inner me and maybe someone else will find it helpful also. I call it the Lemniscate spread because of the infinite nature of our spirits and the lemniscate on the Magician card who connects heaven and earth with his arms.

I put the High Priestess in the center like a significator. This is just to focus on. The cards on the left of the High Priestess are about losing the connection to spirit and the cards on the right are how to regain it.

JULIA BONISTEEL’S THE INTERNAL WORKINGS OF

THE SEVEN DIRECTIONS

This spread reflects the path one would take in a wiccan ritual. This is an abbreviated explanation of course! The circle is first cast beginning in the East (where all things originate), and after the Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East are honored, the South is honored, the West, and finally the North.

Each direction is associated with an element. East/Air, South/Fire, West/Water, and North/Earth. I have added to the “casting of the circle” Above and Below and Within which draws the focus more fully into you at the centre of this circle.

Card 1: East/Air asks: What is Inspiring or Moving You?

Card 2: South/Fire asks: What ignites you? Burns you? or is in transformation?

Card 3: West/Water: What is cleansing you, refreshing you, healing you?

Card 4: North/Earth: What grounds you, brings you security, roots you?

Card 5: Above: What are the desires of the higher self- the Spiritual Realm

Card 6: Below: What are the desires, perhaps even the hidden desires of the deep subconscious mind

Card 7: Within: The Soul’s Desire to be or to attain

8. LESSON card What is the lesson I will learn by following this path?

The challenge cards pair with the action cards as follows: 2/5, 3/6 and 4/7. Look at the connection between cards 1 and 8. How is the lesson related to the soul path? Do they connect/compliment or oppose/contrast?

WHAT THE CARDS REPRESENT

Here is an outline of the layout and positions of the Celtic Cross, and also a deeper look into understanding the relationships between these positions to gain a more holistic view of the Celtic Cross.

The Present

This card represents what is happening to the querent at the present time. It also reflects the querent’s state of mind and how they may be perceiving the situation.

The Challenge

This card represents the immediate challenge or problem facing the querent. This is the one thing that, if resolved, would make life a lot easier. Even if you draw a ‘positive’ card in this position, consider it carefully as it will still represent a challenge.

The Past

This card represents the events that have lead up to the present situation and may provide some indication of how the challenge came about.

The Future

This card represents what is likely to occur within the next few weeks or even months. This is not the final outcome, simply the next step on the journey.

[MODULE 3 | UNIT 5] NAILING THE CELTIC CROSS

45

Page 47: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Copyright © Biddy TarotCopyright © Biddy Tarot

Above

This card reflects the querent’s goal, aspiration or best outcome with regards to the situation. It is what the querent is working towards consciously as they attempt to resolve the issue.

Below

This card reflects that which is within the subconscious realm of the querent and delves much deeper into the core foundation of the situation. It symbolizes the underlying feelings and trends associated with the situation and can

indicate what is truly driving the querent. This card may bring a surprise message to the querent, particularly if they are not deeply connected to their inner being (watch out for reversed cards here which are likely to indicate that this is an ‘unknown’ to the querent).

Advice

The advice card takes into account all that is happening within the querent’s life and presents a recommendation for what approach can be taken to address the current challenges.

External Influences

This card highlights the people, energies or events which will affect the outcome of the question and are beyond the querent’s control.

[MODULE 3 | UNIT 5] NAILING THE CELTIC CROSS

46

Page 48: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Hopes and/or fears

This is perhaps one of the most difficult positions to interpret. Keep in mind that hopes and fears are closely intertwined, therefore that which we hope for may also be that which we fear, and so may fail to happen. Sometimes it is useful to draw

a second card for clarification after the reading has been laid and to read the two together.

Outcome

This card is representative of where the situation is headed and if/how the issue will be resolved. It assumes the outcome based on the querent continuing their current course of action. Of course, if the outcome card is not a desirable

outcome, it is within the free will of the querent to make the necessary changes to their situation.

NOTE There are many different versions of the Celtic Cross, including differences in the order of the cards. Choose what works best for you. If you want to learn more about the positions of the Celtic Cross, I highly recommend Joan Bunning’s Celtic Cross overview.

UNDERSTANDING THE INTER-RELATIONSHIPS OF

THE CELTIC CROSSFirst, let’s imagine the Celtic Cross split into two main sections – the Circle/Cross section on the left (Cards 1 to 6) and the Staff section on the right (Cards 7 to 10).

Circle/Cross

The Circle/Cross shows what is going on in the querent’s life at the time of the reading. This section is made up of two crosses - a central one (Cards 1 and 2) nested within a larger cross (Cards 3 to 6). The smaller cross represents the heart of the matter - what is most central to the querent at the time of the reading. The larger cross consists of two lines that overlay the smaller cross. The horizontal line (Cards 1, 3 and 4)) shows

time moving from the past on the left into the future on the right. The vertical line (Cards 1, 5 and 6) is the querent’s consciousness moving from unconscious on the bottom to conscious mind on the top. Together these six cards give a snapshot of the inner and outer environment at the time of a reading.

Staff

The Staff section shows the relationship between the querent and the environment in which they operate, and can provide a better indication of what is happening in the broader context.

[MODULE 3 | UNIT 5] NAILING THE CELTIC CROSS

48

Page 50: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Copyright © Biddy TarotCopyright © Biddy Tarot

Second, start to look at the various combinations of cards to build a ‘story’:

Compare the Above and Below cards (5 & 6)

Is there a synergy between the conscious and the subconscious levels? Is there alignment between what is driving the querent and what the querent aspires to? If there is alignment, great – it will be a lot be a lot easier to resolve the issue. If not, then assist the querent in understanding what is happening at the

subconscious level and how this may be impacting their response to the issue.

Compare the Above and Outcome cards (5 & 10)

Again, is there alignment between what the querent wants to happen and what will happen? Is the querent helping or hindering the situation? If you find that Cards 5 and 10 are opposing, then the querent will need to think carefully about how to create the outcomes they want. Look to the Advice card (Card 7)

for more guidance.

Compare the Future and Outcomes cards (4 & 10)

How are the events of the near future contributing or influencing the overall outcome? Will the querent need to manage these events in a particular way to create the right outcomes? Again, refer to the Advice card (Card 7) for more detail.

[MODULE 3 | UNIT 5] NAILING THE CELTIC CROSS

49

Page 51: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Copyright © Biddy TarotCopyright © Biddy Tarot

Compare the Below and Hopes/Fears cards (6 & 9)

If you are finding it difficult to interpret the Hopes/Fears, have a look at what is happening at the subconscious level within the querent (Card 6). Is there something in their subconscious realm that is creating fear or hope? If you see reversed cards in these positions, then it is likely the querent is not yet

aware of their subconscious drivers and how this is impacting them in the ‘real world’.

Compare the Advice and Outcome cards (7 & 10)

The querent doesn’t like the outcome? Well, take a look at the Advice card to see what actions the querent can take to create a more positive outcome. Also take into consideration what events are likely to occur in the near future (Card 4) so that the querent can manage these effectively.

Look out for where any Major Arcana cards fall. Majors typically identify life lessons and in a spread like this, they will be particularly powerful in their message. If the Major is reversed, remember that you are missing something and you’re not getting the full potential of your life lesson. Remove the blockage and pay attention to what it is you need to understand to move forward.

Also look out for any patterns across the Tarot reading. Is there a prevalence of Cups cards or Twos? What does this tell you about the patterns in your own life? What groups of cards are missing? Are there any Swords? What does this tell you?

Record your Tarot reading in your Tarot journal. You will no doubt come back to this reading time and time again as a way of checking in with yourself. It might be a Tarot reading that you do on an annual basis or when you are in need of some spiritual direction and insight.

To end the reading, close your eyes and give thanks to your inner self and the Universe for offering you guidance through this very deep, spiritual reading.

AS A MAJOR ARCANA ONLY READING

If you want this to be a super powerful and insightful reading, you might want to take out all of the Major Arcana cards from your deck and only use these cards for the reading.

Simply shuffle and select the cards from the 22 Majors, just as you would if you had a full deck.

You’ll find that you are drawn now to the powerful life lessons that are unfolding in your life now and in the future.

Try the Spiritual Compass Tarot reading and take note of the deep insights that are revealed to you.

This Tarot spread was inspired by a meditation from the book "Awakening the Buddhist Heart" by Lama Surya Das. I am totally in love with his books and am always inspired to think differently about my life after reading them.

In this meditation, we are asked to reflect deeply on our lives and, in the process, to seek out our direction. This is a very powerful meditation and is perfect for when you need direction in your life. It is also in preparation for leading a more mindful life, by being aware of where you are now and where you want to be.

As I read through the meditation, I got such a buzz, knowing that this would make an incredibly powerful Tarot reading. So, I have turned it into a Tarot spread – “The Spiritual Compass”.

THE RELEASE AND LET GO TAROT SPREAD

The main idea with the Release and Let Go Tarot spread is to first shine a light on the negative feelings that exist now. By doing this, we give it a name and we bring it up big. We then focus on how we can release and let go, rising above the situation, and eventually what good will come out of it and what new beginnings can be created to bring positivity back into our lives again.

This is one of those rare Tarot spreads that I recommend doing while you are feeling very emotional and the feelings are still very ‘raw’. It will help you to bring peace to your present state of being and take you out of that panicked state.

Here is the seven-card Tarot spread:

CARD 1: What am I feeling right now

CARD 2: Why am I feeling it so strong

CARD 3: How can I release this feeling

CARD 4: What is the feeling transforming into

CARD 5: How can I rise above

CARD 6: What is my new beginning

CARD 7: What have I learned

MY PERSONAL RELEASE AND LET GO READING

As I am currently feeling a lot of those strong emotions right now, what better time to use the Release and Let Go Tarot spread.

Now, just a moment as I get myself comfortable in the therapist’s chaise lounge and expose my inner mind… *smile*

Here are the cards I drew:

What am I feeling right nowEight of Pentacles reversed

Why am I feeling it so strongTower reversed

How can I release this feelingSeven of Pentacles reversed

What is the feeling transforming intoNine of Cups

How can I rise aboveKnight of Wands reversed

What is my new beginningFool reversed

What have I learnedTen of Swords reversed

Notice all of those reversed Tarot cards?! Perhaps the timing just isn’t right or perhaps this is a sign that the emotions are still very raw. That said, the Release and Let Go spread is intended for that moment in time when you do really feel it and you do need something to give you answers while you work on releasing and letting go. I also see it as a sign that now is a good time to bring my attention inwards and to focus on what I can learn from this situation at hand.

[MODULE 5 | UNIT 5]THE RELEASE AND LET GO TAROT SPREAD

68

Page 70: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Copyright © Biddy TarotCopyright © Biddy Tarot

The Eight of Pentacles reversed shows that I have been working very hard on something but I have suddenly come to a point where it is clear I have been working on the wrong thing! I have been investing energy into something that is now counter-productive. I’m also quite a perfectionist, so when something stops me in my tracks, as it has done, I feel quite confronted that I haven’t been getting it right first time. So I see the feeling has a lot to do with my approach to my work and my profession.

The Tower reversed. Well! I’m not going to let it topple me over, but it’s pretty close to just collapsing everything! If the Tower card was upright, then perhaps I would be seeing it as an ‘end of the world’ type of situation, but I see the reversal as an indication that I can still retain some perspective on the situation. I can see that this is an impactful situation, but I am going to keep grounded as much as possible.

With both the reversed Seven and Eight of Pentacles, there is clearly some sadness here around investing in something and working very hard, but not seeing the intended result. The way to release and let go of this situation is to re-assess where I am investing my energy and making sure that it is where I will see the best results. It’s hard, because I thought I was doing the right thing, so I’m sad to see that it has potentially lead to nothing. But perhaps it’s just time to accept this and move on. I can return to the Six of Pentacles and continue to give as much as possible to the community and this will be what brings satisfaction and reward.

The Nine of Cups is a very positive and uplifting sign that all’s well that ends well. Out of a tough situation, I have the power to come away feeling good about what I do have, rather than what I don’t have. I know there is a positive side to my current situation and that has to do with all the support I have received along the way. If I focus on this, the rest will just fade away and will be replaced by feelings of gratitude and contentment.

The reversed Knight of Wands advises me not to act impulsively now. I’m at risk of doing something off the cuff and just because I’ve had a flash of

[MODULE 5 | UNIT 5]THE RELEASE AND LET GO TAROT SPREAD

69

Page 71: READ TAROT WITH CONFIDENCE

Copyright © Biddy TarotCopyright © Biddy Tarot

an idea and I’m straight into action. This is a good reminderto pause and think before I act. (I definitely need to listen to my own advice!)

Oh wow, the reversed Fool for new beginnings. It’s as if the timing for a new beginning is not now, but a little later. Perhaps I should wait and not act, following the advice of the reversed Knight of Wands. The new beginning will come to me when the timing is better.

And finally, what have I learned? No matter how many times I get knocked down, I will always rise up and keep persevering. Yes it hurts and yes I feel gutted each time I go through a major setback, but I won’t let it stand in my way. There will be more positive change on its way which will help to kick-start a new cycle.

You know what? I do actually feel better after having done this reading and having had explored my emotions, moving from the negative emotion itself to the point of release and the new start that comes out of it.

OVER TO YOU

Use the Release and Let Go spread yourself when you need some perspective on an emotional situation. Take notes of your insights in your Tarot journal.
